Upon vanquishing the defenders, the lair undergoes a transformation, morphing into a resource-abundant zone on the map, bestowing immense advantages upon the conqueror.

Defeat them to gain valuable resources and trigger a chain of events that will challenge you in the mid to late game by an event on normal difficulty on turn 300 and on Hard difficulty on turn 200. This setting will be adjustable in the game settings options, so it can be turned off entirely.
