The case for increased core slot costs

No, I'm not arguing that the player should have fewer units to play with; the core slot system is a major improvement on the rather simple system used in PzC1, but the low cost of units, especially at the lower end of the scale, produce some unfortunate results.

For example, consider the T-34/40 -- it's a fantastic tank in every way, and certainly a unit you'd consider including in your force should you capture a few. The T-34/41 on the other hand is terrible by comparison, because while it does offer a tiny improvement over the T-34/40 it does so at the cost of an additional core slot -- they cost 4 and 5 slots (3 and 4 with Panzer General) respectively -- and so there is little reason to ever as much as consider fielding this tank. Breakpoints are always going to provide cases where some units are more optimal, but cases such as this are quite extreme, and the problem could be alleviated by increasing the costs across the board while also increasing the # of slots the player has to work with, thus allowing for a wider spectrum of costs. Alternatively the same result could be achieved by allowing non-integers, but that seems rather messy.

I do agree that more granularity in core slot costs would help the game out a lot. It'd also get rid of the free overstrengths for core slot points like 2(one of the reasons the 110 and pz1 are so good in the beginning).

Indeed. A similar problem exists with Infantry and Panzer General, where the drop in core slot costs allow you to effectively overstrengthen for free, e.g., the IIC is reduced to 2 slots by Panzer General and can be overstrenghtened to 11 for prestige only.
