How to become/setup multiplayer
Sorry to be so dense but can some one tell me how to set up or ideally in the first place join a multiplayer? Whenever I try all I get are unresponsive initial screens.

Re: Jumbo
Ave Possum I don't recognise the screen/all units. Is this from an on-line battle (I have only had time to play the AI thus far)? As regards the value of elephants I'm trying them out on my second run through as the Romans - not greatly impressed thus far, I expected them to be far more destructive ...

Re: Giant ancient ships
Possum, Don't let editorial cock-ups make you throw out the baby with the bath water. The Daily Telegraph is a major British quality paper, but I merely used it as indicative of much more detailed reporting of the Chinese fleet (It was also for example the subject of a detailed documentary on the BB...

Re: Ship size
Sorry Possum, I'm afraid you are incorrect in saying that the size of timber ship is not possible. In the 15th Century the chinses Admiral Zheng circumnavigated the globe in a fleet of huge ships, the largest being c. 500 feet long. The links below will give you more detail, and there is lots on thi...

Waypoints
Waypoints are great for getting troops behind the enemy/ flank attacks, etc. But what drives me up the wall is the tendency if ordered to advance at ordinary pace for the unit(s) to then abandon the plotted path and rush straight at the nearest enemy, except in charge mode when they do as commanded ...

Cypsela
I cannot recall this one either, but a missing general is likeliest. One scenario has him placed well back behind some forests with clear ground to the right as you look at the battlefield. as the Celts attack the general is left at the rear and doesn't move. I found the way to deal with this was de...

Re: Philistines
Sorry Possum, but it wasn't a general term. If you read the Old Testament the term covered (as you rightly said) the Sea People cities, ie Phonicians in Gaza, Gath, Ekron and a couple of others. Other enemies were identified by their nation or ancestry, as Midianites, Edomites (also refered to as Es...

Auxilliary Use of Scutum
Ave Magobarca I would be interested in the reference if you can recall it. A footnote to the pilum discussion. The Roman infantry tended to use a variety of spear types in the later empire as the barbarian recruitment policy changed weapons types and tactics, including pila type javelins, javelins w...

Further ponderings on Pila, shields, etc
Ave Possum wrote "Erm, actually, the way I read it, the pilum was intended to force the enemy to discard their shields. The idea was just covered in detail by some poster here a few days ago, but basically the tempered head stuck in the enemy shield, and the untempered metal shaft then bent. Th...

Effective distance.
Ave! Intrigued by the question I have done a quick bit of research. One wargame site suggested 40 metres as effective, but that seems ourageoudssly long. The Legio XXIV webpage suggests 20+ paces which fits in with the discussion above, dependent on the weight of the pilum and the strength of the th...

Celtic Campaign Final Army
The army was planned from the beginning so purchase and development of units was purposely limited to a total of 20 units including the general. Almost the entire campaign was fought at very hard, although on 4 occassions where casualty limits were set I dropped to hard as I couldn't seem to achieve...

Maps
I managed to get the CD version of Legion Gold a couple of years ago. Looking on the Slitherine Web page today I noticed mention of patches and a Hispania map that I don't recall appearing on the CD. I presume Ian that for these I will need to download the appropriate patches, the CD is the American...

I made this mistake first time around. You need to scroll down the unit list to find the higher level units. I got as far as the battle of Grannacus before I discovered my error!

Looking for new ideas
Ian I presume you have already considered Alexander's campaigns. The potential for multiple units, senarios is enormous. A combination of the Legion Arena approach, and an empire building strategy (as Spartan, CoW, etc) would be great. The option to do what Alexander didn't, i.e. conquer India would...

Apology
Apologies Spedius, I was confusing the biographer (or should I say publicist, Agricola's reporting was pretty biaised!) with his subject. Sorry all I have just re-read this and cannot believe how addle brained I've been! Tacitus was Agricolla's son-in-law who wrote a hagiographic account of his rela...

Actually Ian I think you will find that the truth is somewhere between the two positions for highly trained troops (Macedonians, and Romans for example). Whilst the front ranks would bunch, and shove to maintain pressure and momentum, and break up a bit, the rear ranks would have maintained their or...
