AO 1946 - Operation Holzfaller

Winter months have been slow for the Axis invasion forces, who had to stabilize their front after the American counterattacks. Despite of that, just being passive would be a mistake and thus general Bertorelli was tasked with securing crossings over the Mississippi river and establishing a foothold on the other side. This would allow to quickly begin a mass attack once the ice melded in the spring. There were a few ways to achieved this goal. One of them was simply securing St. Louis or Memphis, major cities with established bridges. Another, would be to attempt a temporary bridge prepared by military engineers between two locations. The general thought that the best way would be to attempt all three alternatives, making the enemy unsure how things could then develop. The task was given to Italian and Japanese forces, with some cooperation from bridge engineers from other Axis nations.

Highlights


The general had quite a large force at his disposal. Sadly, some of the deployed units were far from modern and could only serve minor supporting roles.


The Italian division moved northeast, with the goal of attacking St. Louis. It had large amounts of artillery an infantry prepared for this purpose, but also tanks to secure the road ahead.


The Japanese split into two groups. One escorting bridge engineers and one moving southeast in the direction of Memphis.


Some resistance encountered south of Walnut ridge was quickly dealt with, but the general did not immediately move towards Memphis, as visibility was poor and he needed to first scout the road ahead.


Meanwhile, Italians reached St. Louis quickly and overwhelmed the defenders by taking advantage of artillery and air support.


Main Japanese unit reached the location that was earlier pinpointed as the ideal place to have bridge engineers build a temporary crossing. However, it seems that the Americans reached the same conclusion as to which spot would be at risk and had it heavily defended. It took Bertorelli having to call in for Italian support to finally start working on the passage.


Combined efforts of bridge engineers paid off. Axis units were able to cross and join with Italian forces traveling south from St. Louis, trapping some of the American defenders.


This success allowed allow attack Memphis from multiple directions and capture it as well.

Overall:

The general was satisfied with the results of Operation Holzfaller. Having not one, but three river crossings over the Mississippi put a lot of pressure on the Americans, who now could not be certain which one of these points would be used in the spring. It also reduced the chance and potential impact of retaliatory atomic strikes. Capturing the bridges was just the beginning however. While the pontoon temporary crossing could be disassembled for the time being and only recreated for the actual attack, the permanent ones in captured cities would surely be the subject of fierce enemy attempts at recapture. It was up to general Bertorelli to hold them, as the Germans could not yet spare men and supplies. It was going to be a long, bloody winter season...

Yes, but each time I have to repair the landkreuzer from about 20 strength to full 50, it takes up quite a large chunk of that gain (which will be visible comparing my end prestige here with the start of the next scenario). Still, it's worth it. Yamato is a huge bullet magnet, so at least it means my weaker units are not prioritized by the AI and not damaged as much, which is great as I could risk having them wiped out. Sometimes I simply bait attacks on the Yamato on purpose to keep them safer.

AO 1946 - Operation Ken-Go

After making sure that crossings over the Mississippi were secured, general Bertorelli had just one order for the reminder of the winter. Hold them at all costs. Fortunately the weather forecast for the foreseeable future predicted heavy rain and snow, meaning that the enemy could not strike reliably using their atomic weapons and had to rely on conventional warfare. Counterattacks against Axis positions would surely be unprecedented in their intensity, as allowing the push east would put the Americans in a dangerously exposed position. Even knowing that, the only reserves still capable of holding the line during winter were Bulgarian, Finnish and Slovak troops, with some auxiliary Japanese forces provided not directly under the general's command and with some Spanish air support. Everyone else was simply too exhausted for the task. Highlights


The Finns quickly set up positions around Memphis to aid the small Japanese group stationed there that lacked any heavy armored units. They even pushed forward slightly, to lessen the pressure on the defenders.


Around St. Louis, Bulgarian, Slovak and Japanese soldiers formed a dense line that completely halted the enemy advance. In other circumstances it would be a tempting target for American atomic bombers, but the vicinity of the city and its civilian population, coupled with poor visibility due to weather, meant that such a attack was deemed unlikely, as long as the Axis soldiers would not move away from their positions too much.


Bulgarian cavalry managed to even raid one of the smaller towns in the area, but the general did not dare to move further into open ground.


In the south, after initial successes, the situation quickly became dire. An overwhelming tank push forced the Finns back over the bridges to the other side of the Mississippi. St. Louis crossing held strong, but this loss was quite a setback.


A few Japanese soldiers managed to buy just enough time for the Finns to evacuate.


Luckily, in the north there was no sign of the enemy making any progress at all. The defensive formation set up by Bertorelli inflicted heavy losses on the attacking enemy with minimal casualties on the Axis side.


The stalemate caused most of the Americans to move towards St. Louis. Sensing an opportunity, as the frontline became unbalanced, Bertorelli ordered the Finnish division to counterattack, taking Memphis back again.


