One reason I think the theme event is interesting is that it combines some features of the team tournaments, everyone is participating in a group goal which is hopefully a bit friendlier to new people/players than the usual more open tournament event. At the same time it will have everyone playing three pretty "straight up" games of FoG against different people than they usually play so if you are just there for the game you get that as well. This format is also a lot friendlier to people that want to play a game or two but don't want to commit the whole day (especially if they can come in pairs) to FoG.
If this theme/semi-team format works I think it could be an interesting addition to Historicon and differentiate it a bit from more traditional tournament events in the US.

I will take an even number of 25mm players and mix their games in--somehow--with the overall theme. So long as there are at least 4 25mm players, that is. Better still if there are 6, evenly divided between steppe and civilized. C'mon, you 25mm players, you know who you are. Organize yourselves!footslogger wrote:Does anyone plan doing 25s in the theme? Re: Historicon 2010 FoG events
Marc, I note the pre-1092 Seljuks are allowed in the Steppe armies when none of their opponents is allowed for the Settled armies (with the possible exception of the Georgians). No post 1042 Nikephorean Byzantines, no Fatimids, no Ghaznavids, no Buyids (Dailami Dynasties), all enemies of the early Seljuks in their steppe period show up. I know I can run Thematics but I'm a Nikephorian guy at heart.babyshark wrote:Historicon will be held July 8-12, 2010 in Valley Forge, PA. Come join the fun! The following is the PEL listing. Somehow, I knew that you would raise up with a comment about the Byzantines.

The answer is that I had to do a great deal of arbitrary cutting-off in order to have any limits to the listed armies. I acknowledge that this has resulted in an injustice to the Nikephorian Byzantines, and undoubtedly to other armies as well. I am doing my best to be able to live with myself; with the help and support of my wargaming friends I think I can get through this difficult episode.

More seriously, as I said, I had to exclude some armies. There are already a large number of choices on the civilized side; adding all the armies you mentioned would not--in my judgment--have improved the event.

Re: Historicon 2010 FoG events
OK, trying to make your life even more difficult, how about this. Why do you include the Early Byzantines? They end at 550AD, eight years before the sole Steppe army attack of the Early Bulgars. And the Avars never attacked them until after that date either. So they were never invaded by Steppe armies.

I had the notion in my head that the Early Byz did fight the Early Bulgars, at least, which is why I concluded them.

It's strictly a date issue. The authors end the early Byzantine list at 550AD. The Bulgar attack happened in 558AD, so under the time period of the Maurikian Byzantine army which definitely belongs on the list. Should be an easy fix to drop the Eary Byzantines and substitute post 1042 late Nikephorians.

Right-o. You are going to have 3 25mm blokes from Chicago for the Satuday event. (We shall beat each other to find who plays which army). We are going to have to look at the thursday event; We would like to play, but we're not sure how it will interact with the traveling.babyshark wrote:Historicon will be held July 8-12, 2010 in Valley Forge, PA. Sweet. Assuming that most of the usual suspect show up the 25mm Open will be a go.emptied wrote: Right-o. You are going to have 3 25mm blokes from Chicago for the Satuday event. Assuming further that there is not a misunderstanding over which event happens on which date . . . . The Steppes v. Civilization event is Friday, the Open is Saturday. You may certainly bring Ming or Song to the Open if you choose.

Based on presently available information, I believe that 25mm will be viable on all three days. However, this is subject to change w/o notice, as even a couple players bowing out at the last minute can have a marked effect with the smaller player pool in 25mm. As usual, I recommend bringing an army for 15mm as well, just in case.
