Charles Oman is one of the greatest military historians. His books are old, but his writing is both scholarly and acessible. He describes tactics, campaigns, and battles in great detail, and always keeps it interesting.
One of his greatest works, the art of war in the sixteenth century, is available on Amazon, at a price of two dollars and ninety nine cents in the US. Kindle edition. It is over eleven hundred pages, and covers sixteenth century warfare in great detail.
Also available is the complete multi volune The Art of War in the Middle Ages, for ninety nine cents at Amazon in the US, kindle edition. This covers medieval warfare in great detail from the dark ages to the longbow, and is the complete edition.
It can be confusing, because Amazon also sells some of the volumes seperately, but I was able to find
The complete multi volume set, in one purchase. It is one kindle book.
There are other books by Oman at Amazon, but these two are magnificnet, and so affordable. I have read both of them, with great pleasure and learning.

Excellent!
Thanks for posting this, I bought them both.
I also found out that Amazon has a free Kindle Cloud Reader app for my desktop, so I don't need to buy a Kindle (unless I want to read in bed.)

Just finished the chapter on the rise and fall of the Swiss, fascinating and very well written.
Also found the Kindle Cloud Reader app for Android phones, so now I can read anywhere

I also think Oman writes very well. He is much more fun to read than many modern historians. And the data is solid.

Re: Two magnificent books on military history
Just read this passage from Oman's A History of the Art of War in the Sixteenth Century:
I had an "Aha!" moment when I saw, "...but depended entirely for its efficiency on getting your enemy to be obliging enough to deliver a frontal attack."
I believe a lot of players figured that out in the Hundred Years War tournament earlier this year