As winter slowly approached its end, the fierce battle was a "victorious draw" for the general. More Axis armies were on the way, and with Memphis retaken and St. Louis held firmly, it was time to move again on the offensive.


There was of course the slight problem of huge American forces on the other side of the river, but German presence in other areas, crossing the Mississippi and potentially encircling them, meant that they had no choice but to retreat to not risk getting tens of thousands men trapped.

Overall:

After a long, bloody winter the invasion could resume its push east. There were a few plans considered by the Axis high command, but out of all the possibilities, one seemed like the most risky, yet potentially efficient one. While the Japanese would secure flanks and hold captured ground and Germans steadily invade more states, Bertorelli and his mixed Axis army would drive forward directly onto the American capital, hopefully forcing peace negotiations. Prolonged warfare seemed increasingly risky, as nuclear strikes became more and more common on the battlefield and the Axis were sure they could not win a war of attrition so far away from home...

Once spring finally came, it was time to resume the march east. Highlights


The Japanese moved directly east. Mountainous terrain limited effective use of tanks, so infantry and artillery would be more important in these circumstances.


Hungarians before moving east first moved to attack Fort Knox. They immediately encountered heavy resistance both in the air and on the ground.


However, as this was not a key location for the enemy at this point of the war, they quickly managed to defeat any opposition and reach their target.


Meanwhile, Japanese forces were making steady progress, but had to face a large counterattack near a key road junction and got stalled temporarily.


A smaller group of Japanese units tried to encircle the enemy, but due to intensified bombing raids by the Americans also had to slow down their advance.


Hungarians finally captured Fort Knox and could move in to assist the Japanese further east. Paratrooper battalions were sent in to deal with any survivors still resisting in the local area.


Joining both Axis divisions allowed to break American defenses. Hungarians occupied Huntington and the Japanese secured Beckley, opening the road to the main target, the city of Roanoke.


The city was poorly defended and was quickly taken over by the Axis.

Overall:

Bertorelli's push through the state of Virginia was quicker than he expected. It opened a road to the enemy capital, but this was a dangerous move, exposing both flanks of the general's army to fierce counterattacks. The timing was crucial, as allowing the enemy too many opportunities to stall for time could lead to the battle turning into slow, trench warfare. However, there was one opportunity the Axis leaders had in mind to deal with the issue and that was securing the main American production site for atomic weapons. It would delay the attack on Washington DC, but any nuclear spoils captured could make the fighting much easier, as having the option to use them would allow to deal with any unexpected fortifications.

AO 1946 - Operation Prometheus

Operation Prometheus was an assignment for the general aimed at capturing the American atomic research and productions facility near Oak Ridge. This would allow to potentially get a large stockpile of powerful weapons that could decide the push to Washington. Not only would it potentially prevent their usage against the Axis forces, but could make enemy counterattack much more difficult. Of course the location would be guarded like no other place in the country, so Bertorelli had to ignore the fatigue of his men and call upon only the best.

Highlights


Oakdale and Kingston were first objectives on the way to the facility, and their capture opened the route though relatively flat terrain. Defenses were as tough as the general expected, with paratroopers especially at risk of takin the hit from enemy atomic weapons.


The way via Sunbright lead through hills and mountains, but artillery and Yamato helped breach the American blockade there.


Shortly, Axis forces reached Wartburg, but the enemy atomic bombers continued to harass them, especially targeting remote, less defended ground units.


In fact, one of such hits nearly wiped out the Italian mountain infantry battalion, but the men managed to survive the strike, just barely.


All the previous hits were on relatively isolated units, but one of the bombs hit a much denser formation, causing heavy casualties.


Still, despite the losses, the general's army pushed forward and soon arrived at the gates of the atomic research facility.


The enemy was throwing everything they had at the advancing Axis troops, to the point that the general was afraid that there would be noting to capture on site.


Once some airfield got secured closer to the front line, the Americans finally got the taste of their own medicine.


Despite ferocious defense, the facility fell. General's men captured multiple warheads, as not all of them managed to be evacuated or destroyed in time.


Remaining forces crossed the river and moved towards Knoxville.


The city itself fell quickly, as the majority of American reserves were exhausted earlier.

Overall:

While this was a costly, bloody struggle against overwhelming odds, the capture of so many atomic weapons was the breakthrough the general needed to realize his plan. Now was the time to immediately move towards the capital, ignoring any other secondary targets, aiming for the one final blow that would break American morale and allow for peace negotiations to begin. If this failed, the fate of a prolonged conflict would remain uncertain.

General Bertorelli was now on route to Washington DC with his army. He selected only the best veterans, equipped with what was most suitable for the task. Since the first phase of the plan meant reaching the capital itself and operating on open terrain, the advancing force was vehicle heavy, with large air support, to ensure fast progress towards the objective. Speed was everything, all other goals were secondary and much less important from a strategic standpoint.

