Army List Questions

Post by Mav01 »

Looking through the army list has given me questions.

The late Sweden army list has scandinavian foot, a mixed unit of halberdiers and crossbowmen.
Did separate units of halberdiers or massed crossbowmen not exist in the late medieval Sweden army?

The late Polish army list have a mixed unit of knights and crossbow cavalry and a mixed unit of
cavalry lancers and crossbow cavalry. Did units of only knights or cavalry lancers not
exist in the late medieval Polish army?

Did Baltic Tribes not use light cavalry?

Did the Italian late armies not have some similar infantry to Castilian rodeleros?

Did the English late armies not have raw defensive spearmen?

Did the Free Canton not use peasants in their armies?

Why do the Taborite Hussites have so few different units compared to the Utraquist Hussites?

Did the Granadine 1232-1319 Army have camel lancers?

Why do the Georgian Armoured noble lancers from 1118-1299 look different from the 1008-1117 list?

Did the Arab (Syria/Iraq) army not use Turcoman Cavalry in its later years?

Did the Irish 1131-1259 Army not have light cavalry?

Did the Welsh 1050-1099 Army not have light cavalry?

Did the late armies of the iberian peninsula only use bombards?

There are no massed handgunners or light cavalry handgunners, did they only begin to exist in
renaissance warfare?

Thank you for any reply.

You can look into Field of Glory tabletop wargame rules for some further army list details: https://www.slitherine.com/game/field-of-glory-ii (see the downloads section). One source widely used in making of FoG2 are Ian Heath's books on Armies of Feudal Europe, Middle Ages, and Crusades which may offer further insight.

Generally you will be better off asking why a certain unit is present in some list despite absence of evidence or showing evidence pointing to the existence of an absent unit/use. Asking someone to poduce the evidence for the non-existence of something is a pretty laborious task since it would essentially mean going through all the source material to confirm that something is indeed not mentioned.

Pointing out clear logical fallacies in army lists has resulted in some minor revisions but that has been rare in FoG2A/M development. On the other hand, some army lists have had huge overhauls (e.g. Thracians, Indians) based on in depth research presented by the community.
