Tides of Conquest Late Medieval campaign, turn 4, 1312 CE

Post by Nijis »

Welcome all!
We're on turn 1, 1300 CE. Turn orders will be due in about a week from now (May 28). As this is the first turn, I won't worry about enforcing deadlines, but if you ever can't get a turn in on time I can always generate your realm's orders using the AI.

IF YOU WANT TO USE THE UNITY TOOL
Download the tool from this thread:
https://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=85060

Download the latest turn save document. 1300 CE is here. I can also email them.
https://www.mediafire.com/file/dur99lwe ... 0.xml/file

Put the save document in this file on your computer. If it doesn't exist, you can double check the address on the load/save screen of the Tides of Conquest tool.
C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\DefaultCompany\TidesOfConquestUnity
Do your orders (see below).
Save your orders
Find the orders file and email it to me
Add a pretext for your invasions if you want for the battle flavor text

IF THE TOOL DOESN"T WORK FOR YOU
Just let me know and I'll run you through the options. I'll generate some AI orders, and you can tell if you approve or would alter them shortly.

STARTING BATTLES
The attacker issues the challenge. Both army lists and the terrain should be listed in the list of battles. Default size should be 1200 points, but you can do 1600-point battles if you both agree. The attacker can choose allies, but the defender should use the vanilla list (this is so that the attacker can issue challenges quickly). Report to me the scores when done.
I know that sometimes both sides end up in terrain where neither side wants to attack. In this case, the attacking side should probably bit the bullet, as a 0-0 draw means that the attacker's resources are wasted.

SCORING AND STRATEGY:
This is supposed to be more of an immersive experience than a competitive one, but the game does keep track of wins and losses as well as a general "Legacy" score. If your realm gets wiped out, you get to start over with a new one (often a successor state) on the next turn.
Don't worry too much about the politcal decisions! All realms decay over time, but as long as you can win battles, you should be able to keep going.
Attack, if you have the resources. Even successful raiding gets victory points that expand your sphere of influence. Think of it as something like this: your neighbor mistreats your merchants, as often happens, so you launch a punitive expedition. Now all the weaker states around you are giving your merchants preferential terms. If you attack a neutral, then it will ally with another player who will control the army.
The only tricky part is running a migratory horde. You want to conquer a new homeland before your endurance runs out. This usually gives you about 5-7 turns, depending on how battles go. You need to win a solid victory, by a margin greater than twice the province's defense, to settle.

Feel free and attack any realms who do not have a player. One of you can volunteer to play their armies, and if no one is available, I'll fight that battle.

The year is 1300 AD. Though the last crusaders have been expelled from the Holy Land, the great struggle between Christendom and Islam is simply moving on to a new phase. The Ottomans, a rising power in Anatolia, have set their sights on the city of Constantinople as the seat of a new Rome. Facing them are the Christian powers of Hungary and Venice. A second front in this great war runs across the Iberian peninsula, where the kingdoms of Aragon and Castile battle the Berber Almohads. But internal Christian and Muslim conflicts run just as hot as the inter-religious ones. France is challenging England for dominance of the North Sea littoral, while the Holy Roman Empire, France, Aragon, Hungary and Venice all aspire to control of Italy. The East is no less divided, with the Ottomans facing off against Mamluke Egypt for the mantle of the Abbasid caliphate. Finally, the westernmost successor-states of Chingiz Khan's Mongolian empire, the Golden Horde and the Ilkhanate, still mostly Tengrist though considering conversion to Islam, look to resume their ferocious westward drive - if they can refrain from going to war against each other.

Orders are in and processed! Here is the map and commentary, followed by the list of battles...

Aragon continues the War of the Sicilian Vespers against France and all her works in the Mediterranean, as crown forces in Sicily harass the French-allied Angevins of Naples. A force of Catalan mercenaries meanwhile sails north to ravage Ghibelline coastal cities in Tuscany, as a pointed if plausibly deniable warning to the German Emperor that he should remain north of the Alps.

Castile meanwhile continues the Reconquista with a raid into Andaluz. The cosmopolitan Nasrid emir reaches out to Aragon for assistance, deciding that it has more in common with fellow Iberians, even Christian ones, than the somewhat austere Berber Marinids. The Marinids for their part launch a campaign to punish the tribes of the Saharan Atlas for sundry border offenses over the past years.

