Future of Field of Glory: Empires - an appeal
While searching if there are plans to release an eventual new DLC for Field of Glory: Empires in the future, I came across this discussion thread on Steam: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1011390/ ... 398614142/
It's awesome to see that you're designing a new game, but I'm humbling appealing to you to not leave this game without at least a 2nd DLC focusing on the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. Basically, integration the time periods for which you already have assets in terms of units with FoG2: Wolves at the Gate.
It's one of the most underrated and misrepresented historical periods in the gaming industry, and yet it's one of the most fascinating ones.
I think that it would be a pity, given the existence already of «Wolves at the Gate», to let pass such an opportunity, even more when FoG:Empires suits that period so well - just some more mechanics concerning perhaps religion and migrations, perhaps, and a review of the buildings. Anyway, just my 2cents and a humble call.
Cheers, take care.

Seconded to the nth degree. I am actually dismayed to hear they're designing a new a game -- I love this one and I was hoping for more excellent campaigns like Rise of Persia. It's such a novel setting and I was looking forward to playing as the Heraclian Byzantine Empire or some such underplayed era. Or perhaps even an Assyrian campaign!
A shame to hear they're diverting resources away from this game.

Where have you read and heard that focus is on another game? (May add that I agree that it would be great with a Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages DLC, á la Great Invasions from AGEOD but within FoGE.)antiochosvii wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 4:18 am Seconded to the nth degree. Re: Future of Field of Glory: Empires - an appeal
Think it's worth giving AGEOD the benefit of the doubt here; they've doubtless already carefully considered the feasibility of additional DLCs versus new games, and they know the costs and benefits better than we do since they're the ones actually making them. Plus, we don't know what this supposed new game is going to be about yet. Perhaps it'll be the Early Middle Ages game you're hoping for (and which I myself would love to see). The Late Antiquity/Early Middle Ages period has enough new dynamics in play (large-scale migrations of population groups, the creation of new ethnic identities, the rise of feudalism, Christianity and Islam) that I think it could easily justify its own game. On the other hand, it would also add some new design difficulties, like having to start the game with the map already mostly occupied by three giant blobs (WRE, ERE, Sassanids) if you decided to start the campaign before the fall of the WRE, and then the southern half of the map being entirely reshaped by the expansion of the caliphates halfway through, assuming you wanted to model that (and it's hard to imagine an Early Middle Ages game without it). There's a lot to think about, is what I'm getting at. Whatever they decide to do next, I'm excited for it, I think these basic mechanics could be turned towards a lot of time periods.
(I'm also leery of begging for additional DLCs because I don't want to see this game turn into an endless DLC factory. Been there, done that, bought the £200 T-shirt.

I agree that it's a time period with enough stuff going on to deserve its own game, yes. Also, got what you mean about the «DLC factories»Scobie wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 1:15 pm Think it's worth giving AGEOD the benefit of the doubt here; they've doubtless already carefully considered the feasibility of additional DLCs versus new games, and they know the costs and benefits better than we do since they're the ones actually making them. It's stated in the link I provided above, in a Steam discussion topic. Nice to find fellow supporters of a DLC (or a game... who knows, that new game??...) based on the Late Antiquity/Migration Era/Early Medieval Periodkronenblatt wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 8:53 am_TotalWar_ wrote: ↑Sun Aug 02, 2020 3:09 pm While searching if there are plans to release an eventual new DLC for Field of Glory: Empires in the future, I came across this discussion thread on Steam: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1011390/ ... 398614142/

Re: Future of Field of Glory: Empires - an appeal
OK, I see. Well, too bad, but there needs to be economics in game development and if neither the FoGE base game nor the RoP DLC sold well enough, it's not likely that a second DLC will sell sufficiently either. So we just have to mod FoGE ourselves..._TotalWar_ wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 3:54 pmIt's stated in the link I provided above, in a Steam discussion topic. Re: Future of Field of Glory: Empires - an appeal
I played PON MP in what might well of been the first one. There were a well clued-up number of players who made script changes - notifying Phil? - as problems happened. These were "sorted" and game went on. Can't remember game No. etc, as memory does not age well

