Clash of Civilisations (Swifter than Eagles): Concluded

Post by kronenblatt »

Let's celebrate the release of Swifter than Eagles, the new Field of Glory II:Ancients DLC in a very long time...!

Clash of Civilisations covers a thousand years, from 1600 BC to 600 BC (over a maximum of seven rounds), with four major factions (Assyrians, Babylonians, Egyptians, and Hittites) fighting for supremacy over the fertile crescent. Each major faction is represented by a player and starts off in its homeland region, attempting to progress along their respective paths through fighting and defeating minor factions, with the aim of conquering (and holding) Carchemish (1) (the region in which the four paths intersect) first and thus win the tournament.

The battles will involve players' major factions against minor factions (played by one of the three other players) as defenders, both army lists overlapping the time period of the round in question (but no consideration to which region being attacked). So players will fight with and against many different army list over the centuries, applying minor factions both as allies and as defending opponents. But in the end, only one player (if one at all) will be able to reach and hold Carchemish (1) and win the tournament!

Clash of Civilisations was concluded in Round 5 (910 - 745 BC) when kronenblatt managed to retain control over Carchemish (1) one full round and thus could claim victory!

Many thanks to the other participants: Badger73, dim30, and rbodleyscott!

Rules

Post by kronenblatt »

Overview
  • Clash of Civilisations (in its original setup) involves four players, each representing one major faction:

    Image
  • This tournament covers the region around the eastern Mediterranean and the one thousand years from 1600 BC to 600 BC, divided into seven rounds with (intentionally overlapping) corresponding time periods, as follows:
    1. 1600-1335 BC.
    2. 1390-1150 BC.
    3. 1205-990 BC.
    4. 1045-855 BC.
    5. 910-745 BC.
    6. 800-660 BC.
    7. 715-600 BC.
  • Players will also play as (non-player) minor factions when defending regions against attacks by other players.
  • The tournament works as a type of 'ladder' game, each player's major faction starting out in its homelands and following its own path of regions towards Carchemish (1).
  • The tournament lasts for a maximum of seven rounds and will end once at least one of the following occurs:
    • a player claims victory through retaining control over Carchemish (1) one full round or controlling Carchemish (1) at the end of round 7.
    • all four players' Initiatives are zero or lower.
  • If no player can claim victory as per above, the winner will be the one with the highest Initiative, or (if a tie) with the highest casualty difference against the other player(s) with the same Initiative.
  • Please note that a player must own the Swifter than Eagles DLC in order to take part in the tournament.

Factions

Players and major factions
  • The four players permanently represent and use their respective major factions and their army lists.
  • At the start of the tournament, each player has Initiative of 7 but controls no regions.
  • The players each make one attack every round (for as long as they still have an Initiative level of at least 1) upon neighbouring regions along their respective paths to Carchemish (1).
  • The attacking player:
    • uses an army list of his major faction as the main army, and
    • a compulsory minor faction as allies (see below, under (Non-player) minor factions, on availability of minor factions), but
      • may in maximum one attack elect to not use any allies at all.
  • The selected major faction's army list must overlap (at least partially, with 1 year at least) the time period of the round in question.
  • The armies of the major factions are using the base game army lists as follows:

    Image
(Non-player) minor factions
  • There are 17 minor factions in the tournament.
  • The minor factions serve two purposes:
    • ally armies to the major factions in their attacks (as selected by the attacking player).
    • armies defending against major factions' attacks (as selected by the defending player).
  • Minor factions are not linked to any particular region but can be applied anywhere, for any region, with no geographical constraints.
    • Example: The Greek minor faction is allowed to be selected for Babylon (11), whether as defending army or as ally army to the attacker.
  • However, the following limitations and restrictions apply:
    • Ally armies: the selected minor faction's army list must overlap (at least partially, with 1 year at least) the time period of the major faction's army list as well as the time period of the round.
    • Defending armies: the selected minor faction's army list must overlap (at least partially, with 1 year at least) the time period of the round.
    • A minor faction can be selected only once by a player (i.e., either as an ally army or as a defending army) during the course of the tournament.
      • Example: if a player selects Syro-Canaanite and its 1594-1276 BC list is chosen (whether as ally or defending army), he cannot select any Syro-Canaanite army list again as ally or defending army.
  • If no minor factions are available to the player as ally or defending army (due to already having been selected by the player), his opponent in the battle freely gets to choose which minor faction army list to use (provided as always that the overlap requirement above is fulfilled).
    • However, an attacking player who has not yet elected to not use any allies at all will then need to do so this round.
  • A minor faction's army list can be selected by more than one player in the same round, whether as ally army or defending army.
  • However, if a minor faction is selected as ally army by an attacking player, the defending player is not allowed to select the same minor faction as defending army.
  • The armies of the minor factions are using the base game army lists as follows:

    Image

Download
  • The Clash of Civilisations v1 module is needed to set up and play battles with the appropriate allies.
  • Version 1 is now available for download in-game.
  • Download the module through the following usual steps:
    1. Click on the Download community scenarios button at the top of the main screen of the game.
    2. Select Clash of Civilisations v1 (MP).
    3. Click on Download the Selected Campaign.
  • The mod will then be automatically saved into the the My Games\FieldOfGlory2\MULTIPLAYER\ folder, within the MP_CLASH_CIVILISATIONS_V1 subfolder.
  • (The single-player (SP) version is available for download in the same way, allowing the use of Clash of Civilisations armies in battles against the AI.)
Image

Map and regions
  • The colors on the map indicate regions controlled by the different players and their major factions.
  • There are in total 13 regions on the map.

