Re: Question on 2nd rank shifting
No. If you start in a legal formation then an advance cannot change that formation. If you want to shuffle rear rank bases around, you need to expand, contract or turn.smaul1 wrote:can a second rank shift while the front rank does not.

Re: Question on a multiple unit impact and melee with angles
so after impact we were able to conform some of the purple to the light green, but we are not sure how to conform the 1 purple stand that impacted the red BG. You never 'conform some' of a BG. If any can't, then none do. do we leave them as is (not moving them at all) with the one stand of purple f...

Cheap tat just standing in a line waiting to be charged v decent impetuous troops trying to force the issue. Classification as 'Defensive spear' indicates a style of drill or low-level tactical doctrine, not ingrained cowardice. Yes, some troops so classified are 'cheap tat'; they are the ones grad...

And yet the defensive spear is as good as offensive spear once you charge it...? And cheaper. Indeed. It's quite satisfying to see drilled offensive spear at 8AP each charging enthusiastically into my undrilled defensive ones at 6AP each. The combat is absolutely even, and there's more of me ... Be...

Re: Spearmen
What about Armoured, Average, Undrilled, Defensive spear then? My take on Defensive spear is that they need to be apparently soft enough to encourage the enemy to engage them (rather than just skirmishing or avoiding them) while in fact being tough enough to hang on until the more mobile or aggress...

Re: Spearmen
Can any army get lots (i.e. at least 16) bases of Armoured, Poor, Undrilled Defensive Spearmen? Armoured defensive spearmen aren't very common. But given that maintaining cohesion is so critical for spearmen, I really can't see why you would prefer poor armoured to average protected for the same po...

A combination of troops that can skirmish, preferably ones that can shoot as well, plus solid heavy foot like pikes or spearmen is the probably the best way to deal with knights. I resemble that remark, though I think the shooting is optional. My Later Visigoths (centre of defensive spear, flanks o...

Re: Flank Charge - Turning to face
A unit of 6 MF (Unit A) in single column charges an ememy unit of 3 wide and 2 deep MF (Unit B) in the flank. Unit B turns 2 bases (one behind the other) to face the chargers, leaving the remaining 4 bases facing in the original direction. The impact is fought. Q1 - Does Unit B suffer any penalty f...

Then people are too hung up on the +5 routed enemy bonus. Get rid of it. … Games that don't end in a rout ARE being won and lost, people are just too fixated on the Decisive Victory. Game that don't end in a rout haven't ended. Crediting the person who happens to be ahead on points when a game is d...

1 base width 4 elements deep of pike is a fighting formation. True, but difficult to realize. I haven't rules at hand, but I don't think pikes BG could be less than 8 bases at start. Most pike are in 8s or 12s, but there are a few 4s (e.g. mercenaries in WotR English, Swiss in Medieval Burgundian)....

As so often in FoG, the answer is in the turn sequence: intercepts move before evades, so the LF can't evade from the intercept. And intercepts can't contact enemy, except as a legal flank or rear charge on the BG being intercepted, so the auxiliaries have to stop short of the LF. The Auxiliaries c...

FWIW if I were to pick a fuller wording to cover this unusual one it would be: Orb can be formed from a formation 2 bases wide, or 1 base width if only 2 bases deep (and therefore a fighting formation and not a column). A contraction can be included in the move if outside a restricted area. 1 base ...

they cant intercept- you need to have a totally clear, straight ahead path to the chargers. Ok, I'll accept that, but can you point out a rule? As so often in FoG, the answer is in the turn sequence: intercepts move before evades, so the LF can't evade from the intercept. And intercepts can't conta...

A BG of 2 bases cannot form Orb as an orb is by definition 2 wide. But a BG with 2 bases can be 2 wide. 1 base faces forwards, 1 backwards. Nothing wrong with that is there? Yes - you turn at least 1/2 the ranks not at least 1/2 the bases. Fine. You have one rank, so you turn it; 1 is at least half...
