So DEBUGSLIM 1 actually makes the game playable at 800x600 and the units don't even look that bad. Unfortunately, many of the notification backgrounds are removed, making it almost impossible to read battle reports if the terrain behind the report is cluttered. Doesn't seem to be any way to drag the report or move the camera around either before closing the report.
Probably as good as I can expect, though.

Probably. The UI is only designed to work down to 1024x768 so anything less will cause overlaps and usability issues. Battle reports are attached to the screen view, not the in-game camera so they're likly being part rendered off screen. 800x600 will also make the editor near impossible to use.

high end gaming laptop using nvidia card mouse-lags with vsync disabled. Reminds me of the bad old 486 days. Similar spec desktop runs fine. Confusiled.

Re: Very erratic mouse movement
It's a Dell XPS 9550:
15.6in (1920x1080) IPS 16:9 screen.
Nvidia GTX 960M GPU
Intel Core i5-6300HQ 6th-gen 'Skylake' chip.
8GB 2133MHz DDR4 RAM (4GB x2)
256GB SSD
I have used nvidia inspector to ensure vsync is off. Have also tried the windowed trick with no success.
I will refresh the usual culprit drivers and report back in a few days. Edit update: latest nvidia driver, clean install, same settings applied; no change.
It's just the mouse lag in game that appears to be the issue, moving the camera, panning etc seems nice and responsive via the keyboard.
cheers

Re: Very erratic mouse movement
The 950M isn't actually all that fast, especially at 1080p. What shadow quality are you running at? Is AA on?
SHIFT+Q will turn on an FPS display.
Cheers

Re: Very erratic mouse movement
I had everything at max. Now playing at 2xAA and low shadows and that's made a difference. I looked at the processor again and its a 960m but I don't know much about the mobile processor attributes. cheers
