[Brave new World] 1- Baptism of Fire

Post by StuccoFresco »

Hi all, this is the third full campaign of my mod (version 3.0: https://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=108116). It will introduce a third faction, show the new strategic map with borders (finally) and experiment with multiple AI sides for scenarios.

The disastrous 1942 campaign has terribly weakened Yugoslavia: Lower Bulgaria has been conquered by the British, hundreds of thousands of soldiers have been killed, wounded or taken prisoners, the crucial city of Budapest is lost, thousands of tanks and guns destroyed. With the nation on the brink of disaster, our comrades of the Second International came to our help: the Eire has started shipping tens of thousands of soldiers and hundreds of vehicles; the Zairian League is providing shipping and naval escorts to this stream of reinforcements, as well as entire shiploads of artillery guns and ammunition.

Meanwhile, the British have consolidated their holdings, building a railroad from Kirkwall to Varna that supplies their stronghold in the heart of Bulgaria. From there, their armies keep pushing toward Plovdiv and further north. With the entire front in constant risk of collapsing, it’s crucial the Irish troops are sent to the first line as soon as possible, but they are not ready yet.

Coordinating two different armies won’t be easy. Compromises must be found, and the coordination must be tested thoroughly. This small operation will be a test: The XXXII Pešadija Korpus has been ordered to attack two towns in a secondary front to draw away British troops from Varna. For the occasion, the Irish 7th Meichnithe Division has been sent to assist the attack. Unfortunately, they will respond directly to the Joint Operations’ Command, like us. Coordination will be atrocious, and the Irish commander is a renown hothead that will likely charge ahead hunting for glory. Keeping them alive will be hard, but necessary.

The battle plan is straightforward: the Irish will surely attack toward Madhzarovo, so we have to do the same to avoid them being quickly isolated. A single Regiment of the 33rd Pešadija Division will hold its position to protect our supply route while the rest of the Korpus will follow the Irish.

Madzharovo is defended by the British 41st Infantry Division and a Support Guns Regiment, but they can’t hope to hold for long, and by the 8th of July they are decimated and routed. The enemy’s 71st Motorized Division, however, rushes forward to stop our advance; extensive minefields force the 36th, 33rd and part of the 39th Pešadija Divisions to advance through the forests. A Regiment of the 37th Pešadija Division has tried to flank the British positions, but the river crossings are mined, too.

British bombers hit our artillery, but Irish Interceptors rush to our defense.

The advance is going smoothly: the British motorized troops are too few to stop the entire Korpus and the Irish mechanized units, but suddenly aerial reconnaissance spots enemy APCs and IFVs moving toward the battlefield: a Mechanized Division is arriving.

The 36th Pešadija Division marches out of the woodlands and surprises an enemy Medium Guns Regiment in the open, overrunning it. The 33rd Pešadija engages a British Motorized Regiment.

Madzharovo has been conquered, but the Irish aren’t advancing: the British motorized troops have dug trenches in front of them and have mauled an overconfident Meichnithe Regiment.

10/7/1943
Suddenly, the Irish commander decides to charge forward, flanking the British troops and advancing east. They are promptly cut off and the British counterattack my now exposed artillery regiments, claiming many guns. I have to rescue the situation by reconnecting the Irish to our supply routes and engaging the isolated British units. The 36th and 39th Pešadija Divisions keep advancing east.

11/7/1943
The Irish keep advancing, moving past the leading 36th Pešadija Division until they encounter enemy mechanized units. The encircled remnants of the British 71st Motorized Division are trying to escape and I have to dedicate two Pešadija Regiments to chase them. My formation is fragmented, but there is no sign of enemy presence for the most part so I’ll just advance until a frontline forms naturally. This however leads to my HQ moving too far from my artillery, that not only is lagging behind but is also under constant harassment by enemy Fighters.

The British 63rd Mechanized Division has arrived, and hits hard pushing back the Irish and a couple of my Pešadija Regiments. My infantry is trying to flank them and reach Bolyarovo unseen. The remnants of the 71st Motorized Division surrender.

13/7/1943
The Irish are trying to flank the British, but their advance leaves a huge gap in our lines, and the enemy promptly cuts off both the Irish units and our leading Pešadija Regiments. Once again it’s up to my infantry to reconnect the cut off units to the rest of the Korpus.

