Saxons In Scotland ,Pictish charging cavalry

Post by Switzer »

Hi

Recently been researching picts ,scots etc ....
After reading the Picts and Scots at war
what seems to come across about the saxons
in Manau south scotland is
They were mounted javelin throwing cavalry
based on the available evidence.
Bit unlike the saxons elsewhere.
The saxon cavalry seem to throw javelins
but the pict unarmoured cavalry seem to
charge (its the way they hold their spears).
Bit unlike my usual picture of an army.
So charging wave of pict nobles fights
saxon cavalry throwing javelins.
Then saxon cavalry hits the pict spear block
- bounces off pursued by pict cavalry.
.
I suggest a separate Saxon list for scotland -
with armour wearing cavalry throwing javelins.
Perhaps no infantry at all - bit like a gododdin era
mounted warband.
Picts with charging unarmoured cavalry
backed by a spear block .

Don t know if that helps but it fits the evidence
described in this book.

Antioch era Crusaders

Post by Switzer »

Another interesting army is the one that broke the siege of
antioch .
By this time the knights were on foot - but hardened and
well disciplined .
Effectively a sword carrying infantry force very highly motivated
with a minimal amount of armoured cavaly and crossbows.
Completely different to the Doryleaum force due to lack
of mounts.

Have you seen this film http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Suriyothai ? It's outside the period of FoG but not by much and firearms are still not widespread. Costumes and heraldry are gorgeous.

Has there been discussion about the byzantine nicepohorians ?
I was wondering how different it would from the Theme army ( in FOG ) and it seems that it will not be officially published for some time as I have seen no book about that period :-(

Its in the 6th (or 7th) army list book - no idea when it will be published though, perhaps half way through 2008.

nikgaukroger wrote:As for charging camelry armies you will probably find them in a Christian Nubian army but don't expect them to be too good
Argh Nik, you are going to savage them again!

Actually I am not quite sure how effective they will be. Have you run any yet? I don't really know how they charging camels of say Tauregs would get handled in FoG, I don't know if you can justify them lancers or swordsmen. As you posted somewhere light spear undrilled, poor unprotected. Even average and protected. Need to check which camels get bows. Midanite obviously. Maybe some camels will be swordsmen that could give them the ability to rough up some cavalry. Now the cataphract camels may be interesting.

Camelry, Protected, Average/Poor, Undrilled, Light Spear

Some earlier Arab camelry get bow and swordsmen (the ones that the Seleukids can have for example) but are Poor and Unprotected. The catafract camels in the Hatrene ally for Parthians on the other hand are rather good :o

No Tuareg list done to date.

I see that there is an Italian Lombard list in one of the upcoming books. Does this list include the Franks in Italy as the DBM list does, and if not would my Carolingians be a plausible morph for the Lombards? Also are the pre-774 Lombards less of a 'dog' than they are in DBM?

What kind of classification will Mycenaean chariots and pikemen have? Mycenaean chariots just had a driver and a spearmen on it, so probably light chariot w/ a light spear POA? The pikemen I can understand if you make either unprotected or protected defensive spearmen as they were just support troops really.

We're currently looking at HCh for the Mykenaians - based on their apparant "close combat" approach rather than the "horse archer" approach of the maryannu style chariotry.

Spearmen with the large shields will be Protected.

I can certainly understand if you classify them as HCh since they weren't too fond of evading like LCh do, and were errr heroic!

My favourite armies:

Romans all the way through kingdom, republic and empire. I also have plenty of armies as historical opponents for them: Etrurians, Carthaginians, Celts, Spanish, Parthian, Later Successors.

T'ang Chinese + their enemies.

Hundred Years War English and French, plus Wars of the Roses.

I would also like to see Ghurids done as an official army list, if not in a book then at least posted as an officially approved list on this website. I have a Ghurid army painted up which I use occasionally. The manpowered rolling pavise is cute!

Come to think of it, there are quite a few 'dog' armies in DBM that might be worth doing a FoG list for: how about Aztecs and their enemies?

We will be doing and Aztec list (plus enemies) - but I suspect it will be in one of the Later books - There aren't many themed armies to put with them, so it may be in a book with other isolated armies.

Given that players will have the rationale behind weapon/armour classification, and the points values of each troop type, weapon, armour, training etc it would be relatively easy for someone to put together a list based upon their own information.
If you do, please feel free to post your lists here. We welcome any input when we're putting together the 'offical' army list books.

I'd certainly be interested in seeing an Aztec list - I don't know much about them (yet!), but I remember how 'pretty' they looked back in the days of 6th.

Well I've got the army as well so I'm sure there will be a list at some time

However, in the short term I've wondered about using them as a Dailami army as a way of getting them into use and that is probably the nearest list to what the Ghurids should be. Doesn't quite cope with the karwah, of course, but it crossed my mind that you could use units without as Protected and the units with as Armoured - with a bit of base fudging that is

The Buwayhids can have ghilman and jumbos so that fits as well.

Not exact but would get the figures on the table 8)

Yes thanks, I have a copy in both languages. Also have several others including the first two parts of the trilogy currently being filmed. Unfortuately they are too new to even have english sub-titles.

Presumably with the Dendra panoply in mind?
I feel that by the LH111 they should be classed as similar to Gaulish or British chariots - compare Caesar's description with Homer....
