Rivers should be highlighted more prominently in colour (bright blue, for instance) so that the gamer is able to plan his river crossings. As it is now, the river has a very faded look and blends in too much with the background colour. Maybe objectives can be coloured very prominently also, especially airfields as they are very hard to discern from the Strategic Screen.

This would be a very welcome enhancement for the strategic map (F5), as it would not only greatly improve the visibility of the hex fields important for planing, but would also fit with the more abstract purpose of the strategic map (compared to the tactical map). And i also like the look. :)

But for the tactical map i feel it would clash with the map if it would be always on, as it looks too modern/high-tec compared to the vintage battlefield (map hex-fields and units) and would distract from it.

Even so, it might still fit with the tactical map if it was used as some sort of 'tactical-overlay', which would only be displayed as long as a certain (short-cut) key is pressed, and vanish as soon as the key is being released. This tactical-overlay could than also include tactical symbols for the 'discerning' players, for axis campaign the WW2-Germany symbols or universal ones e.g. NATO or Warsaw Pact, and for an Allied campaign WW2-allied ones or universal ones again. If adding all those symbols would be to much work for not enough gain, it could also be a possibility to 'just' add the tactical overlay with the ability to load and display symbols (symbol-set selectable by player, by default based on the side the player has choosen), and leave it to the comunity to create those.

I think the strategic map could do with some enhancements. Rivers are barely noticeable and minor towns and airfields are visually indistinguishable. It and the casualty screen need a bit more work

I like that idea. But only for the strategic map.

Excellent idea on an overlay shortcut key! I like that idea very much! It would be easier for the player to decide where he wants to move his forces especially during the deployment phase. I rather spend the time planning moves in-game instead of having to snap screenshots, stitch them together, and having to circle and mark objectives and/or obstacles. If they could include this in the GUI, it would be great.
