Panzer Corps, date of Steam availability?

Post by Hansolo88 »

Hi guys, has anyone heard further about when Panzer Corps will be available on Steam? I'm looking at potential purchases for both myself and a friend. I know the Greenlight was a success and I had thought it would be there by now but it is still not available as of today.

Please don't make this game available on steam. Keep it as is on your site.

Halder, why in the world would you not want the game available on Steam? Why would you not want the increased visibility and sales for what we both know to be a fantastic and under-appreciated game? I just don't understand the sentiment. I'm sure Steam sales are not as profitable as direct sales and that there are other complications in working with Valve but overall it seems it could only be a benefit to the game.

I already own the game and quite a few expansions, having purchased them through Matrix Games, and I would hope that keys would be available to prior owners if the game went onto Steam. But even if that wasn't the case I would honestly consider re-buying some or all of them on Steam, both to support the game and to have it available on my game management software of choice. It would also make it easier to recommend the game to friends who are avid Steam fans.

I totally understand that not everyone loves Steam for a lot of valid reasons, but personally I am to the point where I rarely buy games that aren't on Steam anymore and so I would be disappointed if Panzer Corps never made it in after I worked hard to support the Green Light process, even posting on my blog to try to drum up extra votes.

I'm like Halder, I'm not a big fan of Steam either. It's fine with me if the developers prefer Steam instead, it just means I'll stick to the non-Steam version, which will keep me busy for a long, long time anyway.

Seems nobody knows, but I would like to know this as well. Some of my buddies are explicitly waiting for the Steam version, I couldn't convince them to buy here.

And sorry, jdm, your answer is quite off.

Well, I think we are talking about two different things. Not wanting to play the game via Steam yourself is one thing. Not wanting ANYONE to have the game available via Steam is something else entirely.

I understand why people choose not to use Steam personally, I don't understand the attitude that no one should be able to play the game on Steam because they don't like it. Unless you can explain to me why having the game on Steam is bad for the game itself and/or it's community. It seems to me a win win, buy it on Steam if you want, don't if you don't want to. Not saying this is your opinion necessarily, but I've seen it elsewhere.

I'd LOVE to see this game on steam, I now buy and play all my Linux games on Steam, I'm not a serious game head, I play very rarely since I don't have that much time between work and the kids but I own almost every humble bundle release (I always pay above the average and I have not even played more than half of them but I do this to support Linux gaming), I appreciate the convenience of steam, I also like that my games are kept up to date for me and held centrally, ready for download. I've purchased Alpha Centauri over 3 times (twice for the Loki linux version) and when I update my version of Linux it always breaks and it take me a considerable amount of time to get it working again so I'm no longer that keen on keeping a box set on hand or separate download link (for a company that may go bust like Loki) for my games.

This game will sell like crazy on Steam. There is nothing like it, and it is a great beginners wargame

I buy my games almost exclusively from Steam -- with Slitherine-published games being a rare exception.

We haven't set a date yet but are working on it. We will not move to Steam - Steam will just be an alternative way to get it so there isn't anything to fear if you don't like Steam.

I guess people are misunderstanding that selling a game on Steam means you can't play it again without using Steam.

Steam is just ONE of the many online distribution channels out there. Many Steam games are sold also on other channels, for example Larian Studios sells their games on Steam, GOG.com, and their own store Larian Vault. You don't need to have Steam installed in order to install and play the GOG or Laurian Vault version. In fact, I don't even remember a single so called "Steam exclusive" game anywhere, which is unlike say, EA's Origin, in which all games there are sold ONLY through Origin, and requires your PC to be constant online to play.

In short, no need to worry about selling the game on Steam at all, it will not bring any negative impacts on the version sold here on Slitherine (in fact it will only bring POSITIVE impacts: more people playing the game = more revenue and support = better game development!).
