Battle of Muret 1213; design notes . . .

Post by stockwellpete »

Design notes: Battle of Muret 1213

The combined forces of the Aragonese and French Cathars were much bigger than the French Crusader forces in ths battle. But the mounted Crusader contingent, led by Simon de Montfort the Elder, did catch Pedro II's cavalry unawares at the start of the battle and they were also able to flank them.

So, in this scenario, the first and second lines of the Aragonese/French Cathar forces, consisting of sergeants and mounted knights, have been downgraded to “below average” for the sergeants and “average” for the knights, except those with Pedro II of Aragon, to represent their disarray at the very start of the battle.

The knight unit with Simon de Montfort the Elder in it is depicted as military order knights as he was an exceptionally competent battle commander.

The size of the armies is 1477 men for the French Crusaders and 3466 for the combined Cathar forces. Army points are 1171 versus 1637.
