I know I am late to this game, I searched this forum and could not find the answer.
For example: I made three different units using the same asset model renaming them to swordsmen1, swordsmen2, swordsmen3.
All three have different textures in the same folder.
In skirmish they show up as intended but in the editor and in a Historical battle they default to the "original" texture for the asset file: swordsman.
Is there a way to make them show up correctly in the editor and historical battles?
I imagine I will have to just spread the textures out to different faction folders - is that the only way?
Additional question: If I go the different faction folder route - the units will no longer have the correct texture in skirmish mode, correct?
Thank you!

Re: textures/skins - cloned asset file
As I see you should copy your texture files to C:\Users\(Your User's name)\Documents\My Games\PSCAMP\CAMPAIGNS\(Your Module name)\Data\Battle\UnitTextures\. In this case the game will take your unit textures from ...\Data\Battle\UnitTextures\ for historical battles by default and from ...\Data\Battle\UnitTextures\(Your Skin folder in the ArmyList.txt)\ for skirmish battles.
Or, as an option, create a folder with a unique name for your textures in ...\Data\Battle\UnitTextures\ and assign them from that folder to your units in the editor for historical battles.

Thanks for the reply Cronos!
PSCAMP\CAMPAIGNS\(Your Module name)\Data\Battle\UnitTextures\ <----this is how I did it
I had 2 different texture folders one for the "Castleton" and one for the "Scottish_Castleton". I like the coronelía (spelling?) formation because of the shields.
I have four unique units using the S4F files: coronelia, coronelia1, coronelia2, coronelia3 with dds labeled coronelia@, coronelia1@, coronelia2@, coronelia3@ all in the English texture file.
In skirmish mode I can select the units and when the map loads all four have unique textures.
In the map editor I can select the "Castleton" texture file and it will default to the first "coronelia@" texture because I believe that is what the "s4f" file refers to in the editor. When I run the "historical scenario" I created it sticks with the default original textures referenced by the s4f file so all four units have the coronelia@ texture.
Is there a way around it so it will work in both skirmish, editor and campaign modes?

Re: textures/skins - cloned asset file
I reread your response so maybe I need two different campaign folders one for historical and one for skirmish. In the Skirmish one, I leave everything as is.
For Campaign/Historical I create or use different folders for each set and assign via editor.
Example a folder "textures1" , "textures2", "textures3" each folder would have the multiples of the .dds I am using.
So "textures1" folder would have swordsmen1@, coronelia1@, archer1@ ect?

Re: textures/skins - cloned asset file
You can use it as an option. But nothing prevents you from adding all textures to one campaign folder:
for skirmish battles - your textures are in PSCAMP\CAMPAIGNS\(the same Module name)\Data\Battle\UnitTextures\ECW_Royalist (ECW_Royalist should be specified in ArmyList.txt - in your SKIN line)
for historical battles - the copies of your textures are in PSCAMP\CAMPAIGNS\(the same Module name)\Data\Battle\UnitTextures\ or try to assign the textures in the editor directly from PSCAMP\CAMPAIGNS\(the same Module name)\Data\Battle\UnitTextures\ECW_Royalist. For the detailed info, please, see the manual p. 20.2.2.
