Re: Storm Over Europe: Redux
Hello Generals,
I'd like to share a bit more about the 13th mission in 1940 Part 1 Redux.
This scenario is Antwerp and the Dyle Plan.
Earlier, I mentioned this scenario will feature the first new character, Oberfueher Tristan von Schnack. You may recall something about receiving a von Schnack hero or two in 1939. This relationship will be further explored later as the campaign plays out.

There is a lot to unpack here.
Let's start with the objectives. There is the standard capture key victory hexes followed by capturing secondary hexes. The next secondary objective calls for destroying the Belgian Army. Then there is an elite objective, destruction of the British Expeditionary Force and the French army.
You will face your first dilemma here. Oberfueher Schnack briefs you on the possibility of two rewards, one for destroying the enemy forces and one for possibly interpreting orders in a unique way. This will present a problem when attempting to capture Brussels as it is protected by two groups of French forces. Antwerp will face a similar dilemma but there are not as many British forces nearby.
You have a few ways of achieving these objectives and a skilled general, like yourself, will find a way to do it.
To help you, there are a few things. You are give a strong auxiliary force from the 6th Panzer Division, which can threaten Antwerp. You do have the option to deploy a few forces in the north to assist them.
The second option is the on start event, offering an additional 2,000 prestige and 2 (temporary) core slots for 2 Commendation Points. The reward increases to 3,000 and 3 for 3 CP and 4,000 and 4 slots for 4 CP.
There is also a reward from earlier in 1939 that may prove very beneficial here. The first mechanized bridge crossing unit.
Hope to see you on the battlefields soon, Generals!

Those are some heavy duty objectives. This looks spectacular.
Re: Storm Over Europe: Redux
Hello Generals,
Providing another brief update as the campaign continues to unfurl.
One of the things that I've always tried to incorporate into Redux is the sense of urgency in a player's actions. A long briefing detracts from that, especially when the enemy is launching a strong counter attack.
Yes, the player (you) need to know what is going on. However, the player is quite smart and can figure things out.
A strong counter attack brings me to the next scenario I want to highlight, the Battle of Arras.

Above is the original Battle of Arras. A pretty straight forward scenario of beating back the French and British counter attacks. There is no sense of danger. You know you are going to win.
Below is the new Battle of Arras, a much larger scenario. You stand between two forces, the entrapped British and French in the north. French forces are in the south, are they going to attack and link up with their brothers-in-arms?

This scenario, along with several others, should be a lot more epic in terms of scope and action.
Can't wait to see you on the battlefield!

Re: Storm Over Europe: Redux
Hello again Generals,
Today I'm going to share a few things about character development, campaign progress, and tokens.
Regarding character development. I personally often struggled with the characters from Axis Operations and then Storm Over Europe. I mostly left the characters as is, often fixing egregious mistakes. I mentioned earlier that 1940 Part 1 is introducing a new character Oberfuehrer Tristan von Schnack. He will be visiting with you a few times during the campaign.
I know some players may create their own fictional backgrounds on their general. As I write the story, briefings, and debriefings, I'm not trying to shoehorn a player's own choices. However, for the sake of the story it will happen. An example is here below:

This example of character development leads directly into campaign progress and tokens. As far as progress goes, I am about to release the first testing versions to my testers. This process should take about two months to iron out the kinks, errors, and balance issues I may have missed. I am still aiming for a late May to early June release window.
As the campaign unfolds, the player gets several different types of tokens. There are elite points, which are rewarded for finishing elite objectives; however these quickly transition in scenarios leading up to Dunkirk to Dunkirk Tokens (I know, very original name). The player will need to acquire a set amount of Dunkirk Tokens in order to commence Operation Sea Lion.

The last scenario, pictured in both of the photos today, presents a new token. These are Fuehrer Loyalty and Fuehrer Disloyalty tokens. These tokens will carry forward into the campaign offering scenario boosts and disadvantages. The exact rewards and negatives have not been fully fleshed out, yet, but may include reduced core slots, reduced prestige, loss of heroes.

