So I just lost 20 Space Marines

In a single turn to 3 ork squads.
Let me first say I've never played table top so maybe this is a good representation of the table top combat. I have read just a ton of the 40k Books and I must say I was pretty disappointed by Space Marines when I finally got them. AFter reading the books I expected Durable badasses instead they are more slightly upgraded imperial guards. I lost 2 squads now one of those was left in the open but man 100 some Orks being able to completely wipe out 20 Space Marines with only a couple losses seems pretty much the opposite of everything I've read. At the rate this battle is going I’m going to lose prolly a 100 plus Space Marines in a single battle. Which lore wise is 10% of a chapter and generally devastating?
So yea maybe its just me but I gotta say Space Marines are rather underwelming
I'd expect them to be alot more durable and able to deal damage out to infantry.

The books are a poor portreyal of how the SM work, they overhype them to ridiculous levels. Don't relay on them.

Yeah, what bob says is true. The books don't match how it works on TT, with the TT version being nerfed a lot in comparison (at least that was the case when i played TT in the 90's).

The Orks of the scenarios are super equipped, with lots of armor and big Mega Nobz.
It is no wonder that Titans are sometimes required to wipe them out.
So you will need the best Space Marines armor (the best Dreadnoughts) and the heaviest of their vehicles.
Although even the heaviest SMs are not Titans.
I don't know how to win this with space marines only, but I believe it would be nice to try again the scenarios with that in mind; this requires to be on Normal difficulty I think.

Didn't play TT too, but I liked how they made space marines in dow2. Like, you had a "squad" of 3 tactical marines and they were pretty much the equal of 2 "squads" of 5 shoota boyz without big shootas, and cost pretty much the same too, having like the same damage as one squad of shootas but much more hp and armor. So with equal cover they usually could kill like 4 shootas before retreating to get some medical attention while taking no losses themselves. Tactical marines could also go into melee, potentially killing all the shootas without loses if the shootas didn't retreat.
Ofc in here they would have to have the same armor as leman russ to get the same effect i imagine, which is hardly feasible. Also, in TT i believe they come in squads of 10, same as the armageddon?

Double that. Space Marines ARE elite infantry with good armor and weapons; that doesn't make them invulnerable or anything like that. Plus, that you LOST 20 of them doesn't mean they are DEAD; they may be just wounded and in need of medical attention.
Also - I don't know exact scale of Armageddon, but it may be that one hitpoint represents one squad, not one person. In that case, you lost 20 Space Marines to fire of 3x20x10 = 600 orks. Not exactly different from books and alike.

Yea Im working under the assumption the number = how many units are in that squad. So that could be wrong and 20 getting wiped out by 600 wouldn't be outrageous except for the fact the Space Marines didn't even manage to kill 20 orks if using this thinking. I’d have to hope they’d take one guy with them.
. Though by what the others are saying in the Table Top they aren't as strong and they are fighting elite orks. So I guess it's not so bad, though would still expect more damage being dealt before getting wiped out.

I understand your point but I never encountered a game (PC or TT) where Space Marines are like in the books or stories.
Maybe Space Marine 40K FPS where you kill hundreds but never die. Loading a save game isn't dying, isn't it?
But I like the possibilities of W40k:A to edit the units. So feel free to build your real Space Marines.
