Detached Shot: Doesn't Give Protection??

Post by Blathergut »

If I detach shot from mixed BGs, does it not give protection to adj. horse like commanded shot?

Yes, I think it is to get around people detaching shot and using them as commanded shot when their armies historically did not.
One of the many issues that I had with another set of rennaisance rules that evovled from an ancient medieval set.

Confirmed. Page 126 'when troops are designated in our companion army list books as "commanded shot" they can give to and recieve "protection" from (mounted)'. Being commanded shot costs 1 more - see P189.

This does not include detached or commanded out shot.

Why would you want to detach out shot as it cost 1 point extra because when you create the army it initally starts as protected and since your army is already created before terrain placement that is points lost.

1. Detach 4 bases of superior shot from two BGs of superior pike/shot. Gives NMA a nice BG of shot for rough terrain.
2. The two BGs of pike/shot form up into an 8 base BG which will need 3 hits to cause cohesion testing.

Might also want to do it as a Forlorn Hope in the event that you need the extra 5 inches, as it were.

Check the army list notes at the top, for the Roylalist it states that the commanded out shot is not the same as command shot in the rules. So my detached boys don't count as commanded shot for protection purposes.

But you can have up to 4 commanded shot bases. (Optional Troops)