Hans Landa himself is testing and overserving me? Damn, about time to put my shitty pants on!
Re: Storm Over Europe: Redux
Hello Generals,
Testing is progressing well and scenario design is nearly complete with one last mission left to finish. Today I want to share insights into how scenarios are designed. There is a lot of research involved reading articles, looking at historical maps, and brainstorming into how to implement this into hopefully a unique scenario.
Generally, scenarios start on a blank slate. Several scenarios in SCW, 1939, and 1940 Part 1 Redux started this way. The majority though were added on from existing work. An example below is a map called Lyon, that was supposed be included in 1940 Part 2, but is being included in 1940 Part 1 Redux.

A completed Lyon scenario, 31x37.

A now incomplete Lyon, 40x70.
A lot of the map now has a "blank slate" which I quickly fill with important landmarks, like rivers, major cities, and mountain ranges. These provide a great reference for the players and for me. I wish I could terrain an entire scenario in a sitting but life does not provide those luxuries.

Major outlines complete, Rhone River major cities like Marseilles and Toulon added.
After the outlines and placement of important landmarks are complete, I typically divide the map into sections and work on it from there. Below are three screenshots of a now fully terrained scenario.

With the terrain work completed, comes implementing the scenario design. This scenario as mentioned (and seen) features Toulon. Yes, the Germans never moved this far south until November 1942. This scenario is presenting an alternative history option of attempting to capture part of the French Navy.
How will the player achieve it? Well, it will be an interesting way of not pissing off the French yet still achieving your goal of capturing the French Navy.

Re: Storm Over Europe: Redux
Greetings Generals,
I wanted to share with you an exciting update that will affect all of the Storm Over Europe campaigns (including Spanish Civil War and 1939). You will not have to replay SCW and 1939.
There have been several new units introduced into the campaign, including:
Do 17F1
BV 138
Ju 86R1
Ju 388L
Over all, these planes along with several others have been introduced and reworked into better recon planes. There are 3 categories of recon planes, small, medium, and heavy.

In the middle of the fighter-craft planes, is the FW190, unlabeled.
A player will be able to deploy up to 3 small recon planes at no slot cost. These planes have been adjusted in the following ways: 1) They have no need to rebase. 2) Their move-per-turn has been reduced. 3) They have little to no defenses. 4) Their spotting range has been decreased.
A player will be able to deploy up to 1 medium recon plane at a reduced cost (1 core slot). These planes will need to rebase every turn but have been given Fast Rebase. They do have an increased range compared to smaller planes and are more than capable of defending themselves and attacking in a pinch.
A player will be able to deploy up to 1 heavy recon plane at a reduced cost (2 core slots). These planes will also need to rebase every turn and do not have Fast Rebase. However, these planes will feature the longest movement speed and highest spotting range.
It is hoped the increase in recon planes will allow players to better think their tactics by providing them more information.
Can't wait to see you on the ground and air!

Re: Storm Over Europe: Redux
thanks. misunderstood. great realistic unit addition upgrade. remember the air recon scene in the movie "Battle of the Bulge" with Henry Fonda taking pictures with a big box camera out of the side of a single engine recon plane.

Re: Storm Over Europe: Redux
just completed SOE The 39 Redux! couple of fun Questions? Which Plane group did you choose? I went with the FW Falke. I did not acquire any recon. Tanks I acquired the IV E's and took the HC's offer over the Verdeja's. main reason as my Verdeja's got beat up during the 39 and I only have 6 left in inventory. your thoughts?

You need more testers? would i be able to help out
Re: Storm Over Europe: Redux
I believe I went for the Pz IV'Es which also provide bridging units, which will be important for 1940 Part 1.scorehouse wrote: ↑Mon Mar 31, 2025 8:58 pm just completed SOE The 39 Redux! couple of fun Questions?
