Thanks for the fun match with the innovative land use tactics, kro!
Innovative but ultimately an epic failure á la Laserdisc! :) Fun though while it lasted.

Thracia saved!

Fresh off their victory in Dacia, the Romans and their Iazyges allies swept south to intercept some more Goths landing in Thrace near the administrative center at Byzantium. With plenty of flat ground to work with, the Iazygid lancers swept forward and pinned part of the host, while cracking open a hole in the center with the help of the Roman cataphracts. The auxiliaries rested on some rocks with not much to do, while the legions and allied warbands got stuck into a bloody melee with the Gothic chosen swordsmen. The Roman infantry wavered a bit under the Gothic assault, but the speedy lancers infiltrated the Gothic host and proceeded to rear charge anyone and everyone. The remaining Goths were escorted over to the "humanitarian aid shelters" to await processing by imperial bureaucrats.

Geffalrus (Romans and Iazyges) defeats doyley50 (Goths sans horses) 48-0

Aetius (Romans IV) defeats kronenblatt (Romans V) 61-58.

Honestly, I think kronenblatt should have won, I got super lucky in the end that a mediocre Roman unit didn't break/autobreak, and before that there were several other things that helped bring up the ending like this. Good, super close game, and well-played by kronenblatt!^^

Pannonia is saved!

Out on a flat plain with little to interrupt the proceedings, the Iazyges and the Romans with Iazygid(?) allies got themselves into an old fashioned rodeo round-up. Lots of lancers with some infantry and ranged units in support. The Romans took an early lead by leveraging the disruption abilities of their light artillery, but the superior numbers of Iazyges lancers allowed them to start flanking the cavalry battle before the Roman support infantry could get into position. The battle looked likely to settle into a bloody drawn out affair where neither side could easily clinch the victory.......when the Iazyges king fell in combat, dragged down by a tag team of Roman cavalry and enemy Iazyges lancers. Of all the times to have the bad luck of a CinC death, this was probably the best one to have, as Aetius himself suffers no penalty from it.

Geffalrus (Romans and Iazyges) defeats Aetius39 (Iazyges) 17-38 via Remove the Head condition

In the meantime, the combatants all immediately stopped stabbing each other and decided to just head home. If only all wars could be solved so easily.......

Good game overall, and an interesting examination of vices and virtues of mass lancer combat in this time period.

Geffalrus (Romans III with Iazyges) crawls painfully across the finish line to defeat Aetius39 (Romans IV) 55-60

Had two cohesion checks for our respective fragmented units gone slightly differently this last turn, the results would have been flipped. Aetius brought his best infantry supported by a horde of cheap cavalry, while I brought my best cavalry supported by a host of cheap infantry. Aetius adopted a defensive box formation that I struggled to outflank, and when I got close, his tough infantry surged forward to start dunking on my auxilia out in the open. Superior warbands, however, ended up being our achilles' heel as we each failed cohesion tests on our warbands in otherwise even contests. My warband and general collapsed on my right, leading to an endless cascade of failure that rolled me up. Aetius's warband in the center had to fall back, allowing my few veteran legions to exploit a gap in the center. Battered and bruised, my superior cavalry drove off half of Aetius's cavalry, but were steadily worn down by skirmisher attacks and never managed to deliver the rear charge I needed to end the battle early. For almost the entire melee clash, a nomad light horse and a javelin light horse were locked in combat, where each turn, I was SURE that my light horse with sword advantage would win the fight with 50% odds.......and every turn it was indecisive. It took a random auxilia charging the light javelin horse to actually kill the ultimate survivor.

The battle came to an end as night approached; Aetius's swarmy cavalry were flanking my exposed infantry, while my Cataphract was getting lucky with melee rolls vs Aetius's veteran legion. With both of us in reach of 60%, my cataphract managed to break the legion before more of my army collapsed. GG to Aetius39 who played an incredible match. Normally I would post a pic from the battlefield, but there's only one image that does a fight of this magnitude justice:

Entertaining report, many thanks, G.! :)

So it was this battle 1a?

Quick update on the results, as the press are on a go slow.

2a. Conquest: Stew101 (Romans I, 1600 FP) versus Doyley50 (Romans II, 1600 FP) in Africa (XXIX). Desert.
Victory for Stew101 42 - 16.

4a. Conquest: Doyley50 (Romans II, 1600 FP) versus Stew101 (Romans I, 1600 FP) in Narbonensis (VII). Mediterranean Agricultural.
Victory for Stew101 41 - 5.

The Gods have called time on the two outstanding raids.
Bad weather or something.........

1b. Raid: Geffalrus (Franks, 1600 FP) versus Stew101 (Romans I, 1600 FP) in Germania Inferior (IV). North European Agricultural.
Current score has the Romans ahead 11 - 9.
This game was likely to end with a Roman victory, with the seven war-bands on the right flank, outflanked & outnumbered, with cavalry behind them.

2b. Raid: Stew101 (Goths, 1600 FP) versus Geffalrus (Romans III, 1600 FP) in Moesia Inferior (XII). North European Agricultural.
Current score again has the Romans ahead 30 - 12.
This game was definitely ending with a Roman victory in next two game turns.

