A Case for Upgrades

I have posted a similar response on 2-4 other occasions, and I will make this my final one. Having spent time as a United States Army Infantry Officer, and some of that with a Special Forces unit, I do not understand the logic of upgrading a battle tested unit costing as much as buying a brand new unit. I do understand Slitherine's reluctance to allow players to upgrade brand new units to veteran status in an unrealistic time frame, and cost. However, I think it is also not unrealistic to allow a combat tested unit to upgrade to new equipment for a cheaper cost than getting a brand new unit. Off the top of my head, perhaps a 50% cost reduction for upgrading veteran units of the same class, (perhaps based on experience points), would be a way of discouraging premature and too cheap advancements would be the way to go. As it is, I think the way it stands is for gameplay purposes and has very little to do with 'realistic/historic approach to the game genre. I haven't seen many official responses about this particular concern, which is why I am making my opinion known one more time. Thanks for opening the question one last time...

I agree with Orchist on this... as someone with previous PG experience this just feels wrong. While it certainly isn't a game breaker, it does cause some issues (such as trying to get all units upgraded from the Sea Lion 42 scenario to the East Coast USA scenario, the costs are too prohibitive in the game's current setting). If not addressed in the initial release, I hope it gets some consideration in future expansions.

Balance of this nature is a very difficult topic because it affects so many aspects of the game. Re-Balanced unit stats may cause previously 'balanced' unit prices to become unbalanced, and visa versa. The amount of prestige the campaign gives to the player and the attrition a campaign takes on a player's forces are both directly involved when figuring out matters of unit price and upgrade costs, but rest assured all of these items are being worked on. Although it may appear the work is slow; that's only because we're looking to find the best balance for all of these strongly integrated components to fit together in a fun and engaging game.
