Defeats is an understatement.... first game was a lesson in how to swallow an entire flank in one bite, and the second was lesson in perfect artillery

Div C
DIVM (Minoan) defeats Infinitude (Mitanni): 47-8
Score doesn't reflect the reality of the battle, that was quite tied-in till a couple of turns ago where lady luck smiled upon the Minoan army and was able to break through the mitanni lines both in the center and the right flank with the war chariots. Good game.

Division E
principeromanes (Byzantine 988-1041 AD) defeats Ironclad (Georgian 1008-1049 AD) 66-48
The Byzantine army faced a mass of Georgian lancers, supported in the centre by massed archers and shieldwalls. Meanwhile, the Byzantine cavalry (mostly Tagmatic lancers and archers supported by a few horse archers) was also split onto two flanks with some token skoutatoi holding the enclosures in the centre. The cavalry quickly clashed on the flanks, with the embedded Byzantine archers managing to secure a disruption or two before the melee started while staying sufficiently out of range of the massed Georgian bows to avoid any disruptions of our own.
Being slightly outnumbered and certainly outclassed on cavalry, the Byzantines hoped to use the horse archers to threaten flanks. It almost worked, but in the end the horse archers proved more effective in drawing unengaged Georgian lancers away from the main battle, preventing them from taking advantage of potential flanking opportunities. This drew off enough Georgian cavalry to provide a slight edge to the Byzantines in the cavalry battle, despite the inevitable loss of horse archers.
Meanwhile, the two units of skoutatoi in the centre were completely outmatched by the far more numerous Georgian infantry. They nonetheless managed to hold on long enough to ensure the Georgian infantry could not play a role in the cavalry battle. The bowman held out better than I expected when my victorious cavalry finally got to them, but a few units of victorious Byzantine cavalry were able to make effective work of the Georgian infantry.
Thanks for a good game. This really was a fun cavalry clash in nice open terrain – exactly what I wanted for this match.

principeromanes (Georgian 1008-1049 AD) defeats Ironclad (Byzantine 988-1041 AD) 56-13
The Georgian army has the decided advantage in this matchup.
Similar to the mirror, I brought a few massed archers and shieldwalls to support my Georgian lancers. The Byzantines anchored each flank around an elite Kilbanophoroi, with some supporting lancers and lights. The Byzantine army also has some skoutatoi in the enclosure.
I first tried to push my light cavalry around the a small copse of trees (just off the left hand side of the image) to get into the Byzantine rear. I got one light cavalry around, but at the cost of the other three involved in the operation. It was still worthwhile, as it drew significant missile fire from the Byzantine lights and pulled them away from the main action. And I even managed to catch and run down a light archer, so it really was worthwhile. That light horse was certainly overly enthusiastic in its pursuit and was caught by a Byzantine lancer, but it then led that Byzantine lancer on a pursuit all the way to the edge of the map, effectively taking it completely out of the battle. So overall a very successful flanking maneuver.
Meanwhile, I shifted my battle line to concentrate on my right flank. The maneuverable cavalry army made this relatively easy, and the infantry even managed to almost keep up. The Byzantines had a harder time concentrating because of the enclosure splitting their flanks, so I was able to effectively concentrate my forces to overwhelm the Byzantine left flank, despite its efforts to fall back and some frankly disastrous results on the initial charge (a fragmented and disrupted unit in the first 4 charges to pin the Byzantine line in place, despite even odds).
Again, a very fast-paced and enjoyable battle. Thanks for the game!

Div E
Karvon's Parthians defeated Bodhran's Bithynians's 51-16.
The field was scattered with hills with a rather large ridge dominating the center and left sectors of the Bithynians' side. In addition, a medium-sized forest anchored the ridge against that edge. We suspected that position would be where we'd find the bulk of the enemy, but other hills, woods and a marsh along their front offered other defensive possiblities as well.
We deployed roughly four equal commands of mixed horse, made up of light and heavy archers and supporting cataphracts. We had small light foot division to help scout woods and marshes. We placed two commands on our left, which was the most open ground, one in the center and one on the right.
We didn't see much of the Bithynians initially, as they were mostly behind the ridge facing our center and right. They had a large number of medium foot, a division of superior warbands, and a handful of horse, screened by some light foot.
We pushed forward all along the front with our lights probing to establish the exact whereabouts of the enemy. The Bithynians shifted to their left and began taking up positions along the ridge and in the woods. Their horse covered their refused right flank. We pushed forward as quickly as possible with our left wing, moving deep to envelop the enemy right, while our center and right commands moved up to effective skirmish range and began showering the more vulnerable foot with arrows. Our cataphracts moved up to within supporting range, should any of the enemy foot charge out of their positions in attempt to drive off our horse archers.
It was a bit of slow process, but eventually we had the Bithynian's surrounded and steadily rained arrows until units broke. As gaps appeared we flanked and finished off units with our cataphracts or charged and broke fragmented units with our horse archers. We lost a few pursuing units which got surrounded by enemy reserves, but finally the Bithynians had enough and the army broke.
