I've checked it out from yesterday, but it says there are no betatest recruitings for FoG atm. Maybe you haven't started it yet?

I have never played (or even read) the original FoG rules. Would there be any advantage in purchasing a copy? Is there an assumption that a purchaser of the video game is conversant with the tabletop rules?

It is not a requirement. A FoG player would be at an advantage over a non FoG player but thats down to the way combats are calculated and the FoG player knowing what to expect and being more experienced at the desired troop match ups. However this is all based on trying to recreate hsitorical match ups accurately so in theory if know your history you'd be just as well off (assuming we got it right in FoG!).
