Considering jumping back in
I glossed over a couple of the latest threads - some balance issues, declarations of intent to stop playing the game, balance complaints. Looks familiar compared to the situation two years ago, but what do I know.
So my question is - is this a good time to come back to the game? How active is the community?

Look, for example, in the Leagues & Tournaments & Seeking Opponents section...

Re: Considering jumping back in
The forum is pretty lifeless and the game is probably the same as it was a couple of years ago, but there's enough people playing that you won't have any trouble finding a multiplayer opponent.
There are only a few small niggly problems with the game, the one that comes up most often probably being the cost-free rear-rank mixed units, which is mostly confined to the Decline and Fall army book. Grumbles drag on as these issues still haven't been fixed, years after being noted. Still, I wouldn't let that dissuade you from getting back into the game as, for the most part, it's a solid multiplayer tactical game.

Thanks. I think I'll jump in then, I'd like some tactical, turn based war-game that's not set in the WWII period, as much as I like it.the_iron_duke wrote:The forum is pretty lifeless and the game is probably the same as it was a couple of years ago, but there's enough people playing that you won't have any trouble finding a multiplayer opponent.

I wouldn't say it's lifeless at all. There's a great tourney going on right now, FoG digital league. Check out the League, Tournaments etc-section.
There's a complete rewrite of the game coming, hopefully before too long. After that I guess new addons and updates will come.

Re: Considering jumping back in
The dice can be pretty annoying at times and more so if it's a comp game but just overlook those flaws and this games a pure gem.I just wish i'd come across it a lot earlier than i did.
Molon labe!

Re: Considering jumping back in
Jumping back in as well....is version 1.81 the most recent non-beta that everyone is using? if not can you point me in the direction to the download with crayon and large signs if possible? Or is the auto update working again?
Re: Considering jumping back in
Turns out 1.8.1 is at Matrix. http://matrixgames.com/products/378/downloads/
I found my digital FoG and saves on backup and have some early lists.
Important question: If I buy more digital army lists, will those carry over to the coming v2.0 of FOG without extra charge, or with an extra charge, or a fresh expenditure? FOG Digital is expensive, and I have a limited budget.
Also, things don't seem to be installing correctly (Storm not showing up in DAG) - is the order 1.01, then 1.81, then the armies in a particular order, or 1.01, then armies, then 1.81?
(The army installers have different version numbers on them)
Also, is the beta well worthwhile? Seems to have been going on a long time. Or best to wait for the release?

There are two separate developments in the pipeline. The first one is the transfer of the existing game to a new coding (Unity) - this will be free and all your expansion packs will work OK. The second step will be the introduction of FOG 2.0. We have not had much information about that yet but the general expectation is that we will have to pay again for the core game. Whether we will have to pay again for all the army packs that we have is a good question - my own feeling is that we will not. I might be completely wrong though.
On the beta, I would just wait for the release. Again this is just a personal view.

If you fancy some competitive play, I am recruiting for the FOG Digital League which starts on June 1st. Might you be interested?

Re: Considering jumping back in
Thanks for the information. Paulo responded quickly. It is quite useful to just enter in the serials rather than running the original ROR and SOA exes with their version mismatch. He also expects that the army list modules will be upgraded for free with 2.0. I do expect to pay for 2.0, though I hope there is some patronage discount for those with version 1.
Trying to pick which modules to buy - at $20 each it is not a trivial decision. ETE seems nicely paired with the SOA era. Most of the Wolves are I think likely to be less fun on the screen than they are on the tabletop, likewise LT (I've done a pound of Romans vs. a few pounds of barbs frequently). Dragons, Chariots and Pre-Columbians are somewhere down the pipeline. The others currently on offer are intriguing. Any strong suggestions?
Will take a look at the digital league forum.
Cheers

Immortal Fire is fantastic value; and I like Storm of Arrows very much too. These are the best two, in my opinion.MikeK wrote:Trying to pick which modules to buy - at $20 each it is not a trivial decision. ETE seems nicely paired with the SOA era.
