how do you stop elite swiss keils?

Post by urbanbunny1 »

So,

I've played a couple of FoGR comps and had the Swiss stomp me pretty hard.

how do you beat them?

I've been playing with 30 years later germans and haven't had much luck.

artillery worked up to a point, but my last opponent wouldn't roll that final death roll to break his Keil. :-(

This is similar to my problem with Deadtorius'sss early Tilly tercios. In the end, they probably can't be beat. But in our last battle, I had 16 BGs to his 10. I would try to tangle the big boys up and delay/hold as long as possible, while concentrating on flanks and other portions of the army, more susceptible to death.

Try using your light horse and dragoons to keep him from double moves. You can shoot him every turn and when he charges bugger off, then come back and do it again. I have found my LH very effective in FOGR, much more so than in the ancient period. Gotta love all those gunpowder weapons.
Not sure if it will help a lot but what about using FF's, puts him down a POA for impact and melee, he has to stop 1 MU out before he can charge so you get 2 extra shots at him to whittle his numbers down. Never tried them myself yet but it is a thought.
Also you might try to stick in a lot of terrain on table, especially the difficult stuff, it seems to have worked well on Blatherguts numerically superior armies.

Other than that, a napalm strike perhaps.... or see if you can find the Davinci list and try adding in his tanks and flying machines

You have to work on the terrain to slow down them and shot shot shot ;)

At Britcon, I fought a Swiss army which had 3 units each of 16 elite armoured foot and shot away two of them with my Hapsburg Austrians. I dived into terrain and then encircled them. At one point I think I had about 24 bases of shot plus 4 battalion guns firing at each Keill.
I also manouvred cavalry round the rear of each Keill but the Swiss army broke before I could charge them in.

Try multiple superior Spanish colonela's with the S&B men behind the arquebus.

I do like the idea about the Davinci tank. wonder if that will be allowed a future expansion.

guess I need more cav and dragoons.

time to go shopping!

many years ago someone actually released a miniatures game based on Davinci's weapons. I often think it would have been a neat addition to FOG R to have included such a list. Oh well, I still have my Tercios
