I'm trying to get excited about the release of FOG2 Medieval, but generally this is a period which has held very little interest for me, other than the Crusades. I've read quite a bit about the Crusades, but the little I've read about this period in Europe have failed to generate much interest. And while I find the Crusades rather interesting, I'm concerned that the battles won't be especially fun in FOG2, because it sounds like most of the Moslem armies were of the horsey-shooty type, which I don't really enjoying playing (as or against).
I bought some books based on recommendations on the FOG2 forum, can anyone recommend anything for FOG2 Medieval? I've looked on Amazon, but based on reviews none of the books really seemed to stand out...

OK, I'll even start! I just started a book, but it seems pretty good: Western Warfare in the Age of the Crusades: 1000-1300 by John France.
I'm also tempted by the Smails book, but would rather read something interesting about European warfare in the period, rather than Crusades...

Armies of Feudal Europe by Ian Heath
Armies and Enemies of the Crusades by Ian Heath
The Fourth Crusade by Donald E. Queller and Thomas F. Madden
Infantry Warfare in the Early Fourteenth Century by Kelly DeVries
Of course the only one immediately relevant to the first release is Armies of Feudal Europe

These may be of interest.
War in the Middle Ages by Phillippe Contamine (translated by Michael Jones).
Warfare in Feudal Europe 730-1200 by John Beeler.
Anglo-Norman Warfare Edited by Mathew Strickland.
Also for a more general introduction, there is always The Art of War in the Middle Ages by Oman.
A couple of more specialised books, concerning how the English 'fielded' and financed its military force are:
Feudal Military Service by Sanders and,
The Government of England by Henry I by Green

Re: Please Name Some Books!
I just finished the book by France which I mentioned above--it is very good.
Next up for me is The Greatest Knight, about William Marshal: https://www.amazon.com/Greatest-Knight- ... 423&sr=8-1
Sounds pretty good. Thanks for the other tips in this thread.

Re: Please Name Some Books!
All very good suggestions, would 'second' all of them (other than the one on 4th Crusade which I have not read).
I would add one of my favourites (that made a big impact on me when I first came across it in the university library many many years ago) -
The Art of Warfare in Western Europe During the Middle Ages - J.F. Verbruggen.
regards
Ben
