Warfare 2023

Post by grahambriggs »

Warfare 2023 will be held on the weekend of 11th and 12th November at the same venue as last year - Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre. Over the course of the weekend, to make managing traffic flow easier, all cars will enter the site via Gate F, postcode GU14 6TQ, following Government House Road and then Aerospace Boulevard. Traffic will then all leave by Gate A on each of the days.
For pedestrian access (Gate B) that is directly in front of the atrium entrance.

In terms of the Field of Glory competition this will be an open competition, any army from any of the three online army books. Tables will be 6 foot by 4 or thereabouts.

Points. This is a handicap competition, to level the playing field for less experienced players:

- Group A will have 750 points. These are the players who have appeared in the top 6 of the rankings in recent years. Paul Bartlett, Terry Shaw, Pete Dalby, Steve Murton, Dave Ruddock, Graham Briggs, David Bannister, Steve Brown, Phil Powell.
- Group B will have 800 points. These are the players who regularly appear high up the rankings, but not in the top 6: Paul Longmore, Dave Morrison, Martyn Simpson, David Fairhurst, John Patrick.
- Group C will have 850 points: any player not mentioned above.

All other aspects will remain the same: the usual scoring system, random first round draw where anyone can play anyone except club mates, Swiss chess thereafter (no clubmate matches in round 2 though)

Folks, I've just heard the very welcome news that Ferdi Akaltin is planning to join us at Warfare this year. It's been a considerable number of years since the Field of Glory competition at Warfare has had players from outside the UK attending.

This does, of course, raise the issue of what handicap group he should be in. I hadn't really considered this situation when posting the original handicaps - of course Ferdi does not have a ranking as yet in the UK (I think it needs a person to have taken part in a certain number of UK competitions). Having won Britcon - and I think never having lost to a UK player - he is clearly of the top calibre. Therefore I've decided that he should be put into the group A handicap of 750 points.

If we were fortunate enough to receive entries from other players without a UK ranking, then those players would be placed in Group C.

On another topic, I think it would be a good idea for us UK players to bring our playing cloths to the competition where possible - that should help with the look of the thing.

Could you please submit army lists to Steve Murton at s.murton596@btinternet.com by the end of Friday 27th October. Remember to check which points you will have under the handicap system (above).

Following the use of event provided dice at the Sarisbury Green event last weekend the general reaction seemed positive. So (courtesy of Steve Murton) we'll provide dice for the tables at Warfare. They'll be a bit bigger than the dice used last weekend, though Steve says he'll also bring along some small dice for those who prefer that.

We currently have 22 players entered:

Graham Briggs
Jordan Davies
Lynda Fairhurst
David Fairhurst
Ali Shaw
Terry Shaw
Pete Dalby
Steve Murton
Paul Bartlett
Steve Brown
John Patrick
David Morrison
Jon Akers
Phil Jelley
Bob Medcraft
Dave Ruddock
Peter Card
Andrew Kitcher
Martyn Brawn
Ferdi Akaltin from Germany
Steffen from Germany
Alexander from Germany
