Germans (anderarcos11) attack Venetian-ruled Venetia (TomoeGozen)
Local Venetian forces have resisted the attempted Imperial invasion. (63- 42)
It can be no coincidence that the Imperial forces should make a move at the same time Venetian forces deployed to Tuscany to root out the pirates. Obviously the Tuscans are in bed with the Germans , no doubt Imperial money has been funding the Tuscan piracy!

Re: Tides of Conquest Late Medieval campaign, turn 1, 1300 CE
Aragonese (Cuddlefission) defeat French-allied Naples (Indibil), 65-53
As with the mercenary raids further north, the more formal Aragonese campaign in Southern Italy was met with valiant resistance. The knights and infantry of both sides were devastated in a prolonged struggle, until only a few badly battered units remained in action - but of those infantry who remained on the field, the strength lay with the Aragonese, their remaining footmen better acclimated to close fighting than the crossbow heavy Neapolitan formations, and their skirmishers still at liberty to roam and fire on targets of opportunity with what few missiles remained. The surviving knights of both sides having scattered in pursuit of various foes, and only belatedly wheeled to resume the fighting proper, by the time the horsemen of each army could reassert their presence the dismounted battle was all but settled.
Were it only a matter of the gentlemen's battle, the Neapolitan knighthood was in better remaining strength and far superior tactical position, but with only a single surviving company of infantry facing down many times their number armed with only whatever spent bolts they could scavenge from the field, the battle as a whole was hopeless.
An absolute nail-biter of a match, and once again given the casualties I wonder how much progress will really be made from it in the grand scheme.

Hungarian (Lachie_Mac) defeats German (anderarcos10) 41-14
The Hungarians' foray into Austria looked to be stymied as its raiding army faced the combination of a deep stream, rough ground, and a narrow mountain pass through which could accommodate only a fraction of their forces. Unfortunately for the Austrians, however, their heavier spear formations and knights proved less able to navigate the challenging battlefield than the Hungarians' more numerous light foot and mounted archers. Irregulars recruited from the Carpathian provinces proved invaluable as their manoeuvrability and fierce charge routed several more heavily-equipped German formations. Both armies' knights then nobly faced one another on the little open ground which was present, with a contingent of Teutonic brothers in Hungarian employ putting their Imperial brethren to flight, and with them, the rest of the German army.
Unexpected though the victory had been, the Hungarians ravaged the Duchy mercilessly, with these spoils of war soothing their king's concern at the likely failure of his ongoing campaign in Serbia.

English intervene (wzfcns) defeated French allies in Normandy (Indibil),48-22
Under the call of the barons in Normandy, the bravest and most loyal English knights rallied together, led by Sir Pier Hudelston, and crossed the Channel to expel the occupying French forces. This army consisted of 1,200 cavalry, 2,500 infantry, and some local militia. The archers of both armies engaged in fierce shooting from a hill in the center of the battlefield. The formidable firepower of the French crossbowmen, numbering 1,000, made it difficult for the English forces to withstand, but they lacked the courage to launch a proactive attack. On the plains on both sides, the knights of both sides engaged in a fierce battle. On the left flank, the French knights' charge made it difficult for the English forces to defend, but the forest behind the English lines hindered the French advance, allowing Sir Aymer to successfully hold off the French with inferior forces. On the right flank, the cavalry charge led by Sir Pier Hudelston himself crushed the French forces, and the brave English knights completely routed the enemy, establishing the final victory.
The English knights held a grand feast to celebrate their victory, eagerly awaiting news of victory from their allied forces on the other side.

Normandy (wzfcns) defeat French (Indibil) intervene 52-21
The leader of the Normandy army, Jehan de Laval, found an excellent defensive position. A deep ravine separated the French army from them. Norman crossbowmen unleashed a rain of arrows upon the enemy from a hill in the center of the battlefield, making it impossible for the French knights to pose a threat to them. Some brave French knights charged across the creek and launched an assault on the narrow plains on either side of the hill, with some even successfully breaking through the rear of the Norman lines. However, the Norman army deployed 800 cavalry troops behind their position, and they counterattacked from right to left, crushing the French assault.

English-allied Norway (wzfcns) defeat Swedish (doyley50) 56-27.
A force of 5,000 strong Norwegian soldiers, mostly infantry, assembled to counter the Swedish invasion. The Norwegian army, slightly quicker than the Swedish forces, managed to seize the high ground, positioning their flanks protected by the lake. A Nordic-style shield wall battle ensued. Svend, accompanied by several hundred Huscarls, wielding large axes, charged into the midst of the Swedish troops, cutting down their foes and pursuing them across a small stream, eventually reaching the top of the opposite hill. The cunning Swedes dispatched two flanking forces to encircle the Norwegian army positioned on the high ground, attacking from three directions. Just as the Swedes were about to charge to the top of the high ground, the few Norwegian heavy cavalry arrived in time to hold their position. The Norwegian army pursued relentlessly until the Swedes fled into the marshlands, at which point they ceased their pursuit.

Nijis, Rus/Muscovy, beat kongxinga (Tartar/Golden Horde) 13-54
Muscovites (Nijis, provisional) try to liberate Golden Horde-ruled Rostov (Kongxinga) - CHALLENGE SENT
Map: Northern European Agricultural
Side 1: Rus (1265CE to 1379CE) Medieval
Side 2: Tatars (1242CE to 1399CE) Medieval
The horde were not expecting quite that many Rus Horse archers, and were quickly swept away. Some difficult terrain made things a lot worse for the noble and valiant Horde warriors. .
Even the supposedly harmless armoured spears of the Russians were enough to smash the horde Caucasian archers. Due to poor performance, their contract is currently under review.

