Thanks for the game. The game was closer than the score indicates. Lady Luck was riding on the Catalan army’s shoulder.

Division 1
Kroche Italian (Ghibelline) 1200-1319 w German (Imperial) allies 57% loss
defeated
Triarii German (Imperial) 1200-1319 w Hungarian allies 65% loss
Germans advanced with water protecting their right, led by dismounted knights with a strong force of bowmen behind, spearmen protecting their right flank. Dismounted knights were held up for a short while by mounted Knights, but soon saw off all before them. Italian mounted knights broke through the spearmen to maul the bowmen. Italian spearmen engaged the German left flank where the melees were pretty even. Very close game where the German dismounted knights, after their initial success, could not make it in time to engage the Italian right before Italians secured victory. A couple of Italian units which had been routed by the Germans did rally once they had run far enough away, this prevented a German victory as did the lone German mounted knight unit which pursued off map and didn't reappear. 1 Triarii German (Imperial) 1200-1319 with Hungarian
defeats
6 batesmotel Byzantine 1042-1071
60-46
A fight of two halves.
Byzantine light horse archers and lancers quickly saw off the German right consisting of archers, spears and Xb despite some rough ground. Meanwhile the German dismounted men at arms trundled slowly towards all the Byzantine foot who used reverse for several turns.
As the German right disappeared and the Byzantines had a twenty point lead the men at arms caught up with the Skoutatoi and vented their frustration. Skoutatoi exited almost as quickly as the Byzantine cavalry had seen off the German right.
When the opposing survivors met up again the loss tally was pretty equal but the Byzantine arrows were used up and without tin openers the Byzantine cavalry were ground down by the dismounted knights.

by vakarr
Division C
vakarr (Thracian Roman client with Roman allies) in his last battle of this tournament defeats ggarynorman (Bosporan) 59-34
Two quite similar armies with the Bosporans having better cavalry and the Thracians having better infantry. The Thracians had a hill with some rough terrain on it on their right flank, opposite a small clear terrain hill on the Bosporan side. The Bosporans formed up several ranks deep between woods on their flanks. The Thracians formed up between their hill and a patch of rough ground on their left flank, with some light troops hidden in a wood right on the left edge of the battlefield.
As expected, the Bosporans sent some cavalry and light horse onto their hill, where the Thracian light horse and light infantry shot them up, causing them to charge off the hill. The Thracian heavy cavalry opposing them stayed on their hill and smashed the Bosporan cavalry opposing them when they followed up to the base of the hill - all except one lancer unit, which had a bit of luck and broke through the Thracian line, going deep into the Thracian rear. This completely disrupted the Thracian plans for a right hook attack on that flank.
Meanwhile, the Bosporan left advanced, led by their lancers. The Thracians hugged their bit of rough ground and as the Bosporans came closer, the Thracian light horse and light infantry sprung their ambush from the woods, though it took a few turns to get them into action. The combination of Thracian light horse, medium infantry, heavy cavalry, shooting casualties, and disordering terrain ended up defeating the Bosporan heavy cavalry.
However, the Thracians had to remove troops from their right flank to chase after the Bosporan lancers in their rear, and this stripped the troops in the centre and right flank of any flexibility. The Thracians were mostly pulled off their hill and stomped on by warbands and imitation legionaries. The allied Roman legionaries held their own and repeatedly defeated multiple opponents but things were looking bad in the centre and on the right.
Luckily the Bosporan lancers in the Thracian rear went back to contesting the Thracian right flank (insstead of heading for the Thracian rear), and the Thracian cavalry, returning from pursuit, won the fight. They smashed into the rear of the Bosporan infantry that was doing such damage to the Thracian right, and routed three units (two through reaction tests) in one turn. The Bosporan centre continued to fight well but it was game over. A hard fought game that often seemed to be in doubt. In this game, the light artillery unit on the hill often proved to be the decisive factor when shooting up the hordes of light infantry and other troops marching up towards it.

Aetius (German Imperial) defeats Garokan (Germans) 61-52
A close game, the Imperials beat back the insurrection, but took many losses in the process. The Imperials battered, and then took a hill, but at the same time the Germans broke through on their right, evening things out. It became a slog after that, and a bit of luck gave the Imperials the win. GG!

Captainwaltersavage Portuguese 1200-1319 with Berber (Marinid) defeated Triarii German (Imperial) 1200-1319 with Hungarian
56:30
The sun had nearly set by the time this battle ended. The Imperials started on a very defensible hill, with some woods not far from its base. The Portuguese decided to wait out on the plains and hope the Germans could be tempted down. Failing that some flanking attempts were started by the Portuguese in the hope that a hill attack might be possible with positional advantage. The Germans advanced and drove back the flanking cavalry and scattered the skirmishers that were hiding in the woods. The presence of the Massed dismounted knights in the German centre required the Portuguese to send their mounted knights against them. Despite the Portuguese attempts to shoot the foot knights and charge them repeatedly the centre became a stalemate. The battle was lost and won on the flanks. The Portuguese had the better of the luck, so that some timely rallies, and one incredible cavalry charge by some medium cavalry shifted the balance of advantage. The Portuguese light cavalry performed excellent service in the endgame helping disrupt/fragment crossbows - previously they had largely been neutralised by the German skirmishers. The desperate nature of the final moments are typified when some disrupted slingers were ordered to charge into some fragmented crossbows defending a village in the centre of the German line. Luckily for the Portuguese they succeeded and tipped the, likely, draw into a victory. The score has more to do with RNG than skill levels. My luck in the later medieval section has been contrastingly poor.