Sweden cites years of provocations by Norwegians who have crossed their border in search of cheap ale and mead, and launches a punitive expedition. A Swedish fleet lays anchor off of the Vestfold and the short summer night is lit by burning barns, while meanwhile the Norwegian jarls set sail from their fjords to answer to the muster of their king.

Akinjis and sipahis load their horses into shallow-drafted Black Sea galleys as the Ottomans take to the waters for their semiannual ghazzia against the foes of Islam. The target, Georgia, sends envoys to the Roman Emperor in Constantinople. The Romans send moral support but little else, as their attentions have been turned to raiding the Cuman tribes to their north, which for their part seek Ottoman backing.

The Holy Roman Empire, hegemon of central Europe, is engaged on many fronts. It sends its armies into the Low Countries in support of rebels against the French-allied duchy of Flanders, which it promises to bring into the Empire as another elector. Its armies also march south against the Venetian republic, which has been raising spice prices inordinately of late at German trade fairs. The empire's Ghibelline allies in northern Italy come under attack, as Tuscany comes under attack by both Aragonese and Venetian raiders and the French make forays into Lombardy. Hungarians meanwhile rampage into Austria, but the Baltic remains uncharacteristically peaceful as Poles, Lithuanians and Rus are all engaged elsewhere.

The Hungarian monarchy goes through its accounts, and finds that a number of debts to Guelph-allied Tuscan bankers can safely be written off as the holders have been purged by the ascendant Ghibellines. With the extra money, it sends armies into Austria and Serbia in support of various feudal claims. The former musters an imperial army in defense while the latter turns to Rome for support.

The English respond to a plea from the barons of Normandy for assistance against the French crown, which has been demanding taxes that are not its feudal due and, if you take into consideration other violations of the Treaty of Paris, has arguably forfeited its claim. Up and down the coast, knights and archers stream into the Cinque Ports as the Warden and his officers get to work requisitioning merchant ships.

France meanwhile sends its own army into Normandy, declaring its intent to suppress its unruly vassals and punish them for various violations against their sub-vassals. French knights also launch an expedition into Lombardy, citing a report by inquisitors accusing the German-allied ruler, Captain of the People Matteo Visconti, of offenses including necromancy, heresy, and claiming the title of "Imperial vicar" without papal approval.

The khan of the Golden Horde loses patience with the sheep-stealing Alan tribesmen of Cimmeria and dispatches three tumen south to discipline them. Soon afterwards, however, a breathless messenger rides out of the northwestern steppe to bear word that the khan's faithless Muscovite vassals are once again raiding across the border.

The Republic of Venice dispatches an expeditionary force across the Appenines into Tuscany after several noble families complain about pirates based in its fading and resentful maritime rival Pisa. No sooner do the watchers on the Campanile lose sight of the banners of its knights and condotierri in the Adriatic haze, however, then word reaches them of an imperial army descending from the Alps to pillage their estates.

BATTLES OF THE YEAR 1300

First player issues the challenge, and can choose allies for themselves. To keep things moving quickly, the non-challenging player does not get allies.

Post here when you issue your challenge, so I know which battles have started.

I'll take over the non-player realms, unless a player volunteers to fight for that side (the battles labelled "Nijis, provisional") before the challenge is issued.

Some of you have a fair number of battles to fight. Tentatively we can set the deadline at June 30, though this can be extended if battles are in progress. If players are overloaded and both opponents agree, the battles can be randomly resolved instead of fought out.

Some players prefer tournaments to allow one restart of the match after first seeing the terrain - ie, both sides need to attack across a ravine with a stream, for example. In general I discourage restarts to keep things moving quickly. However, the attacker if facing a truly hopeless set-up can restart the match once, but I add 10 to their rout level when entering the results of the battle, representing the time and supplies lost marching to a new axis of attack. In rare cases this will change the victory to a defeat, but most likely will make defeats more costly and make the victories less impactful (ie, you are less able to exploit it by taking cities, etc). If the re-roll is equally hopeless, the attacker does not need to attack, but a 0-0 standoff will be a waste of the resources spent doing the order. If people don't like how this works out, let me know.

If there's a battle that I missed, or you see an army list that doesn't look right for the time in place, apologies in advance and let me know!

Enjoy!

Got those! Note the terrain re-roll rule. I remembered that it came up in another tournament, and thought of a possible solution that will hopefully allow re-rolls in extreme cases while keeping the matches moving ahead quickly.

My apologies for late response, was out last week, and missed the start of this.

