Unit Levels and Upgrades

Post by Fallshcirmjaeger »

This is confusing me....when I click the Upgrade button I see my units at various levels. Corps are 3/3 for example. What does this mean?

Also, when Upgrades are available I have no way of knowing what they are. So when my Corps shows 3/4, which upgrade are they missing? Viewing the Labs doesnt seem to tell me anything. I could just be dense....maybe this isnt even what those numbers mean....I dunno....do another turn already!

Another thing. I would like to be able to pick and choose which upgrades get applied to which units. Currently, it is feast or famine - you take all available upgrades or none. For example, I have no interest in applying an ASW upgrade to my TacBomber, but I would like to apply a Close Air Support upgrade. Cannot do. All or none. I know this is a limited option since many upgrades only apply to specific unit types, but there are some overlapping upgrades that apply to several. It is in these areas that I would like a little more flexibility. Create a wee bit more of a combined arms approach.

Lastly, what do the Difficulty numbers represent?

Thanks in advance to any who can help me out here!

It means the technology level for that unuit type is currently at technology level 3 and the unit itself is also at technology level 3

Lok at the unit and then look at the labs for that type of unit. Note that one item in the lab has reached 4 but youre unit is still at 3. It costs points to upgrade. if youre unit has done nothing so far this turn and yoyu have the points available you can now upgrade.

It's important to understand that the number you read is the total of technology areas affecting the unit. E. g. if an armor unit has the number 4 it doesn't mean it has tech level 4 in armor techs. It means the sum of all areas (blitzkrieg, armor, antitank and organization) equals 4. Since Germany starts with organization level 3 it means no German units will have a number less than 3. So with a number 4 armor unit it means the Germans have achieved tech 1 in either blitzkrieg, armor or antitank). Theoretically it could have achieved tech 4 in organization, but it's not likely since it advances so slowly.

All units are affected by organization (comes from the General tech group). In addition units are usually affected only from the group the unit belongs to (corps and motorized from the Infantry group etc.), but there are exceptions. Some air techs affect CV's in addition to air units. The ASW tech under the Naval group affects air units in addition to naval units. The radar tech under the General group affects naval units in addition to cities, capitals, fortresses and ports.

It's it's not unlikely to see e. g. strat bombers have a total of tech 20 or higher late in the game. That doesn't mean it has tech 20 in air. It simply means the sum of organization + dogfight + close air support + strategic operations + ASW + radar is 20 or higher.

Remember also that units don't get a tech advance at each tech level in a particular area. E. g. only fighters get a tech advance at each dogfight level. Tac bomber, strat bombers and CV's only get dogfight advances at some of these levels.

After playing awhile you learn which techs are the important ones for each unit type and you make sure you upgrade when you receive these important techs. E. g. tac bombers get at tech 2 close air support +1 naval attack. You don't upgrade your tac bombers for that bonus unless you're heavily involved in attacking enemy naval units. But the strategic operations tech 1 where you get +3 attack range is VERY important to receive as quickly as possible for the fighters and tac bombers in addition to the obvious strat bomber. But you may decide to wait a few turns to upgrade the fighters when you get this tech if e. g. the dogfight tech is at 75-80% or higher. Then you get the dogfight increase as well when you upgrade.

I think it's not smart to upgrade units as quickly as you get certain techs. That's very expensive over time and you can't afford to do it if you want new units as well. I therefore only upgrade units when I really need the tech advances I can get from the upgrade. If I expect the units to not be active for some turns, e. g. on the eastern front during the Winter, then I delay the upgrades hoping I get some other techs as well included when I upgrade.

Since oil is a big issue for Germany I e. g. decided to NOT upgrade the German armor prior to Barbarossa. The reason was that blitzkrieg tech 1 gave a +1 oil consumption. So my armor units spent 1 oil less for all of 1941 and that helped the oil budget a lot. I did the same with the fighters as well. I didn't get the upgrades because one dogfight tech increased the oil consumption by 1. I could do this in 1941 because the Russians retreated as fast as possible so I didn't have to fight their good units. If they had remained where they were and fought then I would have needed the extra techs. But I upgraded my armor and air units when the Winter
came because I expected the Russians to counter attack.

So you upgrade when you need the techs to get better odds when you fight, not when you don't expect any fighting.

Thank you Stauffenberg. Very good.

The info screen at the start of your turn also tells you when you have achieved an upgrade, as well as what the upgrade is. I find just making a note is simpler than digging around the Labs.

I totally agree that it would be nice to just skip the Blitzkrieg upgrade due to the +1 oil consumption and just buy any Armour and Tank Destroyer upgrades, but this is not an option. Probably because such an option would unbalance the game.

Anyway...thanks for the reply, Stauffenberg! This is a great game no matter what petty and inexperienced gripes I might have about it!