Oof. Alan lancers screened by their horse archers easily closed the distance and smashed the horde center. While the horde did better on their left flank, the horde right flank was shot down by archers in rough terrain. The Horde raiders bring back nothing but wounded in this raid.

Nijis (Serbian) defeats LachieMac (Hungarian) 38-62 (I assume this is final rout percentage, not the "final losses" screen)
Despite considering Serbia an easier target than mountainous and well-organised Austria, the Hungarian king's southern raid went unexpectedly poorly.
Approaching a patchwork battlefield, his army's flanks lagged behind as its formations of massed bowmen were loath to advance into open ground. Meanwhile, its centre pushed forward to attempt to catch the more numerous Serbs from above as they marched up a low bluff. The disjointed advance, coupled with the flanking efforts of the Serbian cavalry, equipped with lance and bow in Byzantine style, easily broke the Hungarian army before its unmatchable knights could deliver a decisive blow.
Sent back behind the Danube with his tail between his legs, the Hungarian king was left wondering whether a better-planned raid might have convinced the unaligned Balkan states to support his cause.

Re: Tides of Conquest Late Medieval campaign, turn 1, 1300 CE
How are the battles going? I think there is only one left to solve, right?
Re: Tides of Conquest Late Medieval campaign, turn 1, 1300 CE
I think just the one in Andaluz.
For next turn, LuciusSulla will be joining as the East Romans. SnuggleBunnies has also volunteered to fight some of the AI nation battles, so you'll get more variety in adversaries. Welcome aboard!

Andaluz battle is complete, decisive Castilian victory (41-5). I was waiting to let the victor post, but if it's actually the last I might as well get the score up. I'll leave the tale to them, though!
Re: Tides of Conquest Late Medieval campaign, turn 1, 1300 CE
Great! I'll process the turn.
This will take a day or so.
To be posted:
1) The world map after the battles
2) Brief descriptions of the outcomes
3) An updated and more detailed description of how orders and results work, for those interested
4) A link to the next turn

And here is the map...
England, Castile and Hungary all expanded their spheres of influence with their victories. The Empire conquered Flanders but lost some ground in Italy.
Here is the link to the next turn. I went over results pretty carefully but if by any chance I entered some incorrectly, let me know and I can resolve the turn again.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/d7dkqd3sr2iqu ... 0.xml?dl=0
This turn is also named "fogsavexml_0.xml". If you have another file that you don't want to replace, you can rename it with any other number (ie, fogsavexml_2.xml) and still open it.
Here is a more detailed descriptions of orders and an example of how battle effects are calculated, based on some questions asked by anderarcos.

Re: Tides of Conquest Late Medieval campaign, turn 1, 1300 CE
The princes of the western Mediterranean rush to realign themselves following the Castilians' victory over Granada. The Nasirid emir himself agrees to pay indemnities and supply troops to Castile in wartime, while Portugal and Qusantina grant privileges to Castilian merchants as a show of goodwill. In North Africa, meanwhile, a Marinid bid to expand was blunted by the Aragon-aligned tribes of the western Sahara.
In the north, English armies and their allies defeat France's forces in Normandy. A nervous Scotland breaks its Auld Alliance with France, offering a princess in marriage to the English heir, and even as far south as Rome, a group of noble families begin to agitate against France's influence over the papacy. A Swedish expedition into Norway was halted in a battle in the marshes amid the lakes and marshes of the Vestfold.
In central Europe, the Empire's armies roll into the Low Countries, vanquish their French-aligned opponents, and declare that the County of Flanders is now an imperial Elector. German garrisons however are stationed in Flemish towns to make sure that it's clear that this not a partnership of equals. On the other end of the Empire, however, a Hungarian raid into Austria has shaken the Emperor's authority, as the King of Bohemia in a surprise move announces his support for a member of the Hungarian royal family as bishop of Prague.
The situation in Italy has become even more complicated than it already was, with a four-way contest for hegemony between the Empire, France, Venice and Aragon turning into a six-way struggle involving English-allied and Hungarian-allied factions. Aragon's pursuit of the War of the Sicilian Vespers against France and its feud with the imperial-allied Ghibellines netted it small victories in Naples and Tuscany, but its losses were heavy and the diplomatic fall-out minimal. A cousin of the Angevin king of Naples topples the ruler and seizes control with imperial backing. A pro-English faction arises in Rome to challenge the French-backed pope, while the Guelph cities of Tuscany, who have traditionally relied on papal support, have opened up a correspondence with the king of Hungary, whose victories against their ancient adversary the Emperor have piqued their interest.
The small rump of the once-great Roman empire is experiencing a minor resurgence, as successes in proxy wars with the Ottomans and Hungarians have prompted a renewal of its longstanding ties with the kingdom of Bulgaria. Meanwhile, the rival beyliks of southern Anatolia in Pisidia and Isauria square off, with the former choosing Constantinople and the latter the Ottomans as patrons.
In Russia, a Muscovite army has managed to wrest the principality of Rostov from the Golden Horde. Moscow's rise has not gone unnoticed by its neighbors, however, with the imperial-allied Teutonic knights in Livonia and Estonia announcing their intention to launch a crusade as soon as the summer sun dries up the mud of the rasputitsa.
The Horde is meanwhile dealing with the traditional difficulties of running a steppe empire, as several tribal confederations in the less populated steppeland in the center of their empire assert their independent while still remaining vassals of the khan. Several Alan tribes meanwhile respond to a Horde invasion by packing up their tents and preparing a migration, although their destination is so far unclear.