    Image
  • Major factions control no regions at start.
  • Major factions follow individual paths on their respective routes to Carchemish (1) with regions to conquer as follows (and in that order):
    • Assyrian: Musasir (10), Ninive (6), Harran (2), Carchemish (1).
    • Babylonian: Babylon (11), Sippar (7), Palmyra (3), Carchemish (1).
    • Egyptian: Memphis (12), Jerusalem (8), Tyre (4), Carchemish (1).
    • Hittite: Hattusa (13), Iconium (9), Mazaca (5), Carchemish (1).
  • Control of regions is gained through attacks made by victorious major factions.
  • Control of regions can never be lost, with exception of Carchemish (1).

Rounds
  • The tournament involves seven rounds, but may end early if a player can claim victory or all four players' Initiatives are zero or lower.
  • Each round corresponds to a time period:
    Image
  • A round consists of the following four phases:
    1. Attack declarations: Players with an Initiative level of 1 or higher and not controlling Carchemish (1) announce through posting in the tournament thread their attacks and which army lists (main and allies) to use.
    • Players can announce attacks without having to wait for each other and without any particular order.
    2. Defending army selections: The players set to defend the respective regions (see Defenses below) announce (also through posting in the tournament thread) which army lists to use.
    3. Battle resolutions: All battles will be simultaneously played and completed in FoG2 during a period of four weeks.
    4. Administration: changes of region control, re-calculation of Initiative levels.

Attacks
  • A player with an Initiative level of 1 or higher and not controlling Carchemish (1) is every round required to attack the next un-controlled region on his path to Carchemish (1).
    • This means that if a player controls Carchemish (1), he will not make any attack but only potentially defend against other players' attacks.
  • The attacked region will be defended by one of the other four players (independent of their Initiative levels), based on a rotating schedule (unless Carchemish (1) is attacked and already controlled by another player)
  • Example on how to express attack declarations (assuming first round 1600-1335 BC):
    • kronenblatt attacks Memphis (12) using Egyptian 1550-1451 BC with Elamite 1500-816 BC allies.
Defenses
  • The general rule is that all regions are defended by:
    • one of the other four players (independent of his Initiative level) in the tournament, based on a pre-set rotating schedule as follows:
      Image
    • a minor faction (as selected by the defending player) with no allies allowed.
  • However, in the case of Carchemish (1) being attacked and already controlled by a player, it will be defended by that player using an army list of his major faction but with no allies allowed.
  • Example on how to express defenses (assuming first round 1600-1335 BC):
    • rbodleyscott defends Memphis (12) using Amorite 2000-1595 BC.

Battles

Setting up the battle
  • The defender creates the challenge in the FoG2 Multiplayer Lobby, always with defender as Side B (in order for the other player to immediately be able to deploy and make first round when accepting the challenge).
  • In order to create a challenge with Clash of Civilisations armies, after having launched New Challenge and Create Skirmish, press Select Another Module and therein Clash of Civilisations v1, which will make the armies for Clash of Civilisations available.
  • When the challenge has been created, the defender, for information, sends a PM to the attacker and makes a post in the tournament thread.
  • Battles take the form of a Custom Battle as Open Battle with:
    • Turn limit: 24 turns.
    • Force size: Large (1600 FP for both attacker and defender).
    • Map size: Wide (40x32).
    • Map type: Middle-Eastern Agricultural, Middle-Eastern Plain, or Desert, as selected by the defender.
      • No map re-rolls will be made.
Concluding and reporting the battle
  • Players commit to concluding their battles within the four-week deadlines after the tournament organiser has listed the battles to be fought that round and to adhere to the results derived from the adjudication mechanism in the case of failure to meet such deadline.
  • Battle outcome, once resolved, is always posted by the victor, or the player having inflicted the most casualties, in a post of the tournament thread.
Effects of battle outcome
  • The side routing the enemy is considered the victor of the battle, and the routed side correspondingly considered the loser of that battle.
  • If neither side routs the enemy, neither side is considered victor or loser for that battle and the battle is considered a draw.
  • Players can also agree to a draw before the battle commences or at any time during the battle, in which case neither player is considered victor or loser for that battle.
  • A draw will reduce Initiative by 1 for both attacking and defending players.
  • A win by the attacking player will gain him control over the attacked region.
    • In the case of one or more victorious attacks upon Carchemish (1) in the same round, the player (whether attacking or defending major faction already in control) with the highest casualty difference among the major factions involved in these battles will gain control (or retain control, in the case of a defending major faction) .
  • A loss by either player will reduce his Initiative by 1.

Round 1 (1600-1335 BC): Attack declarations

Post by kronenblatt »

Please declare (through posting in the tournament thread) your respective attacks (one each) on the next un-controlled region on your respective paths to Carchemish (1) (for Assyrians 10 Musasir, Babylonians 11 Babylon, Egyptians 12 Memphis, and Hittites 13 Hattusa) by February 28 at the latest.

Example on how to express attack declarations (assuming first round 1600-1335 BC):
kronenblatt attacks Memphis (12) using Egyptian 1550-1451 BC with Elamite 1500-816 BC allies.

Thanks! Just to be clear: you’re using your option for no allies already now? Since you can play as attacker without allies maximum one round.

The attacking player uses an army list of his major faction as the main army, and a compulsory minor faction as allies, but may in maximum one attack elect to not use any allies at all.

While I missed the "maximum one attack" without allies when I read the rules, I'll still stay with my choice to forego having any this first round. Thanks for asking and making sure.
