Artillery

Post by SnuggleBunnies »

Not sure if any of this will receive consideration but -

Light Artillery is I think too cheap at 24 in both games. I think 30 would be reasonable, but if not that 27 at least. The non gunpowder artillery is especially deadly due to its overhead shooting, which I am still rather doubtful of at the representational scale of the game...

Non gunpowder heavy artillery I think still has a far outsized effect. I know it's in there for 'chrome' but I'm really doubtful of its use in field battles. The one account I know of of the Mongols using them in Europe was against a fortified position after all. I suppose it will stay in the game because the attempt to remove them from MP alone was a fail and I guess they need to stay in SP for fun factor.

I am 100% on board with this, at present light arty is the best value unit in the game and pre-gunpowder heavy arty doesn't really belong in open battles.
30 points for light arty would be good, I would still be using it some of the time at that cost.
Since it has proved difficult to remove the heavy arty from the lists how about increasing the cost to maybe 48-60. It is not always useful in battles at 36 points but when the opposing armies match ups are a certain way then it can be a battle winner and at least a higher cost would reflect that.

Am also not sure about the representational scale, there does seem to be a lot of arty with some of the later Medieval armies but it is not a period that I know much about.

I will consider this, but am waiting to see if anyone else posts in this thread.

My experiences are exclusively from single player but light arty at 24 points has always been a bargain. If the light arty cost was increased similarly to slingers I think it would still be a good purchase in most cases.

I wouldn't touch heavy arty at 48-60 points though, I rarely use it as is. Having something that overpriced in the army list would hurt the AI as it would end up wasting its points.

I agree with nerfing or making artillery (light and heavy) more expensive.

I usually do not care about the pt issues more than historical accuracy but I agree to raise the pt of the Light Artillery to 27 or 30, 24 is too cheap for it since 24 pt is equal to the Javalinmen and Slingers, especially considering the artillery pieces were not cheap in that period, and the massive use of the artillery in open battles were rare, large numbers of artillery pieces mainly used in siege battles. Duke Charles the Bold's artillery train in 1475 was made up of 23 large pieces and 70 medium and light pieces of artillery, the city of Innsbruck only had 10 large pieces and 37 medium and light pieces of artillery in 1486, and the representation scale of the artillery's in-game models are not one piece but several pieces of artillery.

How about:

Light Artillery 30
Heavy Artillery 40

in both games?

Sounds good to me, they'll still be worth bringing
