Re: Question about first move with USA

When I play as the Germans and the Allies contest St. Vith, I typically try to bypass it and kill the unsupplied units later. And as the Allies I'd rather counterattack a Turtle that has 3 VP of locations than one that has 6, which can happen if you leave the north with too few defenders . Interest...

Re: Question about first move with USA

Regarding point 1, in the past I have always made this move if the opportunity presented itself. However lately I've started wondering if this is the best thing to do, because when this has happened to me when playing as the Germans, to the best of my recollection I have always won. The problem is ...

Re: Rules clarification: elite infantry

Thanks for the clarification. I feel much happier now! I wasn't always convinced that I could trust the battle icons, but if you say they're correct then that's great :)

Re: Question about first move with USA

I was actually thinking of starting a similar thread a while back, complete with maps and everything. I thought it would be fun to run through all the possible starting moves and the various pros and cons. I've just not had time to do it with work being so busy. I think there are a whole lot more va...

Re: Rules clarification: elite infantry

Thanks for replying spacerumsfeld. I think you're quite likely right. I just wanted definitive clarification because it can make a huge difference to the best way to play the game. The combined -2 that comes from correctly combining armour and elite infantry is hugely important. With my (it seems) i...

Rules clarification: elite infantry

I've been playing the game pretty much since it came out and I've been wanting to get a clarification for a while regarding elite infantry. In the combat modifiers it states that if half of the defending force is elite infantry then you get the modifier. My question is: is this half of the entire de...

Re: Play balance

All good points. Regarding not knowing your enemies approach to the game, it is actually worse than you state, because a good German player creates a strategy based on the situation. For example, If the Allies prioritize Bastogne, you ignore it and throw everything but a covering force north, while...

Re: The many ways to lose as the Allies

This is an interesting thread! As I said in another thread, I think one of the hardest things for the allies is that you have to make critical decisions on the first day with no useful information on which to base them. There are certain 'best' moves to make as allies for each of the attack strategi...

Re: Play balance

Oh, and one other thing: the allies have so few armour units that switching to the offensive can be a really slow process. A canny axis player can slow the allied progress to a grind by taking advantage of the fact that infantry can only move 1 space into enemy territory. This can make it really dif...

Re: Play balance

I'm with Boone737 in that amongst experienced players the Axis almost invariably wins. Looking at some of the league and tourney results so far this seems to be borne out. I do win a lot of games as the Allies but usually only when auto-matching against what are by observation inexperienced or inter...

Re: Play balance

I've been reading this thread carefully and it's really interesting. I'm currently in the on-going tournament and I had one observation that I think might slightly invalidate findings from the tournament: because the tournament games are two-way, one game as axis and one as allies it changes the dyn...
