(Actually I am about halfway through but need to find time to type these up. I have earned a minor victory in my first scenario in this walkthrough. Any guesses which mission? I could have tried it again, but I am trying to keep as much of a blind playthrough as I can as it is more exciting that way)

I couldn't take it all over but I was able to get most of the stuff.
Tiger's are boss on the field but my KV's and Pz4G's are still kicking butt. I am not sure of my strong push across the Donets, I felt like the things coming at me would have still came without me assaulting them, but I am not sure.

Next Belgorod which looks very similar to Kharkov with the same kind of message about the Donets, but will I listen this time?...we shall see?

Taking Oboyan is extremely difficult and very costly.
I loved it.
If I was to play again I would work on not sweating the secondary objectives and concentrate on pushing the flanks as quickly as possible after getting the other main objectives and concentrate solely on attacking and seizing Oboyan.
This means I am missing the attack on the Kursk Armory South and going straight to Prokhorovka.

Oboyan is one of the hardest in the campaign and definitely costs more troops than any other battle. Even Prokhorovka is easier to fight. Oboyan is surprsingly easy in the beginning and the western counterattack is easy to wipe out. But trying to get a bridgehead to the east is slow if you don't commit a large enough force and slogging up the east side past all those entrenched units takes forever. Then if you take a large force up the middle the crossing into Oboyan and the whole riverbank is a hard fight. The fighting in Oboyan itself is a bloodbath for your airforce and infantry, and the tanks cannot get in the city without being eaten up by Guards infantry. The Russians also have a counter attack force in the far north that hits your right flank making the river center the only approach point.

I did notice that after I finished 1943 and tried to look up a let's play grand campaign I could not find one who did Oboyan. Live and learn.

OK!! No more messing around. This is the culmination of the Kursk offensive and after getting a minor victory last turn. So based on this being the largest tank battle, Daddy is going BIG so he does not need to go home.

I try to keep my armor in a line in this scenario with flak 88's & AA units behind them to deal with air units. Keep your strongest units on the ends & "corners" to withstand swarm attacks. It's a tough one - but, a fun one.

i was wondering about this mysterious mission "Oboyan" for some time, i played the GrandCampaign 3 times and never encountered a map with such name
it appears that i always choose to attack kursk from the north in my playthroughs and boy it's way easier than south

just checked the full map of Oboyan (surrender then view battlefield) and it's a hell hole....
the sad thing about getting marginal victory in this map will make you miss the option of attacking Kursk-Armory where you can hijack two KV-85 and add them to your core units.

It would seem that retreating them all would limit your offensive ability by the end of the battle. I could not justify bringing a 4 star infantry knocked down to 2 strength back up to 10 with green replacements and get it knocked to 2 stars!

I try and nurse my units and avoid huge losses by advancing slowly. If I get one knocked down to 7 or 8 I will use in game elite replacements. If it is down to 2 or 3 I will retreat it and replace losses at deployment with elite.

I hardly did during 1939 through 1940 and only would buy elite replacements between levels, if you pay close attention to my playthrough I list whenever I buy replacements in game and even list whther or not they are elite or regular.

I try to make severely weakened units sit out the rest of the scenario, for example in my current playthrough my Captured KV-85 was severely weakened in the middle of my mission so I just backed him up and am keeping him safe. But sometimes if it is early on I will buy Elite Replacements for them. Just not early on.

As with other scenarios, the Russian horde piles up before the objective. Strong defenders - city hex entrenched infantry & Tigers with 23 defense - can hold if they're deployed in a line. During your turn, you can bombard & attack the units directly in front of you with no retreat paths for easy prestige. Meanwhile, the remainder of your force can wipe out the paratroops in the south, then advance across the river & swing north. That's how I played it anyhow. Curious to see how that compares to your strategy.

Flampanzer Heinz Rondorf 3 star double hero

You absolutely MUST get Rondorf out of that Flammpanzer. He's too valuable for that. This is 1944. The fun's over. Besides, a weak Flammpanzer will draw repeated attacks by T34/85's until he's gone - which should be about 2 attacks BTW. This is how it will go. As the AI plays out its turn he'll be quickly spotted & targeted. There will be a few seconds of relief after he survives the first attack reduced to a 2 strength unit. Unfortunately, this will be a very fleeting feeling as another tank then appears from the fog to finish him. The AI just loves killing those.

You can go with your choice of a Panther or Tiger upgrade. With all of his bonuses you can't make a bad decision. Good luck!