Highlights


The army was split into three groups. Two to secure the flanks and one to move forward all the way to the Potomac river.


Despite good anti-aircraft cover, an enemy atomic bomber managed to strike the main Axis column causing chaos and greatly slowing down the advance.


Even with this setback, Bertorelli's mean were making steady progress, capturing Centreville, but encountered stiff resistance on the ground as well.


Next important point on the map was Fairfax, and gaining control of it opened the way further east to the main parts of the American capital city.


Scouts have sighted one of the captured landkreuzers in American service, but thanks to the Fugaku atomic bomber, this dangerous target was quickly disposed of.


First Axis units approached the capital, targeting Arlington as their main objective in the initial stage of the city fighting.


After securing Arlington, the next major target was the so called Pentagon, the main site responsible for enemy army command, but probably already evacuated by this point.


Meanwhile, parts of the Axis force continued to secure both the left flank...


...as well as the right one, to ensure that the advancing units did not get cut off by enemy counterattacks.


Infantry slowly made its way through Washington DC and secure d the Pentagon. As suspected, the structure was largely abandoned by this point, but in a few more days, all of the capital west of the Potomac river was now in Axis hands.

Overall:

Capturing half of the enemy capital dealt a massive blow to enemy morale. Soldiers were still fighting ferociously, but it was clear how devastating this was to the civilian population. Bertorelli needed to quickly capitalize on this success, despite the losses starting to pile up among his men. This was not the time to hesitate. To win, he had to take this one of a kind opportunity and have the army fight though the rest of the city. Total victory, or a risky gable, only time would tell if this strategy was a worthwhile one.

Conquest of Washington was progressing slowly. With open ground slowly shifting into urban environment, Bertorelli had to put a lot of his tanks in reserve relying now more on infantry and artillery. Air support was limited, as it seemed that the entirety USAAF was now operating over the city and thus Axis planes had to be relegated to defensive roles. However, his men had one advantage the Americans did not and it was being able to use atomic weapons freely. There would be no chance that the enemy would bomb their own capitol, while V2 rockets could target major concentrations of ground troops.

Highlights


First rocket hit immediately, opening the way via a fortified Theodore Roosevelt Island.


Another one was aimed at forces around the Jefferson Memorial. These strikes caused panic among the enemy and allowed the Axis to quickly advance in the initial stage of the attack.


As the attack slowed down near the Washington Monument, enemy air force presence became even more noticeable. Waves of fighters and bombers were almost unending, making it difficult to advance. Even the most experience pilots flying the best possible machines could not keep up with American numbers.


Further north, Bertortelli's forces established a small bridgehead on the other side of the Potomac, but did not expand it too rapidly to avoid getting exposed to a possible counterattack.


Only after American tanks have been dealt with, the Axis could venture north more rapidly, securing a few local airfields and helping reduce the pressure from the USAAF.


Next, the men established a secure formation and relying on artillery firepower, slowly begun to gain ground, fighting their way house after house.


The White House was now in sight, but it was almost certain that the president and all important personnel have long been evacuated.


After securing the Washington Monument, the other part of Axis forces concentrated their efforts on moving towards the Capitol building.


After long and bloody fighting, most of Washington DC was now in Axis hands.


With one last charge of Bulgarian cavalry, all major locations have been secured and apparently the enemy morale has been completely shattered.

Overall:

The triumph in Washington DC brought an end to the fighting and as such, the Word War. A peace delegation was on route to the Axis HQ with the hope that a ceasefire and permeant peace can be now negotiated. There was much to discuss, but Bertorelli hoped that Italy and other nations with which he fought so hard over all these years would not take a loss in the talks and preserve their independence and territory. Especially with all the casualties taken in this horrible conflict, even more so increased by apparent radiation sickness many of the soldiers were facing due to fighting in areas exposed to nuclear blasts. One thought was permanently occupying the general's mind, and that was the question, was this really a victory, or just a prelude to a new, even more polarized world order...

Overall:

It is finally over. When I first started this run, I did not expect general Bertorelli to reach Washington DC in the final mission, especially since back then the course of AO series was still a mystery. This was by far the most difficult campaign, with quite a few elite and bonus objectives never finished, or even attempted in the first place, but it was also by far the most enjoyable and educational. Having to use every trick up my sleeve to win, sometimes being forces to retreat and counterattack or simply hold my ground unable to move forward in situations where regular cores would just steamroll their way ahead made each win count. It also showed how much potential there is in scenarios for nations other than the major WW2 powers and I maintain my hope at least one of them will make their way into a DLC one day, similar to Order of Battle: Winter War. Now it is time to for me to move to the new Frontlines series, but if AO ever goes to the AO West path, I already have some ideas for runs, as just coming up with them is a fun activity of its own. For now however, it seems that it is some time for a bit of rest. With now well over 2,000h of play time it has been one heck of an adventure!
