Infantry Board Game Counters Mod

Post by seanny »

I have made some Board Game Counters for basic Infantry in Panzer Corps.
I have made a Unit Base in Green and then based common Infantry Pictures on top of this.
I like the effect in game ,it reminds me of a cross between Conflict of Heroes Boardgame (big counters) and Tide of Iron Boardgame (tank miniatures on board map).
I have made a basic start which does not include many counters yet ,but I like the view on screen where some Infantry are based and specialist infantry are unbased.
No tanks or other units other than Infantry are based.
I will add to my Based Units I think ,however the composite based/unbased view on screen for me is quite pleasant already.

might work better as NATO style symbols with some number stats on the counters as well. has that been tried before?

Thanks for your reply.

My initial aim was to do exactly as you suggested.
However when I made my Basing Counter I had the idea that it might be easier and probably look better if I just cut/pasted the existing Infantry 3d looking 2d sprites onto the counter.
I may make some nato counters as well ,but at present I am having some fun with my existing presentation.
It reminds me a lot of Conflict of Heroes Board Game Counters.

Funny that you asked about an existing Mod that may of done the same thing.
I have a thread on Steam where I discussed this topic and decided to make my own version since I could not find an existing download I could try.

It just makes the game look different on screen.
The normal Infantry Units now look like they are Board Game Counters,
It Mimics a Board Game Miniatures look.
I play Board Games in physical form where I mix and match Counters and Miniatures on a Board Game Map. This looks much the same.

I like changing things ,I use or make basic Mods for all the Games I play.

if you could make the map look like a board game - maybe something like panzerblitz or some thing similar (more recent). just thinking it's a cut and paste job with internet search resources - no graphical skill required.

Good suggestion about a Board Game Map .
I do like the existing Map as is but it could be a bit of fun.

I will look at the Tiles Folder maybe and see if I could make some basic change.

Interesting aesthetic!
On the first screenshot I'm having some trouble with the terrain, beneath the infantry units which are not on city tiles.
Imho the overlap and the terrain recognition would point towards "round" counters, like Stretegic Command.
Or perhaps some transparency, though this might be a bit against the board game vibe?
longer, alternative "PG" like Campaign new version 0.34 from 2011.08.02 (another bugfix & now in zip format)

To Terminator ,
Just realized you made that Mod- fabulous job..
I checked out your beautiful mod and downloaded it.
I am sure other Users here would be most interested as well.
The Mod you have linked is really cool, a huge amount of work has gone into that and it looks great.
It does fit the criteria for what I initially wanted.

I did have a vision of a Company sized Battle though ,where each strength point represents 10(maybe 20) men or else 1 AFV though.
The markings in that mod are Divisions ,which is correct I assume for the Game Scale.
I could make a personal edit and change the markings to II rather than XX.
I just had a really quick go at a personal edit on these transparent bases ,it is harder than I thought -they are only half transparent ,this idea just for personal use would be a difficult and time consuming process ,I actually tried removing all of the numbers bar the 2 bottom icons on a sample infantry and I was not happy with preliminary result in game.
I also would prefer only Infantry Nato Symbols , I could selectively use just the Infantry Units "as is" .

Another Idea;
In pursuit of my Company Scale Idea,
I have also made an Extended Range Mod ,
bit of a grandiose term ,
I have changed unit ranges to be much greater than normal to emulate more of a Board Game like Panzer Leader for example.
Sacrilegious to Purists I would think ,but I am having a bit of fun with it.
See,

To Locarnus ,
Thanks for your interest and kind words.

As far as Counters blocking underlying terrain this is true.
I could get round it by making my Counters smaller but I do like the big size due to the Conflict of Heroes Board Game similarities.
You can use a tab on the rhs of the screen to check terrain type though as a fix/workaround for this issue, I do this.

The other problem with making my Counters smaller is I have to be really accurate with my juxta positioning of the Infantry Sprite on top of my Counter -I could do it but it would take me a bit of time and I would have to use a grid template whereas my existing job was just by eye.

As far as transparency goes for the Counter bases ,I did not really want to do this.
I just had a really quick go at transparency for a single test green base (german Whrmact Inf) ,it worked and I could see the underlying terrain but the Infantry Sprite did not contrast/stand out as well as I would of liked.
As a teaser ,in case you play Valor & Victory ,I have done transparent AFVS for that game.

Board Game Hexes with Black Dots.
Default Layer Bases ,Dry, Frozen, Muddy.
Makes the Map look a bit more Boardgamey ,plus is handy for counting range if you don't use Hexes normally.
