French OOB for Auerstadt

Post by shadowdragon »

Having done the Prussians, it's only fair to do the Davout's III Corps...I've tried to stick to the list as much as possible, which means that I've rated some Ligne regiments has having "light infantry" capability (and, no, I don't want to go into the discussion about ligne versus legere and line versus light...there's already been some good posts about that). As for which regiments are rated superior or average (or optionally drilled versus veteran), I've been random about it....well sort of, I've tried give each division one superior line infantry unit, which means my choice was restricted to those regiments that were smaller in strength to keep within the superior/veteran limit, which I bumped up to 14 bases from 12 bases - proportionately with the increase in total line infantry from 48 to 56). Also, arguably, I've made Davout 'charismatic'. That's just my view...as a soldier I would much preferred to have served under Davout than any other of Napoleon's marshals but that's being rational about it which may has little to do with the heat of battle. As for the division commanders the list allows just two exceptional / skilled. Perhaps all three infantry division commanders should be rated at least skilled/exceptional. I've kept it to one exceptional, one skilled and one competent. The cavalry could have been assigned as unit(s) to one of the divisions with cavalry attachments for the other divisions. I preferred to keep them concentrated in a cavalry 'division' (really a brigade). One change I sometimes make to the rules when playing games is to assign each side so many artillery bases and corps cavalry bases which can be grouped into units or used as attachments (e.g., Viallanes' 10-12 cavalry bases could be assigned as 4 attachments to 2 divisions with 6-8 bases as 1 or 2 units in the 3rd division). So what's below is just one variant...

III Corps: Davout (Exceptional Charismatic)

1st Division: Morand (Competent) - rating chosen as this is the last division on the field
13th Legere (small average veteran light infantry)
30th Ligne (small superior drilled line infantry)
17th Ligne (large average drilled line infantry)
51st Ligne (large average drilled line infantry)
61st Ligne (large average drilled line infantry)
8pdr Field artillery (small average veteran)
2 Skirmisher attachments
1 Officer attachment

2nd Division: Friant (Skilled)
48th Ligne (small average drilled light infantry)
108th Ligne (small superior drilled line infantry)
33rd Ligne (large average drilled line infantry)
118th Ligne (large average drilled line infantry)
12pdr Field artillery (small average veteran)
2 Skirmisher attachments
1 Officer attachment

3rd Division: Gudin (Exceptional Charismatic) - rating chosen as this is the first division to engage
25th Ligne (small veteran light infantry)
12th Ligne (large superior drilled line infantry)
21st Ligne (large average drilled line infantry)
85th Ligne (large average drilled line infantry)
1 Artillery attachment
2 Skirmisher attachments
1 Officer attachment

Cavalry 'Division': Viallanes (Competent Charismatic)
1st Chasseurs (small superior drilled light cavalry)
2nd Chasseurs (small superior drilled light cavalry)
12th Chasseurs (small superior drilled light cavalry)
Horse artillery (small average veteran)
Officer Attachment (Exelmans - attached to the 1st Chasseurs)

Looks good. Expensive :)

I tried to shoe horn the army into an 800 ap competition army:

Davout Exceptional

Morand - Skilled

13th Legere - Small Average Drilled
17th & 30th Ligne - large Average Drilled cavalry attachment
51st & 71st Ligne - small average
Small Foot artillery

Friant - Competent
33rd Ligne - small average light infantry
48th Ligne - Small average drilled
108th & 111st Ligne - Large average drilled cavalry attachment
Medium foot artillery

Gudin - Competent

12th & 21st Ligne - large average drilled
25th & 85th Ligne - large average drilled cavalry attachment
medium foot artillery
Chasseurs Small superior drilled with officer attachment

think it comes to 800 ap exactly.

Yes, expensive. Designed to fight the Prussian hordes at Auerstadt. I mostly do historical battles or asymmetric scenarios, so expensive isn't a problem, but nice shoe horning.