The Roman Tribune - 4th Edition

In Bed with the Enemy

In recent editions we has exposed the risk of usurpers stripping the defences of Rome, to further their nefarious ends and we have highlighted the shocking raids and incursions of the barbarian hordes into the Empire.
Now we must report on the cosy relationship between the usurper Geffalrius and his Barbarian allies. This so called Emperor increasingly relies on these heathens, to further his aims. This paper is getting reports of Iazyges horsemen and Franks, making up large contingents of Geffalrian armies. The hordes ravaging the Empire should be opposed and destroyed, not invited into the heart of the Empire.
Who knows what the ultimate aims of these heathens are? They serve for Roman gold now, whilst their brethren run riot elsewhere. Some day they may demand too much, or turn on the arm that feeds them, if faced with fighting against their countrymen.
Does Geffalrius really think he controls this cancer he has planted into the heart of our Empire? Or is he a man in bed with a wolf, that will eventually tear off his arm?
Be warned citizens, the actions of Geffalrius may be the doom of many of us.

Great Victories for the Emperor

The paper can also report the rise of a new usurper Dolesius, from the pack of traitors currently resident in Rome. Little is known of this new comer, but his ancestry is thought to be provincial. It has therefore taken him time to secure his base and the true Emperor Stewarius has used this confusion to sieze the initiative and free further provinces in Europa and Afrika, from his yoke.
Our attached reporters have witnessed two outstanding battlefield victories, with the Emperor Stewarius leading from the front and placing his trust in the Gods and the might of his arms. At the Battle of Metallis, the Emperor personally led the most exposed auxiliary cohort of his army in a sweeping left hook. This ambitious manoeuvre out flanked the enemy legionary line, which the Emperor successfully rolled up.
In a second battle the Emperor used massed artillery to blunt the usurpers thrusts and at the right moment he led the heavy cavalry forward in the decisive charge.
The Emperor has also dispatched one of his able subordinates to turn back the Frankish hordes threatening the Gallic provinces. These hordes have been met and defeated and their total destruction was only prevented by an untimely change in the weather.
This is the inspired leadership the Empire has been lacking.
Citizens the Emperor Stewarius is the saviour and the future of the Empire.

Vivat Roma et Imperator

Round III (264-266 AD): Administration

Post by kronenblatt »

In this round III, the victor of a Conquest attack gains control over the loser's province-at-stake, plus one additional province, i.e., two provinces per victory.

Changes to province control
  • Stew101 gains control from Doyley50 over the provinces of Agri Decumates (VI), Raetia (VIII), Italia (XIII), and Africa (XXIX).
  • Geffalrus gains control from Aetius39 over the provinces of Asia (XIX) and Galatia (XX).
  • Aetius39 gains control from kronenblatt over the provinces of Syria (XXIII) and Phoenicia (XXV).
  • Doyley50 is thus eliminated as a contender to the imperial purple. Many thanks for participating and hope you enjoyed it!
Looted provinces
  • Stew101's Germania Inferior (IV), leading him to suffer a permanent -25 FP penalty in all future Conquest battles, i.e., at 1575 FP currently.
  • Geffalrus 's Moesia Inferior (XII), leading him to suffer a permanent -25 FP penalty in all future Conquest battles, i.e., at 1575 FP currently.
Ineligible Raid attacks
  • Iazyges and Goths are not allowed to raid any of Geffalrus' provinces next round.

Round IV (266-268 AD): attack declarations

Post by kronenblatt »

Attack declarations (order based on number of controlled provinces)
  1. Stew101: (11.5 provinces, 1575 FP): March 25
  2. Geffalrus (10.5, 1575 FP): March 26
  3. Aetius39 (4.5, 1600 FP): March 27
  4. kronenblatt (2, 1600 FP): March 28
Please note
  • No Raid attacks by Iazyges and Goths upon any of Geffalrus' provinces are allowed this round.
  • The attack declaration should be made in a post in the campaign thread on the forum.
  • There are two types of attacks (Conquest and Raid).
  • Players are each round required (if possible) to declare one Conquest attack but can decide whether to also declare one Raid attack that round.
    • A player’s Conquest and Raid attacks in a round cannot be made upon one and the same Roman faction but must be made upon two different Roman factions.
  • Example on how to express an attack declaration:
    • Conquest: kronenblatt attacks rs2excelsior's Italia (XIII) from Raetia (VII).
    • Raid: Franks attack Germania Inferior (IV) from homelands.
    • Raid: Franks attack from Germania Inferior (IV). (this normal raid attack requires Germania Inferior (IV) to have already been successfully raided and thus looted by the Franks.)
    • (Sea) Raid: Goths attack Macedonia (XVII) from homelands. (sea raid attacks are always made from Goths' homelands.)
  • Date (midnight CET (Rome) time) above indicates deadline, after which opportunity for you to declare attack is forfeited and the player next in line may declare his attack.
  • Once you have declared an attack, please PM the player next in line, who will then be free to declare his attack, up to his deadline, so we all don't need to wait for each player's deadline.

Well now, isn't that interesting. After all his tough talk, the usurper squatting in Rome is setting his sights on the minor warlord in Aegyptus instead of marching to the Danube to back up his words with swords. Is he perhaps.......intimidated by my looooooooong.......string of victories? My Iazygid lady-friends are unimpressed with his bluster. No matter, if Rome won't come to you, you go to Rome.
