Adding new units & Changing attack range

Post by panzeroberst »

Hello all!

I wanted to change the attack range of the Motorized Corps units to reflect the upgrades in Artillery tech but despite changing all the relevant files, I never got it to work in-game. Out of curiosity, I downloaded the Java GUI Decompiler to look at the .class files in hopes of finding a piece of code that dictates the attack range values of ground units. I was unsuccessful however and I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out.

Secondly, I would like to add some units into the game. Metalogic told me that the game's scale does not really make it conducive to create specialized units like the assault gun but I would love to see a Stug III roll across the Russian plains :D . Can someone give me a detailed guide to add new units?

Thank you so much!

At the game's map scale, it would be pretty unrealistic IMHO to increase the attack range of a ground unit to >1 hex - field artillery could just not fire that far (at least not and still be able to hit the desired target area). If you increased the attack range to 2, then ground units in Calais would be able to attack units in Kent in England, and vice-versa, which doesn't seem right.

The German 15cm heavy field howitzer (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/15_cm_sFH_18 ) had a maximum firing range of 13,250 m. The Russian 122mm gun (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/122_mm_gu ... /37_(A-19) ) had a longer maximum range, of about 20km, but that's still not 2 hexes in CEAW. Also bear in mind that most of the artillery pieces in WW2 had a smaller calibre and shorter range.

You could just change the unit graphics for armour, if you want to see different sprites on the map. I always play with (large) counters, so not really noticed the sprites.

Thanks Metalogic! I fully understand what you mentioned in the previous post. However, as stubbonlrn as I may sound, I would still like to accomplish those things i.e. changing attack range and adding new units.

Is there anyone with the technical expertise to help me out? :)

I suppose a super-heavy siege artillery unit might be plausible, but it should be very slow (max movement 2 hexes, and that negatively affected by non-clear terrain), have a max range of 2, and have very low survivability and ground defence. I would also argue that it's ground attack value be quite low too, but that it has decent shock value.

But, if you want to mod the game for your own fun and do something different, why not! :-)

Artillery is perhaps better modelled in Commander the Great War (also a good game, the AI is better than CEAW too), and there are separate artillery units in that, but the hexes on it's map are smaller and it models munitions supply and production in a less abstract way than CEAW.

Greetings everyone,

I am currently working on custom unit sprites as Metalogic suggested. It is going quite well and I managed to change sprites for the German infantry corps. Since infantry tech upgrades include anti-tank guns and artillery, I added the FlaK 88 and 10.5cm leFH Howitzer. It is quite a labor-intensive job to produce high quality sprites for each zoom level so it is taking a bit of time. If anyone wants the German sprites, I'll gladly post them for download! :D

In reference to the AI for the great war, I reckon you don't need much intelligence to order your men to march directly at machine guns HAR HAR>
