First time at multiplayer (and not just in PC – but in any game) so I’m looking for just a “dip my toe in the water” type of a game – in other words… I might not be much of a challenge.
It was easy enough to set up a game challenge (well, that assumes I did it right) but what is the formal or informal protocol on what happens next? Is it waiting for someone to find it listed and answer your call or is there something else I should / could do?
Really all you need to do is issue a challenge - basically choose a game and post it. Someone will reply to your challenge, and you will get an email saying it has been accepted. Then, depending on who goes first, you will either jump in and start playing, or wait for your opponent to complete his turn, after which you will get another email saying it's your go.
You can set a password for your challenge - this is useful if you want to play with a specific opponent and have some means of contacting the person to let him know there is a game for him (and what the password is). That's pretty much it.
Check on your My Page (accessible from the main Slitherine page, link top left) that you have emails enabled. If so, check that they are not being caught by your spam filter.
I am playing one now – Poland, and I’m the defenders too. I know I will be slaughtered but I sort of did that by design. The point of the first PBEM for me was to just see how it all works and not to be concerned about strategy in the game… and what better scenario to do that in than Poland trying to fight off the flood of Germans.
Can i join a custom map if i did not download the map before?
Will the game download it automatically and put it in the right place or do i have to do it all manually?

Yes.
No. The map is stored through the server and the save file being passed back and forth.
So if you want, you have the option to download the map from the author, but thanks to our flexible system, you don't HAVE to.

I can't find any link or reference to "emails enabled" on my Slitherine MyPage.
I have started a email game, but I didn't receive any email notification, nor in my junk mail.
