Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod Tournament

Sarissa came in two parts, so on the march it was broken down. On the field of battle, it was held straight up until combat was immanent. It weighed 5.5 to perhaps 6.5kg. Depending on length, I think 12 to 14 pounds. Long discussion on training and endurance in the book.

Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod Tournament

"Invincible Beast", the book mentioned above, has great information pertinent to the discussion regarding the need for two different phalanx types. It is possible that Philip started with a 10 rank formation and a slightly longer version of the Iphicratean spear, which was an elongated version of th...

Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod Tournament

If medium war bands in rough terrain are charged and win and enemy falls back, don’t the mediums stay put in the rough terrain per vanilla rules?

Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod Tournament

I played two MP turns with new version of FOGII. Did not notice any errors or problems. I did have a question on anarchy. One of the factors preventing anarchy charges is "foot charging out of protective terrain." Is this for all foot, heavy and medium? I had a heavy warband charge out of rough terr...

Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod Tournament

Does the new update for FOGII require us to update before continuing play? Do both players have to update or should we wait until game is over?

Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod Tournament

My folder looks like yours. What is the procedure? Do I just click on MULTIPLAYER and look for private games? Or is there a path which activates the ALT Mod as in when I go to Custom Battle, I click on the button that lets me choose ALT Mod?

Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod Tournament

Thanks, I will look at the file in MULTIPLAYER. I just copied the same file from CAMPAIGNS folder. I wonder if I should just delete it and copy the downloaded folder? I thought it was necessary to copy the entire downloaded folder. Did you just extract it to MULTIPLAYER from the download?

Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod Tournament

cromlechi: I can see your challenge in private matches but getting message "You need to download and install this free user content before you can play." I have been playing the mod in SP without trouble and have copied it to MULTIPLAYER folder. Not sure what is wrong. When I click on MULTIPLAYER I ...

Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod

Question on anarchy per rule d) ix. It says anarchy prevented if charging would expose unit to flank threat. In an SP game a phalanx unit had an anarchy charge that did just that and was charged and disrupted next turn. Phalanx is disciplined I think and was in command. I had 2 phalanx units anarchy...

Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod

This is from the Britannica web site on Falkirk: "The English first line, under Earl Marshal Roger Bigod and the earls of Hereford and Lincoln, tried the marsh in vain and then rode around its western side. The second line, commanded by Antony Bek, the warlike bishop of Durham, quickly circumvented ...

Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod

I would start with an extra 2% per turn if more than 1 square away and increase to 4% per turn if in ZOC of formed enemy. So after 1 turn in ZOC the percentage would rise from 4% to 6% then 8% after that turn. This may not be enough but testing will show that. Regarding the discussion of ZOC in the ...

Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod

I have now played 3 single player games using the latest version of the mod. Here is a brief report. The first game was Macedonian 270 BC versus Romans of the same period, large battle. I used as many pike units as there were in order to test the pike versus hastati/princeps outcome and got to comba...

Re: An Invincible Beast - Book Review

The chart I attempted to show the quincunx did not translate like it was on my screen. The TTTT or triarii should have been to the right of the the PPPP or principes and the HHHH or hastati also to the right of PPPP. This chart shows only half of the formation, so you are right that the 2 maniples i...

Re: An Invincible Beast - Book Review

Lets look at this from the perspective of a chiliarchiae of the phalanx moving up to confront a Mid-Republican Roman cohort, composed of perhaps 2 maniples of hastati each of 120 men, 2 maniples of principes of 120 men, 2 maniples of triarii of 60 men and 240 velites. The phalanx units would be proc...

Re: An Invincible Beast - Book Review

I think a bit more detail would be helpful regarding the impact phase of phalanx versus legion, particularly as regards the use of the famous "quincunx" or checkerboard formation. Duncan Head, in his very excellent "Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars", explains that "The chief purpose of the in...

Re: An Invincible Beast - Book Review

In answer to the general questions from Schweetness, this is my overall view of the phalanx when confronting Romans: First of all, the pike unit portrayed in the game is is the chiliarchia of 1024 composed of 4 syntagmas of 256 men 16 deep and 16 wide. Total width would be 64 men, each man in interm...
