Soviet infantry moving across rivers?

Soviet infantry moving across rivers?
I have a question, I'm in my second playthrough and decided to take on the Soviets instead of being a whimp and play in the sands of Africa. Now, I've noticed in a few scenarios that the soviet infanry -including cav- is able to cross minor rivers. No bridge, no bridging unit, no town or anything, they just cross it and it takes them only 1 movement point.
So they basically just ignore the fact that there is a minor river on the hex. Anyone had this happen?
It messes me up sometimes because It shouldn't be possible and I place my units accordingly.
Cheers in advance.

I may have also noticed this behavior with other AI controlled infantry. Will need to investigate further.

I have noticed it once before and was curious about it as well. Was going to try and replicate it but have not done so yet. It was a soviet regular infantry for me.
Re: Soviet infantry moving across rivers?
Having artillery in a truck in visual range is a sure way to lure them across. I first thought it might be that the rivers are treated as 'frozen' after I put in 'setany ground_state Dry' but it just happened again in Kharkov 42, (in may) and I didn't tweak weather or ground state.
No idea.
No idea.
Re: Soviet infantry moving across rivers?
I'm being told it could be an issue related to the AI recently being granted the knowledge to be able to use the Force March ability. So they're definitely on the case.

Good to know, cheers!

I also noticed French infantry moving across the river in Dunkirk. Also coming after my German artillery.

Yep just had a Russian cav hop the river and take a supply hex he should have had no ability to reach and my units could not pursue him because of the river. While annoying at least they know about it and are on it.
Re: Soviet infantry moving across rivers?
correct, after Patch 3 I've noticed the same, thought I'm wrong. Glad I'm not....
I was in endgame szenario Berlin, I was very suprised the soviet came across the river wich was not defended by me.
For me its definitely a bug.

Pretty sure I saw something similar in Tunisia yesterday.

French infantry also has swimmers (Dunkirk):

Re: Soviet infantry moving across rivers?
The example above of Dunkirk should be easy to replicate.

Aargh it just happened in this Random generated game, the AI German Infantry unit waltzed across the minor river as if he was walking on water-

As long as his 'Faith' was strong and resolute... he could very well have "walked on water!"... I'm not really surprised!.PoorOldSpike wrote: ↑Sun May 10, 2020 3:06 am Aargh it just happened in this Random generated game, the German Infantry unit waltzed across the minor river as if he was walking on water-
History: When the 'Apostle Paul' saw 'Jesus' walking in the stormy weather with the tall waves bobbing about in the water in the 'Sea of Galilee... he was empowered by his overwhelming confidence by what 'Jesus' was able to do that he thought that he could do the same himself. In his great energetic enthusiasm he jumped out of the boat and then for a very short time... was also walking on the water as well. Reality then struck him hard!... as he finally comprehended the grave danger that the heavy storm and tall waves were to him... this situation was anything but safe!... so then... his enthusiasm and faith faded very quickly... and as a result... he began to sink into the water.
Re: Soviet infantry moving across rivers?
Yeah the soviet soldiers infused with Jesus DNA gave me a bit of a fright today in Stalingrad, gave poor old Karl Gerat a bit of a kicking when he thought he was safe. Reorganised the line with infantry along the river and the poor soviet sods ripped themselves to shreds because of the river penalty. To shreds I say. Would have felt a bit cheesy but serves the cheating sods right.

Re: Soviet infantry moving across rivers?
At least in real life rivers have fords, and infantry have rubber boats, so I suppose we'll have to get used to the AI catching us by surprise by sneaking across unless the devs fix it..

Re: Soviet infantry moving across rivers?
This happens when infantry unit stands next to a river and activates "forced march". So, it's not only AI which can do it, you can do it too.
This can be fixed, but perhaps the players will prefer the current behavior?

Re: Soviet infantry moving across rivers?
Let's vote..

I vote to let forced marchers cross minor rivers because-
1- Units historically forded rivers.
2- The game will become more fluid and mobile.
I've just run some tests (screenshot below) that confirm units with the forced march trait can ford minor rivers.(Is "trait" the right word?)
(They don't lose their transport after fording.
They stop their movement when they reach the far bank and can't move further that turn)-

And if anybody's wondering if units with the trait can ford Major rivers, no they can't, they'll look for the nearest bridge like this unit has done--

PS- and if you want to know if an enemy unit has got the trait, just click on him like this Russian Regular unit-

Re: Soviet infantry moving across rivers?
So the AI uses "forced march" intelligently to cross minor rivers? That is so cool! I will have to keep a lookout for that-- and use it more myself!