Finn&Welst Eitleog MK3
The Finn&Welst was founded in 1920 by a British expatriate and a local engineer to develop airframes for the local Irish nascent aviation. The interest in the new technology and its military significance attracted plenty of funds from the central government, resulting in a rapid expansion of the factory in the 20s and 30s. In 1933 it was decided to transfer the larger airframes’ production to another site and concentrate the original factory on lighter frames.

The Eitleog production line is the mainstay of the Irish Interceptor fleet: the MK3 is a fast, high-altitude bomber hunter with impressive climbing rate but a rigid frame that hampers its maneuverability. Its single 40mm gun is excellent at downing bombers with just a couple hits, but its rate of fire makes it less efficient in dogfights against enemy fighters, leaving the single 8mm machinegun as the most useful weapon is such situations. Irish fighters are forced to undergo intense training to make the most of their Interceptors and avoid high losses whenever the enemy fighters show up.

The Irish advance again toward Bolyarovo, ignoring the enemy behind their lines and their own artillery support that is apparently wandering far north. This forces my infantry to advance too to avoid facing the strong British units in the open, and splits the XXXII Korpus in two: the 39th Pešadija Division is now in the rearguard with the Korpus HQ and the artillery, while the rest is moving toward Bolyarovo. In the process, the 63rd Mechanized Division has been cut off from supplies; this could at least slow them down for a bit, but the situation is absurd.

Image

15/8/1943
I don’t know how to handle this situation: the Irish are currently assaulting Bolyarovo, half my infantry has been cut into pieces and the rest is frantically following the Irish. Meanwhile the 39th Pešadija Division, my HQ and my artillery are stuck much further west, stuck. In the middle, a powerful British division that can obliterate me in the open. I had to bring forward the lone 33rd Pešadija Division’s Regiment I left earlier to guard my supplies, just to muster enough soldiers in case the enemy Mechanized Division comes for my HQ.

16-17/8/1943
I have no idea where the enemy is, but Bolyarovo is under heavy assault and is conquered by the Irish soldiers. I will now move toward the town of Melnik to complete the objective; I have no artillery support and only 4 Pešadija Regiments. The other half of the Korpus is digging trenches and wondering where the British are.

18/7/1943
The Irish 7th Meichnithe Division is entrenching at Bolyarovo. My infantry reaches Melnik, defended by the British 22nd Infantry Division; it seems the British are experiencing supply issues so I don’t want to rush things: let them starve a bit.

19-20/7/1943
The assault on Melnik goes on; the enemy is clearly struggling for supplies and its combat proficiency is deteriorating fast. I predict the town will fall in a couple days tops. The rest of my Korpus is trying to locate the enemy Mechanized units, counting on them being low on fuel by now.

21/7/1943
My troops finally find the British 63rd Mechanized Division: it’s moving toward Bolyarovo to cut off my offensive and maybe retake the town. Fuel shortages, however, are slowing them down and the road to the town is littered with abandoned vehicles. My HQ is leading the 39th Pešadija Division to intercept them. Around Melnik, the 22nd Infantry Division has tried to counterattack and cut off my own units, but is rapidly disintegrating.

Image

22/7/1943
The British are frantically trying to counterattack to buy some time for reinforcements to arrive, but they are too disorganized: the Irish surge forward from Bolyarovo to crush their hopes of a counteroffensive, and my infantry enters Melnik.

23-24/7/1943
The British 63rd Mechanized Division is doomed: it’s now isolated in the forests and hills west of Bolyarovo, its Regiments hunted by both Irish Meichnithe and Yugoslavian Pešadija units. It lacks fuel for its vehicles and ammo for its guns. The stubborn British keep fighting to escape their destiny, but more and more surrender every hour. By the 25th of July both them and the 22nd Infantry Division cease to exist.

The battle has been an improbable success: the Irish were so bold and reckless in their advance that they must have left the British commanders completely flabbergasted and unable to coordinate a defense. The British 63rd Mechanized Division could have turned the tide of the battle, but ended up squandering its potential against weakened Yugoslavian infantry and depleted its supplies
