CEAW Gold Announced - oh and the PSP & DS version too!
Slitherine and Koch Media announce MILITARY HISTORY™ Commander – Europe at War for Nintendo DS™, PSP™(PlayStation®Portable) and PC
History specialist Slitherine, a leading UK-based independent developer and publisher, and Koch Media, a leading producer and distributor of digital entertainment products, today announced the release of the new title MILITARY HISTORY™ Commander Europe at War for Nintendo DS™, PSP™ and a PC version with new and enhanced features. This is the first release in a new series of games.
MILITARY HISTORY™ Commander Europe at War is a turn-based strategy game set during World War II. Players take command of either the Axis powers or the Allied forces, and make decisions relating to recruitment, reconnaissance and diplomacy.
MILITARY HISTORY™ Commander Europe at War was designed to be easy to play, without being simple to master. The artificial intelligence offers an exciting challenge, even for experienced gamers. And thanks to the clearly arranged, easy-to-use user interface, players will actually spend their time fighting the enemy, rather than struggling with the menus.
Features
• Turn-based battles of World War II across several European countries
• Huge hex grid campaign map
• Six epic, extensive scenarios, including Operation Barbarossa and D-Day
• 50 inventions from five different tech trees
• Recruitment of historical commanders for the player's own units
• In-game artwork by Osprey Publishing, a leading publisher of military history books
Enhanced PC Features
• Addition of six quick play scenarios for multiplayer. Those cover the same time periods
as the original maps but can be played quicker
• Frame rate has been increased
• Updates to the moddable script file system to be more friendly to windows Vista and XP
• Improved AI reacts quickly to players decisions

One of the big issues here is the copy protection system. With CEAW we used someone elses system and its caused endless probelms and you'll see evidence of that all over the tech support forum.
We decided to replace the copy protections system for CEAW gold with our own that did not limit you to X installs on the same PC so if you hard drive crashed you could reinstall and play the game. Because of the switch over we'd had to use a completely new type of installer and the two versions are more like different games from an installer/copy protection point of view.
We're still trying to work out how we would offer an upgrade as its technically quite difficult. We certainly dont think people should have to buy both full games. The biggest problem is validating people have a copy of the game. Anyone who bought direct from us is fine as we have your details, it's the other people we might have trouble with.
Now we are using our own copy protection system this kind of thing is not really an issue for the future.

That is actually GOOD news Ian. I will openly state I was no fan of the previous installer. I am constantly messing with my computer, and any of us that are of a similar sort likely hated the previous installer.
I got frustrated to the point, that even though I have the real deal straight from your hands, I went and bought a copy of CEAW from Matrix Games just so I could employ their 'serial only' installer instead.
Unfortunately I know TOO much about the value of copy protection from both sides of the fence. Intrusive copy protection and limited installs only serves to irritate customers and in a lot of cases they simply just don't bother to purchase at all. No one can know loses to piracy, but loses to refusal to deal with the copy protection are also a difficult to measure intangible as well. The feelings expressed at places like Matrix Games, Wargamer, Armchair General and Gamesquad are easy to locate. Wargamers despise limited install or restrictive based methods.
Ian, if people want both games, they'll buy both. If they offer a valid serial number, you can offer them a price reduction on a sale of the new product. It worked to get me to go from Gary Grigsby's World at War to Gary Grigsby's World at War a World divided. I was cool getting the I think it was 30% off. Were all big boys in this hobby Ian, don't lose sleep on this, offer a price drop to valid verifiable customers if you can, but don't go nuts trying to merge the two games.
Wargamers have been ok buying slightly revamped wargames like TOAW3, Campaign Series, Close Combat, when all they were getting was prettied up graphics and some tweaks. If the wargaming community wants the new version, they will pay for it. You don't need to worry too long on this.

Together with a friend, I've been looking to buy CEAW and get some PBEM rounds going. Went on Amazon today and saw the Gold edition. Looks dandy, just two questions that I don't see a reply to yet:
a) will it be possible to play multiplayer (PBEM) games where one player uses the Gold edition, and the other uses the original (patched) game?
b) connecting to the previous; will the Gold edition be compatible with existing (patched) Mac version? If the answer to a) is yes, it should be since Freeverse finally released their version of the 1.06 patch which is reportedly compatible with the same version on PC. If, on the other hand, Gold will not even be compatible with the original PC game, I'm assuming this will be a complete no go, unless Freverse release a Mac version of Gold as well, which would probably take a long time at any rate (given it took them a year to make a patch.)
The background to the questions is the bloke I was going to play with is a Mac user. In addition, I'm a Linux user myself and would have to run CEAW under wine, but that's another chapter altogether.

They wont be compatible with Mac initially. The CEAW is currently in 1.07 beta and once CEAW Gold is released they will but be using that but under a new patch name (say we call it a 1.13 version or something). So, Mac version is using 1.06 means you cannot be sure they will update again. You would have to ask Freeverse if they are planning any further updates to Mac.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I think there's a word missing or so making the sentence a little hard to understand, but if I get you correctly:
-Gold will be compatible with original CEAW version 1.07, or whatever it may be called under a new name.
-The Mac version will only be compatible with Gold and CEAW original version 1.07 (or whatever name) if they port that patch as well.
Correct?
