AK : Bug in Caucasus ?

Post by levince55 »

Hi

I can't move my gebirsjagers in high mountains hexes in the Caucasus scenario (Afrika Korps). OKH wants me to seize them. Any idea ?

Are your gebirsjagers equipped with any transport which cannot move in mountain terrain?

Could you please post a screenshot illustrating the problem?

keep in mind that just not "on foot" matters, they must have no transport attached to the unit as an upgrade. E.G., even if they can walk three hexes, they can't do that in high mountains if they are motor equipped otherwise. Yes, it's a bit weird but that's how it works. Right-click on the unit (or if in deployment phase, alt-left click) and make sure there is now truck or half-track shown to the right of the unit in the lower panels.

What is so weird about it? Even if the transport is not carrying the unit, it still must move together with it, and so terrain must allow it.

Units should be able to dump their transports where they are. No doubt many units left their transports behind and continued on foot when conditions or fuel problems made it necessary. Whole armies did it on mass when retreating from places like Dunkirk and Moscow. Not being able to move troops into dense forest or mountain has ruined many a strategy for me in the past, i know better now but dislike the restriction. A hot key for disbanding transports seems reasonable but will it see the light of day ?

It might. At least, I have no objection whatsoever to adding this. We even have a button for this lying in UI/unitinfo folder (panzerbutton_mbutton11_*.png files). :)

How about a transport pool? In Dynasty General you had air mobile units like light infantry, special forces, commandos etc. . Usually they were on foot but you could use your air points pool to call transport helicopters on spot and have them transported to an other hex in this turn.
There could be something similar in PC. A pool from which you can, let say call a bunch of Opel Blitz trucks, have your unit pick up for a single turn and dropped off the next. If the unit saw no combat/ losses during transportation then the points used will be return to the pool to 100% (1 point per unit strength. You could even add here a partisan activity modifier. For example like 20% partisan activity means only 80% of points get returned to the pool). If there was losses indeed you would subtract accordingly the points return to the pool (to symbolize the lost trucks).

Yes, transport pool might happen too. By this I mean that discarded transport would get to a pool of available equipment, and then you would be able to "upgrade" a unit to use this transport again for free. But picking up random units on the field with Opel trucks is unlikely to happen. There are many scenarios where towed guns are supposed to remain where they are, not get transported to a different place en masse.

If that is not a difficult programming solution, that would be awesome.
