Okay, progress, I went back and redownloaded the vanilla game. Then, I put the Potzblitz data folder in the Commander the great war folder. The potzblitz screen and music comes up but when I select to launch the game, it crashes. Any advice?

Some clarifications to exclude the most common issues:

1. Was your vanilla version of the game updated to version 1.6.6 (last official update) before you applied the mod?

2. When you copied the mod's DATA folder over the original DATA folder you of course did choose to overwrite the old files, when prompted, right?

3. You can only choose either the 1914-18 or the Potzblitz scenario (both are identic)...none of the other scenarios will work any longer.

4. You can only choose english language, choosing other languages will crash the game.

5. Otherwise I need to have a look at the crash report which is stored in a file called ctgw.log which is usually to be found in your Documents folder, so look in "My Documents\My Games\Commander The Great War".

Put the ctgw.log into a .zip archive and attach it to your post using the forum's "upload attachment" feature.
You can find the upload button in the bottom left corner of the reply box after you click on "full editor and preview".

Alternatively you can just open the ctgw.log into a standard text editor, scroll to the end and post the last few lines of the "error" message at the end, which will give me a hint about what is wrong.

#1. It is the 1.5 version that I downloaded. Any chance you can give me the link to the the 1.6 latest version.

#2 Yes, I overrode the old data file

#3 Yes, I only tried to play the 1914 scenario

#4 Yes, only using English

#5, not necessary until I try #1 above.

I assume you are using the PC (not Steam) version.

The 1.6.6 update is here:

You'll need to register on Slitherine's homepage in order to download the update.

After the update, copy the mod's DATA folder again over the DATA folder in the game's main directory.

Yes, I am using the PC version. I verified and my game is 16.6 and that is what I put the potsblitz data file over. So, here is the ctgw file for you to look at. It's #5 on your list.

If the mod would be correctly installed, it would be mentioned in the logfile like in the last line here:

Success! The Potzblitz game is working!

Here is what I went back and did. I realized that I had put the data into the previous 15.1 game edition. Then I downloaded the 16.6 over that. So, I just went back and put the Potzblitz data file over the 16.6 game edition and now the game is working like it should. Hopefully it will work swimmingly from here.

Triumph! :D Great to hear that.

Now there's one last thing: since April when V15.1 was uploaded some more bugs got fixed, so you should apply the small script fix attached to this post.
It also contains a Data folder. Copy that over the existing folder just like you did before to have the latest up to date version.

Hi Robotron,

I have been playing your game and I must say, it is a big improvement on the vanilla version. However, the game just did something really tricky and perhaps you can explain it to me. I'm playing the Germans go East strategy. We did not declare war on Belgium. However, in 1915 the allies started to pass through Belgium without declaring war on it and are attacking Germany. Is there political option the computer played to get free passage through Belgium? How as the Central Powers do I avoid that?

I'm afraid you can't entirely avoid this in the current version of the mod. When playing the "Aufmarsch Ost" scenario from 1915 on the AI may randomly play the "Belgian neutrality at stake" event which will make Belgium susceptible to "influence" diplomatic actions (see page 23 of the PDF manual) which will lead to Belgium joining the Entente after several turns unless you also invest diplomatic points to counter-influence.

For the moment this acts as a random timer for Germany to deal with Russia before having to divert forces to the west. I'll refine the procedure in the next version of the mod.

Good evening
Having a problem with the Mod
Was working OK yesterday & I saved game when finished
Came to load today & can click in Steam to play but nothing after that just hangs on Play Commander Screen
Original version is now working OK via Steam
I loaded in a separate location the base version & overlaid the POTZBLITZ data file & this still hangs as above

The crash was caused by an incorrectly named widescreen picture that only gets displayed once a year.

Here's the fix for your problem, copy the Data folder from the archive over the game's Data folder

Hi Robotron,

Glad to see you have a new interest to this game :)
Once again, thanks for all this big job you have done since all these years : you have given hours and hours of pleasure, it is incredible !
I have played several games with the new version (most of them on the Entente side) and it is really cool as usual. I have fews remarks : I never have the "Canadian corps" and "Gallipoli" events and when I play the "Arab revolt" event, the game crash but maybe is it because the Ottomans have played a unit on the area where they are supposed to appear ?
Also, for me, Russians are still too powerful if you don't attack too much like in reality : don't you think it could be an idea to make it harder to improve them during the war ? It would show the difficulty for them to equip units with the best material and they would lose more men like in reality.

Also, if it is not too complicated to create, I still think that having a kind of crazy game could be fun and would create new challenges. I was thinking about the opportunity to have an event for each neutral country to put pressure on them to join the war with an half half chance to join your side or the opposite. What do you think about it ?

And like Munt, I am still really excited to play one day the Russian Civil war extension with all the new challenges it would create. Do you think you will be able to finish it someday ? (I pray you will say yes haha)

1. "No Canadian Corps":
the Canadians will only appear if you have played "Royal Navy review" before or if the North Sea is blockaded in 1914. The Canadian Corps event will be discarded at the start of 1915 because it is no longer important by then anymore.

2. "No Gallipoli" when playing Entente:
you must assemble as many Entente ships as possible near Anzak Koyu for this event to become available and even then it's not guaranteed. Instead of waiting for the event to show up the Entente player should rather try to execute the invasion himself by actually moving unit transports there, if so desired. If "HMS Hampshire is sunk" event happens before Gallipoli, there will be no Gallipoli because Lord Kitchener who made the plan for the invasion is already dead.

3. Game crashes when Arabian Revolt is played: have you applied the last Scriptfix I provided? If you did then I need a ctgw.log file with the error report as usual.

We experiencing a crash in multiplayer, the game quits totally before the new turn events shows up.