Re: Future of Field of Glory: Empires - an appeal
I believe one of the devs discussed the possibility of an Alexander the Great DLC on this forum and explained why they're not doing one. Alexander would have to be modelled as such a powerful, unbalanced individual that in a grand strategy game it probably wouldn't be much fun to play as or against him. He's more suited to a pure wargame dedicated to playing through his campaigns in detail. That's why the base campaign starts shortly after his death and the DLC campaign ends a bit before his ascension.
Re: Future of Field of Glory: Empires - an appeal
well, the same can be said about the quickly persian ascension and fall of babylon in the Dlc, but its true that it would be a very short campaign even counting philips II rule as start, well i hope someone can mod a macedonian campaign XDScobie wrote: ↑Sat Aug 08, 2020 7:23 pmI believe one of the devs discussed the possibility of an Alexander the Great DLC on this forum and explained why they're not doing one. Nowhere did I read that AGEOD was dropping the game. I'm sure AGEOD knows they found a gem in FOG:E, and that a few patches and goodies are eventually on the way.

Notably the first answer by PocusFR (developer). Now, it is not outright "dropping the game", but the phrasing for me is quite clear. There are more patches coming (at least one), but as for DLCs, nobody knows. As well as nobody knows what the new game in development will be about, after all

Re: Future of Field of Glory: Empires - an appeal
To be fair, aside of a Rise of Alexander DLC (which will not happen because AGEOD had tried simulating Alexander and it severely unbalanced the game) and a Rise of Rome DLC, there are not much DLCs that would realistically offer an experience different that we have now._TotalWar_ wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2020 1:31 pmAgain, here's the link I mentioned in the OP: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1011390/ ... 398614142/WingedIncubus wrote: ↑Sun Aug 09, 2020 11:12 pmNowhere did I read that AGEOD was dropping the game. Maybe one on the Fall of Assyria in the 6th Century BCE? However, that would be another game altogether.

Re: Future of Field of Glory: Empires - an appeal
I love this game - it has some very clever mechanisms to make this an interesting game. I will buy any DLC that will come out.
But it has some quirks which lead to a bit too much mico-management and some other odds and ends where it could be better. I doubt it would be economically sane to try to fix that in this game and sell it as DLC.
The game is also not designed to sell scenarios. AFAIK those are just a bunch of text files. OTOH I don't see a huge amount of user made content which is, I guess, caused by the lack of an scenario editor. No revenue on that path.
Then there is the game mechanic: it works well if you have an 'average' amount of population but has its problems on the extreme ends (no fault here - that is were you play most of the time). Extending the timeline or going further back won't work unless you tweak the system.
Having said all this I think I'd rather have a new game that uses similar mechanics but plays in a different time or setting or scale than trying to cram something into a good game.

There's hundreds of hours of content in the game already, so I'm not too fussed about getting more.

Well, this is interesting
https://steamcommunity.com/app/1011390/ ... 774/?ctp=3
PocusFR, developer, said «Yes I can confirm that the game after Empires is based on an improved Empires, in another time period
I'll see if I can disable this Persian take over, as an option for the next patch.»
That was on the 22nd september as you can see in the link to the relevant steam discussion thread. So, keeping with the FoG:E engine, albeit improved (which is normal) for the next game..."in another time period"...there might be some hope to see (at long last) a full-blown game set in the very early Middle Ages, very late Late Antiquity. One can only dream... Fingers crossed.

My preference would be a Renaissance era campaign (Italian Wars, French Wars of Religion, 30 Years' War, English Civil War, etc.), using Pike & Shot Campaigns as the optional tactical battle resolution system.

Re: Future of Field of Glory: Empires - an appeal
i hope it will be more in line with Ageod style - with smaller, more dense regions, shorter turns ( monthly) - meaning more operational wargaming. Games covering shorter time period but diving depper in to it
