Dear Slitherine team,
Do you plan to expand Legion II into the late Roman period(Constantine,Justinian ..) with a future add-on?
I guess it would be nice to command field armies from that period with the Arena engine.
I know we had that issue on the old forum back then, but I still would like to hear some more opinions about it from everybody on the forum.
Greetings,
Aurelian

It would be nice to be able to destroy the eastern roman empire!

Dear Efthimios,
Tell me why you are so eager to destroy the eastern roman empire? It sounds somewhat anachronistic to me since you are from Greece!!!:?
Greetings,
Aurelian

Hey, I would love to see a new game/Spartan mod covering the Late Byzantine Empire, as Miki has noted. But the thing about Spartan is that' s too city-biased and The Roman Empire would be just a bunch of cities with no conexion...but the Grand Campaign map has it all!!!! Epirus, the Latin Duchy in Athens, Tesalonica, Morea and a bit of the Rum Seljuks. That would be great!!!! But, is it possible to mod Spartan that way? Anyone willing to do the mod? I'm excited!!!!

Aurelian I will keep this very short because it is off topic.
To answer your question,
I see the eastern roman empire as that, if "you" want to call it byzantine empire, I don't care, it is the same thing to me. A hostile thing to all that hellenism stands for, an enemy of our way of life, of our religion and of our culture in general. Though most greeks do not share my beliefs, I do not blame them, they had the last couple of centuries of brainwashing to make them believe that the ERE was good and all its parts were for the good of the greeks.
I end this here so that I do not push the good people at Slitherine too much and lock this thread for being off topic.

Being a freak of Late Roman Empire (or Byzantine Empire or whatever you wish to call, it does not matter to me

), I'm interested in your point of view, Efthimios. Tell us more (even in the Off-topic)!! If things get hot you can always put the blame on me
And in the future mod I have forseen, you can always trash the byzantines with your mighty turkish/latin/Bulgarian/whatever armies, if you want. I have great pleasure defeating Castille & Leon with Navarre in EU2.
Bye

I would be very interested in any such mod, though I would prefer a what if scenario where things are very different, say greeks have kicked the byzantine dogs off or something.

Being against the ERE does not mean I am in favour of the others of the region
In EU2 I usualy have at least hostile relations with the byzantines

I won't even tell you what I do to them in Medieval Total War.
I do not think it is a wise for me to start talking, even in off topic, for this matter cause I get very emotional over it, and I doubt I would be able to hold my mouth shut and not say very nasty things, that I am sure Slitherine does not want its forums to have such a nasty thread.
If you want to talk about this in some other way (PM, IM, etc) then sure I have no problem.

A game based on the Byzantines (or substitute favorite name here) would force me to pry blinking presidents from my wallet. The number of oppoents they faced from say 400AD to 1400AD was amazing. It would be a good bridge between the traditional Roman Empire and the Middle Ages if one were so inclined. Justinians Reconquest, Heraclius, so much material to choose from!

I'll reinstall Spartan+Gates tonight or tomorrow morning and see what can be done with the files. Things like "Are cities' names moddable? Units names? Units statistics?" are unknown to me (hey, vanilla Spartan was alright with me). If there is an easy way to change them I will start to make comparisons with my Byzantine period maps to see what can be done and I'll post something in the Spartan forum, to start recruiting volunteers

. 1240 or around will be a great starting point.
Any help will be welcome

.
Bye, I won't go off-topic (in this post

) anymore...

Couldn't agree more. The Roman Republic and the age of the Triumvirs has been done to death, but there has been very little done in the way of operational or grand strategy games on the middle and later Empire. There are plenty of fascinating campaigns from this period that are crying out for a game: Trajan's Dacian and Parthian Wars, Marcus Aurelius' Macromanic Wars, Zenobia and the Crisis of the Third Century, the Gothic storm, and Atilla's invasion to name a few. Although Creative Assembly did a credible job with the Rome Total War Barbarian Invasions expansion, at the end of the day it left a lot to be desired. There was basically only one standard scenario (starting right after the death of Emperor Julian), and it seems when playing as the Romans once you beat off the barbarian invasions the game plays just like the original Rome Total War (conquer a set number of provinces in a certain number of turns). Anyway, needless to say, an operational level or grand strategy scenario-based game of the middle and late empire is high on my wish list.

I would like to see this. Although, no matter what periods are covered, I will just be happy once Legion II finally arrives. I've been waiting for this game for an eternity it feels like. And I can tell you, when it is finally announced, I will be among the very first to pre-order the collector's edition. B)
Personally, I think the Crisis of the 3rd Century would be an exciting period to cover, especially the time of the Three Empires.
Early Roman history would be good, too. There's plenty of games about the high republic, but nothing really about the monarchy or the early republic. There were some exciting conflicts in the days of the monarchy, especially under Tullus Hostilius and Servius Tullius. Camillus' wars would be exciting (Brennus, anyone?), as would the Samnite Wars. And none of these periods have been done justice in the video game world. I'd pay good money for a game that brought me that experience.

Of course I picked up AEGOD's Alea Jackta Est as soon as it was released. With the current scenario list stretching from 100BC to 200AD and more promised (including Trajan's Dacian Wars and the Crises of the Third Century AD), it appeared to be just the game I was looking for. The trouble is, it is big, complex, and hard, even at low difficulty settings. I've had some stability issues with it as well, even though I have a medium-to-high end gaming rig. Anyway, AJE may yet become the Roman operational/grand strategic game I was waiting for, but it is definitely going to take a lot more time on my part to get my arms around it. It is not a game for the middle-of-the-road Rome Total War crowd.
Dith, thanks for bringing Legion II to my attention. I will definitely keep an eye on it. I did play the Spartan game (which I'm assuming is the same basic game engine) and mostly liked it. In fact Spartan is one of those games like PanzerCorps that I keep meaning to revisit.

This idea sounds wonderful. Imperium Romanum on a computer! Is it ever going to happen?