Nijis I accepted your Rostov challenge as Golden Horde and will play it out. Would you mind issuing a challenge for the Cimmeria battle for me as well (No need for allied for me)? I can't seem to issue the challenge for the Alans side since I lack that DLC

anderarcos11 (ghibeline, german allies) beat Indibil (french), 41 to 15.

The French attack on the imperial allies has been unsuccessful. The brave Lombards have managed to assemble a force made up of troops contributed by various Italian cities and defeat the French. After concentrating a force of crossbowmen on the right flank protected by a small forest, they weakened and destroyed the fearsome French cavalry, while the center and left flank gained time thanks to the crossbowmen and pavisiers.

anderarcos 11 (germans) beat Indibidil (french), 42 to 16.

The imperialists managed to support the Flemish revolts against the French and expel them from the territory. The battlefield was a place full of hills and difficult terrain, for which the imperials chose to dismount several of their best knights and lead a force with a large presence of crossbowmen and spearmen from the free cities. The French advanced but were overwhelmed by hails of Imperial arrows and bolts, losing several of their knights. At the end of the battle, the French left flank gave way and the lancers of the free cities began an encircling movement that ended up giving victory.

Well played.

Cuddlefission (Aragonese) defeats anderarcos11 (Ghibelline Italian) in Tuscany, 62 to 50

The local cities massed forces to confront the mercenaries amid hills and fens - poised to whittle their foes down by exchange of bolts as they crossed the mire. However, the quality of the defenders forces was of necessity mixed, and the troops on a hilltop facing open ground were less experienced, and proved unable to cope with the speed and ferocity of the mercenaries, troops hardened by years of conflict on the peninsula and confident in their victory. So while their comrades in the mire, unburdened by shields and armor, fell prey to relentless missile fire and determined resistance in close fighting, the mercenary cavalry thundered across the plain and up the slopes, driving the communal militias before them. Losses to both sides were staggering, but as the victorious Italian infantry wheeled to press across and give battle to their scattered and weary foes, they saw their allies in flight and baggage in immediate jeopardy, forcing them to quit the field to rescue their families and belongings.

A hard fought battle! I suspect the 'victory' of the proxy forces will amount to little, given how rough a state they were in by nightfall.

Aragonese-allied Saharan Atlas (Cuddlefission) defeat Marinids (Nijis - provisional) 61 - 42

The Marinid punitive expedition ends in disaster - treacherous local guides led the Marinid army to a great rock formation where, rather than the ill-defended settlement full of plunder they had been promised, they met with an assembled coalition of not only the particular tribe at issue, but their neighbors, their allies, and foreign mercenaries, all well prepared for battle. The fighting had been fierce, and not in the Sultan's favor. His Christian guards had charged boldly into battle only to be either be cut down by missiles or chase light horsemen fruitlessly into the desert, and his most elite infantry had fought to the last man, confronted by superior numbers, swarmed by horsemen, and separated from the aid of their fellows by rough ground teeming with archers. Rumors swirl about the great sums of gold spent to gather the troops of the victorious coalition - some say it was stolen gold of the Marinids themselves, others the proceeds of raiding and trading elsewhere, but perhaps most worryingly it may have been contributed by perfidious Christian monarchs, intent on frustrating Marinid ambitions and stoking further conflict in the Sahara, far from the battlefields of Iberia...

A fun battle! Slings and arrows of outrageous fortune abounded, and the thing was actually pushed over the edge by a mutual rout of two infantry units.

anderarcos11 (ghibeline, german allies) beat TomoeGozen (Venetians) 66 to 48

The coalition of Tuscan cities once again defended its territory against external aggressions, in this case, from the rival city of Venice, thanks to advice and some imperial officers. The battle was very bloody, with two armies composed mainly of lancers, heavy cavalry and crossbowmen (including pavisiers). The Venetian Guelphs first attacked the Tuscan right flank with their heavy cavalry, which suffered heavy casualties from crossbowmen stationed in a small wood. Subsequently, the Tuscan right flank made up of heavy cavalry advanced while the centor continued to fire arrows at the Venetian army. After a fierce fight, the Venetian heavy cavalry gave way on the Tuscan right flank, which the Tuscan knights took advantage of to envelop the enemy army and wipe out numerous units of badly protected crossbowmen and spearmen. Despite losing the entire center of the formation, the Tuscan flanks held on and through the envelopment maneuver ended up achieving victory.
