I did start looking at UoC2 and Close Combat but I can't find the time to play them, let alone mod them.

For the sides problem, when you're editing scenarios have the Axis at the top in the SIDES.TXT file( and when your finished you can put it back to Allies at the top). I only have the SIDES.TXT file the wrong way so that the skirmish mode labels the sides correctly. The Soviets are on the wrong side ...

Is there any way of changing the position of troops within a square?
Currently troops form a cross within a tile at the limit of 8, could this be changed into a line formation from the normal position or is it hard coded.
