Campio - Season 6?

Post by kronenblatt »

'Campio' is Medieval Latin for champion or combatant in a duel, originally stemming from Ancient Latin's 'campus', meaning a place of action!

This small recurring "King of The Hill" knock-out tournament involves four players each new season (plus the reigning Champion of course  ). If you're interested, please write here or write me a PM.

Season 5 is now concluded, with Rosedelio again successfully defending the title and then retiring, undefeated through all of his five seasons. Elected into the Campio Hall of Fame of course! :)

We’ll now pause this tournament until four new players step in and we get a new interesting theme. :)

Players for Season 6
  1. MrCrow (suggested historical theme: Pyrrhus)
  2. ...
  3. ...
  4. ...
Hall of Fame

The Campio Hall of Fame is an exclusive community, consisting only of the Champions who have successfully defended their title three seasons in a row and thereafter retired.
  • Rosedelio (undefeated through five seasons!)

Rules

Post by kronenblatt »

Overview
  • 'Campio' (being Medieval Latin for champion or combatant in a duel, originally stemming from Ancient Latin's 'campus', meaning a place of action!) is a small and very simple and slow paced "King of The Hill" knock-out tournament.
  • Each season it involves only four players fighting to get promoted and as the one Challenger meet and defeat the reigning Champion, in order to become the NEW Champion!
  • Campio aims at being very laid-back and leisure, no points accumulating from season to season or from level to level, just a tournament running for the fun of it (hopefully).
  • In order to (hopefully) keep it running at a steady pace, Campio is deliberately kept small with only four players entering at the bottom level each season (plus a Champion awaiting them...).

The first season
  • The historical theme in the first season is "The Alexandrian Era", covering Macedon and the Diadochi kingdoms during the years between 336 and 168 BC, from Alexander the Great ascending the throne to the Roman conquest of Macedon.
  • The first season by definition lacks a Champion, why the winner in the middle level will immediately become the Champion for the second season.
Image

The historical theme
  • Every season will have its specific historical theme, such as a geographic scope or political situation and a time period, from where players can pick armies in Field of Glory II:Ancients.
  • A Champion who has successfully defended his title at least once, defeating a Challenger, will have the option (if he wants to) of selecting another historical theme for the next season.
  • The Champion and tournament organiser may also agree whether to continue with the same historical theme or select another one for the next season.
  • In any event, a historical theme will always run for at least two seasons, unless the tournament organiser decides otherwise.

The levels
  • The tournament consists of three levels:
    1. The bottom level, in which four players get allocated, two each, to two legs.
    2. The middle level, to which the two winners of the bottom level, one each from the two legs, get promoted.
    3. The top level, in which the winner of the middle level becomes the Challenger to fight the Champion.
Image

The players
  • Every season, four players start out at the bottom level, with two players each in two legs.
  • All players get their cool avatar appropriate for the historical theme.
  • The two players in each leg will fight each other for promotion to the middle level.
  • The player getting promoted from each leg will then in the middle level fight each other, with the winner reaching the top level and becoming the Challenger to fight the reigning Champion.
  • If needed, there will be a waiting list for players entering a new season.

The armies
  • In each leg the two players therein together decide on which two armies (whether with or without allies) appropriate for the historical theme, plus a map terrain, to use in their two battles as part of a mirror game.
  • This decision making for each new pair of players fighting applies on all three levels: bottom, middle, as well as top.

The battles
  • Battles take the following form in Field of Glory II:Ancients:
    • Paired (Mirror) Challenge.
    • Custom Battle.
    • Scenario: Open Battle.
    • Armies: as decided by the two players themselves in each leg.
    • Turn limit: 24 turns.
    • Force size: Large (1600 FP).
    • Map size: Wide (40x32).
    • Map type: as decided by the two players themselves in each leg.
    • No map re-rolls will be made.
  • Battles are to be concluded within a three-week period.
  • Battle outcomes, once resolved, are always posted by the victor, or the player having inflicted the most casualties, in a post of the tournament thread.

The effects of battle outcomes
  • Players will for each of their battles in a leg receive points equal to their inflicted casualties.
  • The player with the highest sum of points in each leg is the winner:
    • In the bottom and middle levels, the winner gets promoted to the next level.
    • In the top level (in the fight between the Challenger and the reigning Champion), the winner becomes the new Champion for the next season.
  • In the case of a tie, the player with the highest points in his two individual battles in the leg is the winner.
    • For example, if the points are 45-20 and 35-60 in the two battles, the player with 60 points is the winner.
  • Points are reset to zero between the levels, thus players do not carry over their points from one level to the next.
  • For the first season, since there is no Champion yet, the winner in the middle level will immediately become the Champion for the second season (thus, no battles at the top level).

The new seasons
  • Once one season is concluded, a new season will kick off with four players (new and/or old, but of course not the reigning and not yet retired Champion) at the bottom level to fight each other for promotion, through the bottom and middle levels.
  • The one player emerging as the winner of these four players and reaching the top level will then become the Challenger to fight the Champion.
  • And so on, season by season.
  • Losing players can decide to come back for another season, or lick their wounds and stay out for a while or never return, and new players can enter (and old ones re-enter).
  • If for a season, fewer than four players are available, the season will after a short while (say a week or so) kick off anyway with a reduced number of players, as long as there is at least one participating player (in addition to the Champion).
    • The bottom or even the middle level is then removed if necessary, for the purpose of keeping the tournament running and not stalling...
    • ... and in order to not keep the Champion waiting.

Hall of Fame
  • A player who has successfully defending the title as Champion three seasons in a row will retire and inducted into the Campio Hall of Fame.
  • The next season will then start (like the first one) without a reigning Champion.
  • Players inducted into the Campio Hall of Fame may in later seasons make comebacks as challengers and seek to regain former glories.

Rosedelio (Ptolemaic) defeats kronenblatt (Lysimachid) 49-15

In the center, the Ptolemaic army had more pikes they were able to use before the wider Lysimachid army could get too many flanks.

Rosedelio (Lysimachid) defeats kronenblatt (Ptolemaic) 60-59

The Thracians on the flanks made a poor showing, though they and the limited cavalry were able to delay the Ptolemaic flankers. It seemed like the Ptolemaic army would win, but the center of pikes just barely made up for their losses.

Rosedelio (Spartan) defeats TomoeGozen (Macedonian) 58-28

During the maneuvering, a gap formed in the Macedonian pike wall, which the Veteran Hoplites were able to exploit for flanks. Meanwhile, the Macedonian cav was delayed by other hoplites.

The Macedonians centered all their pikes to their left flank, where the Spartans had their weaker hoplites. Meanwhile, the thureos on the right helped delay some of the Spartans from flanking.
