Mouvement (go to 3.5)

Post by gentijojo »

Hello,

- Why HF have strategic movement and other units do not ?
- Why can the cavalry turn 180 then 2 MU then turn 180 and not turn 180 is a move ?

To give more possibility of maneuvering and bouncing in the games, i propose :
- A strategic movement for all units.
- Turn 180 then advance - 2MU for undrilled cavalry and drilled units .

Thanks.

Increasing movement of HF to 4MU is not a "strategice move' - if anything that would be the double move when accompanied by a commander.
We allow HF to move 4MU when not close to the enemy because they are not restrained by having to move in quite as close formation until they get close to the enemy.
- Why can the cavalry turn 180 then 2 MU then turn 180 and not turn 180 is a move ?
2 reasons:
1) Cavalry are there to threaten the enemy. If you don't want to fight then they should be elsewhere. The "retire 2MU and face forwards" is to allow a small fall-back while still shooting (for bow and javelin armed cavalry). We allow spear-armed cavalry to do the same, acting as semi-skirmishers, but because they don't generally have very many spears (3 at most) they can't actually cause much damage - so their firing is ignored.
2) It creates drawn games - to allow cavalry to turn around and move away would make them almost impossible to catch, so we'd end up with a game where the weaker cavalry units spend all their time running away - with no risk to themselves. We are trying to ensure that players make an effort try to 'win the game' rather than trying 'not to lose'.
The rule of thumb is "If you don't want a BG in a particular position - don't put them there' because the rules don't help you to recover easily from your mistakes.
