Storm Over Europe: Redux

Storm Over Europe: Redux is the spiritual successor to Storm Over Europe, originally developed by Ezequiel Romanko and Rick Kessler. Recently, it has been agreed upon that I will be taking over all updates of Storm Over Europe. I will continue updating this thread with updated screenshots and progress. Rick Kessler will continue providing support for ideas, scenarios, and images.

Redux offers updated features like Random Hero at the beginning of most scenarios, updated objectives, refined and expanded maps, along with new scenarios not originally found in Axis Operations and Storm Over Europe. A major change is that most friendly forces are controlled by the player. There is very limited AI control, except in missions which would alter the overall balance of the scenario.

Redux kicks off in the Spanish Civil War, which has a grand total of 31 scenarios overall; 25 of the missions are required to progress, with 6 optional missions. Most optional missions have been updated and designed to offer a different rewards and playstyle than before.

The second campaign will feature the Invasion of Poland, along with several reworked and new scenarios offering new challenges and better player control. 1939 Redux/Rework is currently in further development and is almost done. It will be released to alpha testers shortly afterwards.

The third campaign, 1940 Part 1, will feature heavily redone scenarios and updated path branches. Currently, 1940 part
1 has preferred branches with better rewards and heroes. This will be corrected in 1940 part 1 Redux/Rework.

1940 Part 1 will feature a full Battle of France campaign, concluding with the Italian offensives. 1940 Part 2 will be the Battle of Britain, which will offer a mix of air-only missions and probing attacks at the British coastal facilities. If all goes well, the full-scale invasion of the British Home Islands, Operation Sea Lion, will commence. If not, there is an option to attempt to bring Nationalist Spain into the Axis fold.

Currently, Redux only features Condor Legion campaign and 1939. Part 1 of 1940 is currently undergoing beta testing.

This looks exciting. New campaign content is always highly anticipated. I haven’t been following SOE too close figuring you’re working on it and it will come out when it’s ready. Is this in addition to, or does it take the place of the the SOE that currently runs through 1940 part 1?

Long story.

Originally this was a simple rework (before December 2023), incorporating new unit mod, slight tweaks to most scenarios and a few new ones. However, when I left the team due to creative differences, the project stagnated.

Redux was going to be be a different campaign however, it will be SOE itself.

I should be finished with 1939 work this week, then onward to 1940 part 1 fixes and changes. Then 1940 part 2 work will resume.

I have already shared a few update screenshots on a reworked 1939. I have a lot more information.

1939 will have a total of 31 scenarios (similar to a reworked SCW). There is no branch between Lwow and Modlin, the later having been reworked into hopefully a better scenario. The reasoning behind this is to eliminate the choice of getting Lwow (and alternative objective) which granted a lot of prestige and Soviet equipment.

This Soviet equipment included early models of T34 and KV1s, which have been eliminated throughout the campaign. This is a type of power creep which made it difficult to balance around and created a preferred path choice. The Soviets will still provide equipment as a thankful gift, but it won't be anything near as powerful as before.

The Finnish tokens from Winter War have been converted into 3,000 prestige bonuses, a total of 33,000 prestige is available for completing all special objectives.

There is a new scenario, Departure on April 8th, 1940, which allows players to spend prestige on equipment and a powerful choice for the upcoming 1940 campaign. This choice unlocks 2 specialized infantry units, Paratroopers, Mountain or Marine infantry, all with max experience rating and a hero. This is a costly option, requiring 20,000 prestige.

Hope to see you on the battlefields soon!

To clarify, Is SoE Redux a "new" mod to subscribe to in Steam or an override and replacement for the current SoE I am subscribed to? I want to make sure I don't miss it if it is a stand-alone product. Thanks!

It will replace the current SOE.

It will be required to replay the campaign as events, rewards, and heroes have drastically changed.

The work on 1940 has been in progress for a little bit. Currently there is a plan for 31 scenarios to be available, similar to the Condor Legion campaign and 1939. The exciting news is, several of the scenarios were originally going to be the part of the planned 1940 Part 2.

At this time, 1940 Part 2, will be the Battle of Britain and possible invasion of the Home Islands. Otherwise, there will be missions down in Spain, Portugal, and Malta.

It is currently planned the later parts of 1940 part 1 will end with assisting the Italians to secure their objectives against the French.

Antwerp and Brussels, work in progress. A brand new scenario in 1940.

In other news, The Condor Legion Rework is complete. The alpha testers are in the later stages of 1939. I still plan on releasing both campaigns shortly after the Fall of Poland DLC is available.

This sounds amazing. So much content! It sounds like there will be options to do cool things beyond historical in the West.

Thank you for the update.

This is the plan and yw.

I updated today's post with a picture of Antwerp and Brussels, a work in progress scenario.

After 1940 part 2, still kind of debating where the progression will go. It may truly get alternative as invasion of the Soviet Union has been done 1,000 times.

Interesting concept. That takes me back my old World in Flames days when you could decide to continue through France and Spain and take Gibraltar and reinforce DAK to strangle Britain economically before SeaLion.

Soviets could wait until 1942, but they were always much, much tougher then.

That kind of option would really change the game - the ultimate in campaign choices. SeaLion in 40 or 41? Soviet Union in 41 or 42?

Oh the possibilities.

Hello all,

Thought I'd just share a brief update about the campaigns. Mostly just the names, partially inspired by Hearts of Iron, and their descriptions.

Hope you enjoy and hope to see you on the battlefields soon!

Very ambitious. 30ish scenarios each. My compliments on your efforts - the amount of work you’re putting in is astounding. And appreciated.

So you already have about 90 heroes before starting Sealion? Is there some kind of balancing, like Grondels Hero Scripts or just vanilla rules?
Last time I played Storm Over Europe there already were too many scenarios, which results in massive balancing problems.

I will definitively give it a try soon.

There is a balancing act. It will definitely take place sooner rather than later. I'm not a huge fan of super heroes, like Galland is a necessary hero with little drawbacks.

The heroes I will create for events will usually have 1 S tier, then 2 other tiers of traits at a pretty high cost.

There is a possibility that heroes may die or retire more like Morato does.

The first battle in 1940 part 2 was going to be the Battle of Abbeville. This battle is still included in the 1940 part 1 rework, it should be a much more difficult battle than seen in the DLCs.

Image
The Battle of Abbeville.

In this battle, it is a lot narrower of a scenario in sense of terrain. It is meant to be an exhausting battle that makes way for the second scenario immediately following it: Weygand Line.

Weygand Line is a massive scenario (50x50), which is close to my preferred map size. What remains of the British Expeditionary Force on the continent and the renewed French Army, has made defensive positions just south of the Somme. It is your job to breach the line and investigate Paris.

Image
Weygand Line.

The last screenshot is a work in progress, your forces are proceeding after the fall of the Maginot Line.

Image
Troyes (in the north) is the starting point of this map.

I do have an update on some other changes.

I have went ahead and reworked all the heroes in SCW and 1939, removing prestige generating traits like Famous, Legendary, etc. At the same time, I nerfed Galland by removing Double Attack from him.

I also implemented another 5% experience gain nerf - default rate was 20% in 1939/1940, this has been nerfed to 15% which matches the Condor Legion campaign. In training scenarios, experience was nerfed from 50% gain to 30% gain.

In other news, Condor Legion and 1939 are in release candidate stages, just waiting on new models from the Fall of Poland DLC.

Hope to see you on the battlefields soon!
