At the moment I'm reading S.R.Gardiner's The Thirty Years' War, 1618 - 1648. Although dated, it's a good read that's providing me with a general framework for the TYW battles/armies in the game. I downloaded the free Kindle version from Amazon, but it's also available as a free online text, e.g. via this link -
http://www.gutenberg.org/files/40082/40 ... 0082-h.htm
Reading this has been fun as it's one of the books I studied for A Level History, back in the Dark Ages (circa 1975)!!!
Cheers,

@Stockwellpete that pdf is a great little primer on the period.
Just finished reading
Furies: War in Europe, 1450-1700 by Lauro Martines. Not free but it is an interesting read. Discusses logistics, sieges, camp followers, disease, violence, and the socioeconomic impacts of warfare in Early Modern Europe. A nice change from the great men, tactics, and battles approach. It really brings home the cruelties of European warfare during the 15th-Early 18th centuries.
Here's what the blog
Sellswords, mercenaries and condottieri had to say about this book:

Do you think a 'stickie' should be applied to this thread?
Looks a good reference post.

Sadly that appears to be a copyright breach rather than a legitimate free web resource.
